The hypertrophied temporalis and masseter muscles give a muscular shaped and bulky contour to the face. Botulinum neurotoxin injection methods are commonly used for facial contouring; however, adverse effects have been reported owing to a lack of delicate anatomical information. The anatomical considerations when injecting botulinum neurotoxin into the temporalis and masseter muscles were reviewed in the present study. Current knowledge on the localization of the botulinum neurotoxin injection point with more recent anatomical dissection and modified Sihler staining procedures was assessed. Th

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to clarify the presence or absence of fronto-temporal branches (FTB) of the facial nerve within the interfascial (between the superficial and deep leaflet of the temporalis fascia) fat pad.
METHODS: Eight formalin-fixed cadaveric heads (16 sides) were used in the study. The course of the facial nerve and the FTB was dissected in its individual tissue planes and followed from the stylomastoid foramen to the frontal region.
RESULTS: In the fronto-temporal region, above the zygomatic arch, FTB gives several small twigs running anteriorly in the fat pad above

Electromyographic (EMG) activity in the muscles moving the jaw, hyoid and tongue of the cat was recorded during the intake of solid and liquid foods; the nature of the movements of the jaw, hyoid, tongue and food were recorded and identified cineradiographically. Synergy was evident in muscles with similar anatomical orientation. However, most muscles were activated more than once during each jaw cycle and some of these additional periods of activation occurred at times not predicted by the anatomical arrangement of the muscles. The pattern of EMG activity was the same during all lapping cycle

Simultaneous dual system rehabilitation of facial paralysis involves using two independent reanimation techniques to optimize facial movement in both a quantitative and qualitative manner. These techniques involve the use of nerve grafting or crossover procedures combined with a dynamic muscle transfer. A group of 37 patients who underwent five different combinations of reanimation was analyzed. The techniques were evaluated using a standard rating scheme for judging success of reanimation procedures. The combination of a masseter muscle transfer to the lower region of the face and a cable gra

This study assesses the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (830 nm) for myalgia treatment of masticatory muscles. Sixty patients with muscular myalgia were selected and randomly allocated into 2 groups (n=30): Group A comprised patients given a placebo (control), and Group B consisted of those undergoing photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). PBMT and placebo were applied bilaterally to specific points on the masseter and temporal muscles. Referred pain elicited by palpation and maximum mouth opening were measured before (EV1) and after (EV2) the treatments. The data were analyzed using statis

BACKGROUND: A variety of revascularization techniques have been reported for the management of moyamoya disease to prevent risks of stroke. STA (superficial temporal artery)-MCA (middle cerebral artery) microanastomosis, single or double bypass, with temporal muscle or galeal onlay graft has been the standard operative procedure.
METHOD: Our rationale of revascularization surgery has been a combination of STA-MCA double bypass using the frontal and the parietal branches of STA and transfer of a highly vascularized thick galeal flap with maintained STA vasculature.
CONCLUSION: This STA-enhanc

Mastication is one of the most important functions of the stomatognathic system and it can be performed either on the left side or right side. However, some people have each habitual chewing side, so imbalance of stomatognathic function between left and right is observed. This imbalance is supposed to reflect the relationship between the left and right elements of the stomatognathic system. Therefore, the analysis of this imbalance is very useful for assessing the stomatognathic system. The purpose of this study was to reveal the relationship between imbalance of stomatognathic function betwee

Pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery must be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses of the lateral forehead and temporal fossa. While the first reported case of a temporal artery aneurysm was reported by Thomas Bartholin in 1740, there is scant mention of this lesion in the plastic and maxillofacial surgical literature. Pseudoaneurysms can arise in the forehead and scalp as a result of blunt traumatic impingement of the superficial temporal artery against the calvarium. The anterior branch of the artery is most vulnerable, because in the lateral forehead it courses ove

Isolated bilateral temporalis muscle hypertrophy (IBTMH) is a rare clinical condition characterized by symmetrical enlargement of the temporalis muscles without masseter involvement. This case report presents a 47-year-old male with progressive bilateral temporal swelling and discomfort during mastication, significantly affecting his quality of life. Clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed homogenous enlargement of the temporalis muscles with no underlying pathology. The patient was treated with botulinum toxin type A (BTxA) injections in two sessions, following ana

The temporal bones of a man with poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma, who had had a bilateral conductive hearing loss and incomplete left-sided facial palsy, were obtained. Sections were prepared for histologic study by staining with hematoxylin and eosin and were examined under the light microscope. The left temporal bone showed marked tumor cell involvement, not only of the lateral part of the cartilaginous portion of the eustachian tube (ET) where the tensor veli palatini muscle had been partially destroyed, but also in the anterior part of the temporal bone. A serous middle ear effu

Pain-pressure thresholds of the head and neck region of 31 female patients (aged 13 to 50 years; mean, 28.4 +/- 9.6 years) suffering from episodic tension-type headache and 32 female control subjects (aged 15 to 46 years; mean, 26.6 +/- 8.6 years) were recorded with an electronic algometer by the same blinded observer. The multivariate analysis of variance revealed that the algometer values obtained from different age groups of patients and control subjects were statistically different, but the values for the right-side muscles were not statistically different from the corresponding values for

Luc's abscess is a rare but important complication of acute otitis media (AOM), whereby infection spreads from the middle ear, resulting in a subperiosteal collection beneath the temporal muscle. Unlike other extracranial abscesses relating to AOM, Luc's abscess is not believed to involve the mastoid bone. We present the case of a patient with a Luc's abscess with mastoid involvement and discuss its successful management. We believe that patients presenting with a subperiosteal collection beneath the temporal muscle and mastoiditis may represent a different group of patients to those described

A 47-year-old man presented with complaints of progressive diplopia in downgaze and a painful firm mass on the left medial superior canthus. On examination, there was marked hyperemia of the superior bulbar conjunctiva of the left eye. Systemic examination revealed erythematous papules on his trunk and pulmonary infiltrates. CT of the orbits revealed a fusiform enlargement of the left superior oblique muscle and diffuse infiltration of the left temporal region. Biopsy of the left superior oblique muscle and temporal muscle disclosed Congo red deposits that show apple-green birefringence under

A method for cerebral revascularization using latissimus dorsi muscle free flap transfer is described. Latissimus dorsi muscle is harvested with thoracodorsal vessels after completion of craniotomy and exposure of superficial temporal vessels. The size of muscle belly which is harvested is dependent on the area where the revascularization is necessary. Microvascular anastomoses of superficial temporal vessels and thoracodorsal vessels are performed in end-to-end fashion. A 31-year-old male patient with moyamoya syndrome was treated by this method. Postoperative angiography demonstrated success

The third part of this literature review on the clinical relevance of surface electromyography (EMG) of the masticatory muscles summarizes the results of clinical studies in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD), preferably randomized controlled trials, examining the impact of changes to the dynamic occlusion. Clenching in left and right laterotrusive positions results in decrease in EMG activity of masseter and temporalis muscles on both working and non-working side. Masseter muscle exhibits largely uniform bilateral activity in laterotrusive positions, independent of canine guidanc
