Central tendency biases in temporal memory: extending Vierordt's law to sequential order and distance judgments under emotional contexts.

Vierordt's law is a well-established phenomenon in time perception research, describing systematic biases where long durations tend to be underestimated while short durations tend to be overestimated. The present study investigated whether these central tendency biases extend to temporal memory and examined how emotional context influences such estimation biases. Through three experiments employing pictorial and textual stimuli, we assessed the accuracy of temporal distance and position memories. Consistent with Vierordt's law, we found robust regression-toward-the-mean biases across all exper

BIVIP: a competitive neural network for bilateral visuo-haptic processing.

Visuo-haptic interactions are gaining interest in perception research because of their relevance to robotics and rehabilitation. While the benefits of integrating concurrent visuo-tactile cues are well-documented, the temporal dynamics of competitive interactions between vision and touch remain less understood. Building on extant empirical evidence of unilateral intersensory switching, we ask whether bilateral detection of visual and tactile stimuli can be explained by cross-sensory competition and explore the underlying sensorineural dynamics via a multi-level neural network model. Spatial boundaries affect subjective time and order memory: the combined roles of contextual instability and unpredictability.

People form structured memories from continuous experiences through event segmentation, a process often triggered by contextual changes that demarcate the boundaries between events. Event boundaries have been linked with changes in subjective time perception and memory. To expand this finding to spatial navigation, we explored the effects of spatial boundaries on time perception and memory using a virtual "doorway effect". Participants were asked to find and pick up objects in three virtual environments: confined (only one room), duplicated (multiple identical rooms), and novel (multiple uniqu

The farther, the earlier: perceived depth biases temporal order judgments.

Temporal order perception is essential for understanding the succession of events, and is suggested to be affected by attention or metaphorical space-time mapping. Attention theories predict that near or large objects capture attention and enter into consciousness earlier, while the metaphor hypothesis links the concepts of 'far' and 'past' in many languages, predicting that far objects is perceived as appearing earlier. This study investigated temporal order perception in three-dimensional (3D) space to clarify its underlying mechanism. Across three experiments, participants performed a tempo

Where is the moving object now? Judgments of instantaneous position show poor temporal precision (SD = 70 ms).

Humans can precisely judge relative location between two objects moving with the same speed and direction, as numerous studies have shown. However, the precision for localizing a single moving object relative to stationary references remains a neglected topic. Here, subjects reported the perceived location of a moving object at the time of a cue. The variability of the reported positions increased steeply with the speed of the object, such that the distribution of responses corresponds to the distance that the object traveled in 70 ms. This surprisingly large temporal imprecision depends littl

Age-related improvements in auditory temporal resolution in reading-impaired children.

Individuals with developmental dyslexia show impairments in processing that require precise timing of sensory events. Here, we show that in a test of auditory temporal acuity (a gap-detection task) children ages 6-9 years with dyslexia exhibited a significant deficit relative to age-matched controls. In contrast, this deficit was not observed in groups of older reading-impaired individuals (ages 10-11 years; 12-13 years) or in adults (ages 23-25 years). It appears, therefore, that early temporal resolution deficits in those with reading impairments may significantly ameliorate over time. Howev

The effect of reduced viewing time on colour vision in normal subjects and those with abnormal ocular conditions.

The effect of restricting viewing time to 3.75 ms in normal subjects is to produce a tritan-like colour response on the City University colour vision test. This response pattern is consistent and is repeatable for standard illuminant C at 600 lx. Supplementary tests suggest that the effect is due to a defect of the blue/yellow opponent system rather than a true tritan defect. The same test when repeated on subjects with amblyopia or retinal pathology provides different results which may aid in the differential diagnosis of some visual disorders.

Perceptual accuracy as a variable in marital adjustment.

This study investigated the ability of maritally-adjusted couples, couples attaining a divorce, and couples in counseling to predict the rewarding effects of their behavior on their spouse. Twenty-six couples, five obtaining a divorce, nine in counseling, and twelve adjusted couples completed a Marital Interaction Questionnaire in which they rated how rewarding each of the behaviors depicted was to them. Then each member predicted how rewarding it was to their spouse. Behaviors depicting six areas of marital interaction were included in the questionnaire. The computed perceptual accuracy score

Perisaccadic perception of flashing stimulus: Spatial and temporal aspects.

When the eye moves through a constantly flashing light, we can observe the so-called phantom array-a line of light dashes. Our approach involves varying the flashing frequency of the light stimulus, aiming to find how the spatial and temporal characteristics of the phantom array depend on the frequency of light. The observers performed a 40° saccade across a flashing light and had to indicate the beginning and end of the phantom array, the length of a single dash, and the number of dashes they perceived. The trials of different flashing frequencies were varied randomly from 50 Hz to 3.5 kHz. W

Eyes that bind us: Gaze leading induces an implicit sense of agency.

