Left parietal tACS at alpha frequency induces a shift of visuospatial attention.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary shifts of visuospatial attention are associated with a lateralization of parieto-occipital alpha power (7-13Hz), i.e. higher power in the hemisphere ipsilateral and lower power contralateral to the locus of attention. Recent noninvasive neuromodulation studies demonstrated that alpha power can be experimentally increased using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that tACS at alpha frequency over the left parietal cortex induces shifts of attention to the left hemifield. However, spatial attention shifts not only occu

Differences in day and night shift clinical performance in anesthesiology.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether anesthesia residents (physicians in training) performed clinical duties in the operating room differently during the day versus at night. BACKGROUND: Fatigue from sleep deprivation and working through the night is common for physicians, particularly during residency training. METHODS: Using a repeated-measures design, we studied 13 pairs of day-night matched anesthesia cases. Dependent measures included task times, workload ratings, response to an alarm light latency task, and mood. RESULTS: Residents spent significantly less time on manual tasks and m

Transient Reduction of Frontal Midline Theta Activity During Attentional Shifts in Healthy Young Adults.

The prefrontal cortex, well-developed in humans, plays a crucial role in various behavioural outcomes. Neuronal resources are limited, however, and must be appropriately allocated. A specific type of theta activity, known as frontal midline theta (Fmθ), is intermittently observed in the frontal midline region during intense concentration to tasks. Meanwhile, the power of Fmθ activity is stronger in individuals with excessive concentration than in those who are not engaged in such state. Fmθ activity in healthy young adults is therefore speculated to be reduced when shifting attention from one

Cognitive tasks show age-related decline over a 10-year period in a natural aging monkey model, cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus).

Cotton-top tamarins (n = 14, aged 7-24 years) were tested over a 10-year period on tasks conventionally differentiating aging from dementia in humans. Three tasks were developed on iPads to collect response accuracies in tests of attention (visual search [VS]), working memory (delayed matching-to-sample), and executive processing (rule-shifting). A fourth task utilized a spontaneous object recognition paradigm to test familiarity memory in the subjects' home cages. Linear regression analyses revealed cognitive decline with increasing age in particular components of these tasks. Specifically, a

Reduced Plasma Orexin-A Concentrations are Associated with Cognitive Deficits in Anorexia Nervosa.

Orexins/hypocretins are neuropeptides implicated in numerous processes, including food intake and cognition. The role of these peptides in the psychopathology of anorexia nervosa (AN) remains poorly understood. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the associations between plasma orexin-A (OXA) concentrations and neuropsychological functioning in adult women with AN, and a matched control group. Fasting plasma OXA concentrations were taken in 51 females with AN and in 51 matched healthy controls. Set-shifting was assessed using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), whereas decision ma

Patients with early Parkinson's disease are not impaired on spatial orientating of attention.

The shifting of attention to visual stimuli was studied in twenty patients with early Parkinson's disease (stage I or II as defined by the Hoehn and Yahr scale) and twenty normal controls matched for age, sex and intellectual status. Both groups were screened to exclude dementia, psychiatric disease and other neurological abnormalities. The speed of shifting attention to visual stimuli was measured using the cost and benefit paradigm. The results showed an overall increase in response latencies in patients with early Parkinson's disease compared to the Control group, but without a concomitant

Examining Smartphone-assessed Executive Function Metrics and Intrinsic Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Depression.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common and costly mental health condition that is often associated with deficits in executive function. Smartphone applications ("apps") have emerged as promising methods for assessing mental health-related outcomes in individuals' daily lives that can detect changes that unfold over time. Although smartphone apps have been used to evaluate executive functioning in individuals with neurological conditions and in other mental health disorders, few studies have examined this in MDD. The present study tested whether smartphone-assessed executive function is (1

Feasibility and testing outcomes of task-shared implementation of advanced HIV disease point of care tests in Beira (Mozambique) and Kinshasa (DRC).

INTRODUCTION: Mortality from advanced HIV disease (AHD) remains high and current strategies to promptly test people eligible for AHD screening, are insufficient. Task sharing for point of care (POC) testing utilizing lay health workers (LHW) is recommended, however it is marginally practised in many countries. This study sought to describe the feasibility and testing outcomes of task-shared implementation of the AHD POC diagnostic tests utilizing LHW and professional health care workers (HCW). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional mixed-methods implementation study in seven primary and three se

An fMRI Pilot Study of Cognitive Flexibility in Trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is a relatively common psychiatric condition, although its neurobiological basis is unknown. Abnormalities of flexible responding have been implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder and thus may be relevant in trichotillomania. The purpose of this study was to probe reversal learning and attentional set-shifting in trichotillomania. Twelve adults with trichotillomania and 13 matched healthy control subjects undertook a functional MRI task of cognitive flexibility. Group-level activation maps for extradimensional and reversal switches were independently

Functional Similarity of Medial Superior Parietal Areas for Shift-Selective Attention Signals in Humans and Monkeys.

