Bariatric Surgical Alterations in Tolerability, Enjoyment and Cravings in the Diet (BSATED) instrument: A new scale to measure food preferences following bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery is associated with changing food preferences, but it is not known whether these changes differ by type of operation or are associated with weight loss. The current study presents validation results for a new 27-item scale, Bariatric Surgical Alterations in Tolerability, Enjoyment and Cravings in the Diet (BSATED). This scale measured enjoyment, craving, and intolerance changes for nine food and beverage categories common to dietary habits in the Southern California region of the U.S. one year following bariatric surgery in the Bariatric Experience Long Term (BELONG) study. Application of the quality control circle model to reduce non-conforming surgical instrument packaging and hospital-acquired infection risk: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), particularly postoperative infections, remain a major global concern, and deficiencies in surgical instrument packaging represent an important and preventable risk factor. The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) plays a critical role in maintaining sterile assurance; however, process-related packaging non-conformance can compromise patient safety. This pilot study aimed to apply the Quality Control Circle (QCC) model to reduce non-conforming surgical instrument packaging and strengthen infection prevention capability in a tertiary hospi

Automated surgical skill assessment in endoscopic pituitary surgery using real-time instrument tracking on a high-fidelity bench-top phantom.

Improved surgical skill is generally associated with improved patient outcomes, although assessment is subjective, labour intensive, and requires domain-specific expertise. Automated data-driven metrics can alleviate these difficulties, as demonstrated by existing machine learning instrument tracking models. However, these models are tested on limited datasets of laparoscopic surgery, with a focus on isolated tasks and robotic surgery. Here, a new public dataset is introduced: the nasal phase of simulated endoscopic pituitary surgery. Simulated surgery allows for a realistic yet repeatable env

High-grade adult isthmic L5-s1 spondylolisthesis: a report of intraoperative slip progression treated with surgical reduction and posterior instrumented fusion.

Adult isthmic spondylolisthesis most commonly occurs at the L5-S1 level of the lumbar spine. Slip progression is relatively rare in adults with this condition and slippage is typically associated with advanced degeneration of the disk below the pars defect. When symptomatic, radiculopathy is the typical complaint in adults with isthmic spondylolisthesis. When considering options for surgical treatment of adult isthmic spondylolisthesis, the surgeon must consider several different options, such as decompression, fusion, instrumentation, reduction, and type of bone graft to be used. All of these