Humans feel a sense of agency over the effects their motor system causes. This is the case for manual actions such as pushing buttons, kicking footballs, and all acts that affect the physical environment. We ask whether initiating joint attention - causing another person to follow our eye movement - can elicit an implicit sense of agency over this congruent gaze response. Eye movements themselves cannot directly affect the physical environment, but joint attention is an example of how eye movements can indirectly cause social outcomes. Here we show that leading the gaze of an on-screen face in

Linking melodic expectation to expressive performance timing and perceived musical tension.

This research explored the relations between the predictability of musical structure, expressive timing in performance, and listeners' perceived musical tension. Studies analyzing the influence of expressive timing on listeners' affective responses have been constrained by the fact that, in most pieces, the notated durations limit performers' interpretive freedom. To circumvent this issue, we focused on the unmeasured prelude, a semi-improvisatory genre without notated durations. In Experiment 1, 12 professional harpsichordists recorded an unmeasured prelude on a harpsichord equipped with a MI

Selecting and tracking multiple objects.

When interacting with the world, people can dynamically split attention across multiple objects in the environment, both when the objects are stationary and when the objects are moving. This type of visual processing is commonly studied in lab settings using either static selection tasks or moving tracking tasks. We describe performance limits that are common to both tasks, including limits on capacity, crowding, visual hemifield arrangement, and speed. Because these shared limits on performance suggest common underlying mechanisms, we examine a set of models that might account for limits acro

Induced self-motion in central vision.

Previous research on visually induced self-motion found that stimulation of the central visual field (up to 30 degrees in diameter) results in perceived object motion while self-motion requires peripheral stimulation. In the present study, perceived self-motion was induced with a radially expanding pattern simulating observer motion through a space filled with dots, with visual angles of 7.5 degrees, 10.6 degrees, 15 degrees, and 21.2 degrees. Speed and texture density were also varied. The duration of reported self-motion (a) decreased with increased speed, (b) failed to increase with increas

Evaluation of Papacarie®, Carie-Care™, BRIX3000™ and conventional hand instrumentation for caries removal in primary teeth: a randomized control study.

In the current odontological era, carious lesions are removed while tooth tissue is preserved. Most of these ideals are met by chemomechanical caries removal (CMCR) methods, which are easy and comfortable to use, differentiate and eliminate infected tissues, minimize pressure, vibration and heat, and are cost-effective. This study examines the efficacy of commercially available CMCR agents, namely Papacarie®, Carie-Care™ and BRIX3000™, and a conventional hand instrumentation method for caries removal in deciduous molars in terms of time consumption, ease of application, and pain perception. Temporal Information Processing in the Cerebellum and Basal Ganglia.

Temporal information processing in the range of a few hundred milliseconds to seconds involves the cerebellum and basal ganglia. In this chapter, we present recent studies on nonhuman primates. In the studies presented in the first half of the chapter, monkeys were trained to make eye movements when a certain amount of time had elapsed since the onset of the visual cue (time production task). The animals had to report time lapses ranging from several hundred milliseconds to a few seconds based on the color of the fixation point. In this task, the saccade latency varied with the time length to

Mental time travel for self and others in individuals with a high level of schizotypy.

Mental time travel (MTT) is the ability to project oneself to the past or future through mental simulation. Moreover, MTT can involve self-related or other-related information. This study aimed to compare MTT in individuals with high levels of schizotypy and that in their counterparts with low levels of schizotypy. Participants with high (n = 37) and low (n = 37) levels of schizotypy completed an MTT task with four conditions [2 (Condition: self vs. other) × 2 (Time orientation: past vs. future)]. They were required to recall past events that had happened to themselves or to a non-intimate per

An experimental paradigm for studying sense of agency in joint human-machine motor actions.

In this paper, we propose an experimental technique for studying the sense of agency (SoA) in joint human-machine actions. This technique is based on the use of an electromechanical finger-lifting device that enables a joint motor action initiated by a participant and completed by the machine. The joint action, later referred to as an "active-passive" action, was implemented as a reaction time task and contrasted with other levels of participant's involvement, including active movement, passive movement, and observation of a dummy's movement. In each trial, a feedback sound signal informed the

Temporal control and coordination: the multiple timer model.

We consider the psychological and neurological mechanisms involved in timed behaviors, motor or perceptual tasks that emphasize the temporal relationship between successive events. Two general models for representing temporal information are described. In one model, temporal information is based on the oscillatory activity of an endogenous pacemaker; in the other model, temporal information is interval-based with distinct elements devoted to representing different intervals. We incorporate the interval hypothesis into a process model, the multiple timer model, to account for the timing and coo

Quantifying the resolution of spatial and temporal representation in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Our ability to generate mental representation of magnitude from sensory information affects how we perceive and experience the world. Reduced resolution of the mental representations formed from sensory inputs may generate impairment in the proximal and distal information processes that utilize these representations. Impairment of spatial and temporal information processing likely underpins the non-verbal cognitive impairments observed in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). The present study builds on prior research by seeking to quantify the resolution of spatial and temporal rep