We continually shift our attention between items in the visual environment. These attention shifts are usually based on task relevance (top-down) or the saliency of a sudden, unexpected stimulus (bottom-up), and are typically followed by goal-directed actions. It could be argued that any species that can covertly shift its focus of attention will rely on similar, evolutionarily conserved neural substrates for processing such shift-signals. To address this possibility, we performed comparative fMRI experiments in humans and monkeys, combining traditional, and novel, data-driven analytical appro

Effects of cognitive dual-tasking on biomechanics and muscle activity during gait initiation and sit-to-walk in young adults.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cognitive dual-tasking on gait initiation and sit-to-walk. Twenty-eight healthy young adults performed gait initiation and sit-to-walk under two conditions: while engaging in serial subtraction (dual-task) and without any additional task (single-task). Motion data were collected using a 10-camera optoelectronic motion capture system, synchronized with force plates and surface electromyography. We analyzed spatiotemporal parameters, center of mass displacement, center of pressure trajectory, and lower limb muscle activation patterns. W

Gaze Tracking of Pitched Balls in Coupled and Uncoupled Tasks.

Studies suggest that anticipation in sports-related tasks is better if the task maintains the coupling of perception and action required in competition. Study 1 addressed the question of whether gaze tracking varies between coupled tasks in baseball and softball batters. Fifteen subjects executed either a coupled task (partially swinging a bat at an approaching ball) or an uncoupled task (predicting the passing height of an approaching ball). The ball was stopped by a net 8 feet (2.44 m) in front of the subject. Rapid gaze shifts occurred for 53.0% of the pitches in the uncoupled task, and for

The rat retrosplenial cortex as a link for frontal functions: A lesion analysis.

Cohorts of rats with excitotoxic retrosplenial cortex lesions were tested on four behavioural tasks sensitive to dysfunctions in prelimbic cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, or both. In this way the study tested whether retrosplenial cortex has nonspatial functions that reflect its anatomical interactions with these frontal cortical areas. In Experiment 1, retrosplenial cortex lesions had no apparent effect on a set-shifting digging task that taxed intradimensional and extradimensional attention, as well as reversal learning. Likewise, retrosplenial cortex lesions did not impair a strategy shi

Perseveration and Shifting in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder as a Function of Uncertainty, Punishment, and Serotonergic Medication.

BACKGROUND: The nature of cognitive flexibility deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which historically have been tested with probabilistic reversal learning tasks, remains elusive. Here, a novel deterministic reversal task and inclusion of unmedicated patients in the study sample illuminated the role of fixed versus uncertain rules/contingencies and of serotonergic medication. Additionally, our understanding of probabilistic reversal was enhanced through theoretical computational modeling of cognitive flexibility in OCD. METHODS: We recruited 49 patients with OCD, 21 of whom were

Corticospinal Control of a Challenging Ankle Task in Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

After incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), the control of lower extremity movements may be affected by impairments in descending corticospinal tract function. Previous iSCI studies demonstrated relatively well-preserved movement control during simple alternating dorsiflections and plantar flexions albeit with severely reduced motor strength and range of motion. This task, however, required comparably limited fine motor control, impeding the sensitivity to assess the modulatory capacity of corticospinal control. Therefore, we introduced a more challenging ankle motor task necessitating complex

Disturbance of information in superior parietal lobe during dual-task interference in a simulated driving task.

Performing a secondary task while driving causes a decline in driving performance. This phenomenon, called dual-task interference, can have lethal consequences. Previous fMRI studies have looked at the changes in the average brain activity to uncover the neural correlates of dual-task interference. From these results, it is unclear whether the overall modulations in brain activity result from general effects such as task difficulty, attentional modulations, and mental effort or whether it is caused by a change in the responses specific to each condition due to dual-task interference. To overco

Flexible connectivity in the aging brain revealed by task modulations.

Recent studies have shown that aging has a large impact on connectivity within and between functional networks. An open question is whether elderly still have the flexibility to adapt functional network connectivity (FNC) to the demands of the task at hand. To study this, we collected fMRI data in younger and older participants during resting state, a selective attention (SA) task and an n-back working memory task with varying levels of difficulty. Spatial independent component (IC) analysis was used to identify functional networks over all participants and all conditions. Dual regression was

How Uncertainty Affects Children's Exploration and Exploitation in Statistical Learning.

Environmental input is inherently uncertain at both global and local levels. Depending on the level of uncertainty, cognitive systems dynamically adapt by shifting attention between exploiting learned regularities and exploring less predictable alternatives. While these dynamics are well documented in adults, how local and global uncertainty jointly influences children's exploration-exploitation strategies during statistical learning remains unclear. Combining eye-tracking with a probabilistic cueing task, this study quantified local and global uncertainty on a trial-by-trial basis to examine
