INTRODUCTION: Acute capsular injuries of the elbow joint and its ligaments predominantly occur after joint dislocation or subluxation. Together with lateral and medial epicondylitis they represent a common injury pattern in radiology, orthopedic and trauma surgery.
CLINICAL ISSUE: Because of the complexity of the elbow joint, knowledge of the elbow dislocation and injury pattern as well as the anatomy is essential in order to adequately estimate the injury severity and joint stability. This is crucial for the correct diagnosis and choice of treatment. Systematic physical examination and caref

The present study investigated the clinical outcomes of the posterior midline approach in the treatment of 34 patients with significantly calcified insertional Achilles tendinopathy. The posterior midline approach was applied for the surgical treatment of 34 patients with chronic significantly calcified insertional Achilles tendinopathy after failed conservative treatment. Gastrocnemius recession was performed simultaneously for patients with gastrocnemius contracture. The Fowler-Philip angle and parallel pitch lines were measured before surgery, and the visual analog scale, Tegner score, and

Orthotic devices such as foot orthoses, splints, taping and bracing are recommended for Achilles tendinopathy (AT). This systematic review was conducted to review the current evidence for the effectiveness of orthotic devices for the treatment of mid-portion or insertional AT. Electronic bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Current Contents, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus) were searched in May 2014. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated using the Quality Index. Where possible, effects were determined using standardised mean differences. The strength of evidence for each int

BACKGROUND: The role of inflammation in tendinopathy has historically been a subject of significant controversy. Our primary aim was to determine whether inflammatory cell numbers were increased in painful human tendinopathy versus healthy control tendons. Our secondary aim was to assess whether the inflammatory cells had been linked with symptoms or disease stage.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature using the PRISMA and Cochrane guidelines of the Medline database using specific search criteria. Only studies measuring inflammatory cells using specific marker

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a popular option for the treatment of injured tendons. However, the efficacy of PRP treatment is a matter of heated debate in orthopaedics and sports medicine. In this study, we used a cell culture model to evaluate the potential effects of PRP treatment on degenerative tendinopathy. The in vitro model, which uses the current concept of "diseases-in-a-dish", consisted of tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSCs) that were derived from rabbit tendons and cultured in differentiating media with and without autologous platelet-rich clot releasate (PRCR). We found th

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Supraspinatus tendinopathy is a common cause of shoulder pain seen in overhead athletes, but there appear to be no published cases that present Lyme disease as the underlying cause of tendinopathy. Lyme disease is diagnosed primarily by clinical signs and symptoms and then supported by laboratory tests, including enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) and Western blot testing. This case demonstrates the importance of a physical therapist's input and clinical role in reaching the correct diagnosis in an athlete with Lyme disease who had a diagnosis of rotator cuff imp

Patellar-tendinopathy (PT) is a common overuse injury in long distance runners, especially in women. Until today, no definite combinations of clinical, biomechanical, or training variables, or causative factors in the development of PT have been found. This study focused on assessing the differences in biomechanical characteristics between healthy runners (CO) and runners with PT only. We examined a total of 42 women. 21 CO and 21 PT. 3D kinematics of barefoot running was used in the biomechanical setup. Both groups were matched with respect to height and weight. After determining dropouts due

Extensor tendinopathy is a degenerative overuse condition involving the common extensor tendon at the lateral humeral epicondyle. The diagnosis and management of this condition are clinically based. Our aims were to determine if through patient history and clinical examination we could ascertain prognostic factors affecting time to symptom resolution in extensor tendinopathy. Symptomatic patients (N=28) had a thorough history and examination, and rehabilitation monitored regularly for 6 months. Patient outcomes at 6 months were then correlated with specific factors on initial presentation. Fac

PURPOSE: Suspension arthroplasty using the abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendon is widely performed for advanced trapeziometacarpal (TMC) arthritis. The hammock method involves wrapping the APL tendon around the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon for suspension. Although outcomes are generally favorable, FCR tendon-related complications-such as tendinitis and rupture-have been reported, though detailed analyses remain limited.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 21 hands in 21 patients who underwent the hammock procedure for primary TMC arthritis were evaluated, with a follow-up of more th

Calcific tendinopathy typically affects the shoulder rotator cuff tendons. Its management includes shock wave therapy and US-guided percutaneous irrigation, with surgery being less and less used. Extra-shoulder calcific tendinopathy is relatively infrequent and typically affects the hip. While the diagnostic techniques and the treatment options for shoulder calcific tendinopathy have been extensively described, there are only anecdotic reports on the other sites. In this paper, we have reported an unusual case of non-insertional Achilles calcific tendinopathy which occurred many years after Ac

Tendinopathy is a common disease that affects athletes, causing pain and dysfunction to the afflicted tendon. A clinical diagnose is usually combined with imaging and, among all the existing techniques, ultrasound is widely adopted. The aim of this review is to sum up the existing evidence on ultrasound as an imaging tool and guide for treatments in lower limbs tendinopathy. Using three different databases-PubMed, MEDLINE and CENTRAL-a literature search has been performed in May 2020 combining MeSH terms and free terms with Boolean operators. Authors independently selected studies, conducted q

BACKGROUND: Achilles non-insertional tendinopathy is usually treated with conservative means. If resistant to a rehabilitation protocol surgical treatment could be proposed. The aim of this research is to report the mid-term clinical results of endoscopic assisted surgery for patients suffering from recalcitrant painful non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy.
METHODS: A consecutive series of 11 patients (6 men and 5 women), median age of 54 (range 40-67) years, with chronic recalcitrant painful non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy were included. All patients completed at least 20 physical the

De Quervain's disease, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and trigger finger (digit) are three common pathological conditions of the hand. They are considered overuse syndromes and occur predominantly in females. The prevalence rate and cause-specific risks of these three tendinopathies have not yet been clarified. Data from 41,871 cases listed in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from 2010 to 2014 were analyzed. The prevalence rate of these 3 conditions by age, sex, and the risk factors of female-dominant diseases (e.g., osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis [RA], and ten

Achilles tendinopathy is one of the most frequently ankle and foot overuse injuries, which is a clinical syndrome characterized by the combination of pain, swelling, and impaired performance. The two main categories of Achilles tendinopathy are classified according to anatomical location and broadly include insertional and noninsertional tendinopathy. The etiology of Achilles tendinopathy is multifactorial including both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Failed healing response and degenerative changes were found in the tendon. The failed healing response includes three different and continuous
