Tooth number anomalies, including hyperdontia and hypodontia, are common congenital dental problems in the dental clinic. The precise number of teeth in a dentition is essential for proper speech, mastication, and aesthetics. Teeth are ectodermal organs that develop from the interaction of a thickened epithelium (dental placode) with the neural-crest-derived ectomesenchyme. There is extensive histological, molecular, and genetic evidence regarding how the tooth number is regulated in this serial process, but there is currently no universal classification for tooth number abnormalities. In this

OBJECTIVE: Mutations in the RUNX2 gene, a master regulator of bone formation, have been identified in cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) patients. CCD is a rare autosomal-dominant disease characterized by the delayed closure of cranial sutures, defects in clavicle formation, and supernumerary teeth. The purposes of this study were to identify genetic causes of two CCD nuclear families and to report their clinical phenotypes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified two CCD nuclear families and performed mutational analyses to clarify the underlying molecular genetic etiology.
RESULTS: Mutational anal

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of mesiodens on adjacent permanent anterior teeth according to mesiodens characteristics.
METHODS: To evaluate complications associated with mesiodens, according to its characteristics, a total of 107 children were studied who had a chief complaint of mesiodens. The number, morphology, direction of eruption, position of mesiodens, root developmental stage and complications related to adjacent permanent maxillary central incisors (APMCIs) were evaluated by radiographic imaging.
RESULTS: The final sample was 107 children and total n

BACKGROUND: Hyperdontia is a disorder of odontogenesis characterised by excess teeth. Many complications can be associated with supernumerary teeth, such as crowding, tooth displacement, diastema, deep caries, retention or impaction, delayed eruption or ectopic eruption of adjacent teeth, aesthetic problems, neuralgic manifestations, root resorption of adjacent teeth, and dentigerous cyst formation with significant bone destruction. Treatment of hyperdontia depends on the area and number of supernumerary teeth, and also on the presence of pathologic processes that can affect them and/or the te

INTRODUCTION: Supernumerary teeth are frequently reported in dental clinical practice; however, eruption in nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses is an extremely rare clinical entity.
CASE REPORT: We report two cases with a history of recurrent nasal discharge and obstruction. In both cases, clinical and radiological findings confirmed the presence of an inverted supernumerary tooth erupted in the sinonasal cavities (i.e., the right nasal fossa and left maxillary sinus, respectively). We managed the cases with transnasal endoscopic approach. A survey of the English literature identified 69 doc

Supernumerary teeth are reported to occur in both primary and permanent dentitions, but their exact aetiology remains unclear. To date, there have been no documented reports of supernumerary teeth formation subsequent to traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) to the primary incisors. This case report illustrates such an unusual consequence where a supernumerary tooth developed subsequent to a subluxation injury to teeth 51 and 61 in a 4-year-old Caucasian girl. This emphasizes the importance of reviewing TDIs, as well as providing parents with sufficient information about possible sequelae at the ti

Dental anomaly in number, size and shape might be due to excessive activation of dental lamina during the morpho-differentiation stage. Fusion is one of the most unusual and rare anomalies of shape of the teeth. It frequently involves the supernumerary teeth resulting in a challenging differential diagnosis with gemination. Dental anomalies may result in different problems such as delayed eruption and crowding; thus, early diagnosis is required for effective intervention and proper in-time treatment. The case reported here is a 4-year-old girl with bilateral supernumerary primary maxillary lat

Out of a total of 21 exencephalic p53-deficient embryonic and newborn mice, 6 (28.6%) possessed fused maxillary incisor teeth. On histological analysis of the 5 examples seen on day 19.5 of gestation and newborn mice, 3 varieties were observed: an example of 'simple' fusion, 3 examples of simple fusion each of which contained a 'dens in dente' ('tooth within a tooth'), and a single example in which the fused teeth were associated with a median supernumerary incisor tooth which, while deeply indenting the labial surface of the fused teeth, was in all locations a completely separate unit. 3-D re

In a retrospective study of 63 patients, an attempt is made to determine in how many cases retained permanent upper incisors erupt after the removal of supernumerary teeth, and what predisposing and etiological factors are of importance. It proved that the eruption of a supernumerary tooth positively contributed to the chance of a spontaneous eruption of the permanent incisors. No relationship could be demonstrated between the age of a patient from whom supernumeraries were extracted, the number of supernumeraries, the extent of root formation, marked apical displacement and the chance of spon

Supernumerary teeth are hyperdontic variants due to abnormalities during tooth development. Here, we report a case on regeneration of bony defect, which ensued following extraction of two supernumerary teeth in the mandibular premolar region, using a combination of bone grafts and platelet-rich fibrin. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time synergistic use of biomaterials with bone grafts have been used for this type of management.

BACKGROUND The extraction of impacted supernumerary teeth requires precision and accuracy to mitigate iatrogenic damage to crucial anatomical structures during dental surgical procedures, thereby enhancing postoperative healing outcomes. Dynamic navigation systems (DNS) have been applied in dentistry in maxillofacial fractures, orthognathic surgery, root canal treatment, and endodontic surgery. CASE REPORT A 22-year-old female patient visited our department to assess and manage unerupted third molars. An initial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was obtained. Radiographic and clinical

The apparently morphologically normal finding of multiple supernumerary teeth in absence of an associated systemic condition or syndrome is an uncommon phenomenon. Surgical removal of supernumerary teeth is indicated if eruption of the adjacent teeth has been delayed; altered eruption, displacement of adjacent teeth is evident or pathologies such as cystic lesion and resorption of adjacent tooth have occurred. If the risks of surgery outweigh the benefits of removal, the teeth may be left in situ and a regular radiographic monitoring should be made. How to cite this article: Gupta S, Goswami M

The term mesiodens refers to a supernumerary tooth that is present in the midline of the maxilla between the two central incisors. One or two mesiodentes may be present. We present a rare case of two sisters, in both of whom a pair of mesiodentes caused the retention of permanent incisors. They were referred to our hospital with asymptomatic delayed eruption of upper incisors. This article is written to point out genetic factors as the possible origin of supernumerary teeth.

Supernumerary teeth are relatively common in the oral cavity and are characterized by an excessive number of teeth. The term "mesiodens" refers to a supernumerary tooth located in the midline of the maxilla between the central incisors. Mesiodens may cause a variety of pathological complications such as impaction of the maxillary central incisors, tooth retention or delayed eruption of the permanent incisors, crowding, eruption within the nasal cavity, formation of diastema, intraoral infection, root anomaly, root resorption of adjacent teeth and cyst formation accompanied by bone destruction.

AIM: To evaluate the frequency and distribution of dental anomalies (DA) in a paediatric population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic digital radiographs of children between 6 and 12 years old performed at a reference centre for radiographic exams were accessed. Two calibrated examiners evaluated the radiographs. The association between variables and outcomes was assessed using non-parametric tests. The significance level was set at 5%.
RESULTS: Five hundred and twelve individuals were included and 61.3% presented at least one DA. The mean age of patients with DA (9.35±1.60) was significantl

A nine and a half years old female school child was examined in a during routine dental examination. The patient had swelling over maxillary midline area just near the labial frenum. Both the central incisors were in position. Radiographic examination revealed presence of an inverted supernumerary tooth between the roots of the central incisors. Surgical extraction of the supernumerary was planned. A unique case of inverted (upside down) mesiodens is presented.

Dysostosis cleidocranialis concerns both teeth and jaw and is characterized by supernumerary teeth, dentitio tarda, tooth impaction and eventually follicular cysts. The concept of treatment can be divided in two stages: 1. At the beginning of the delayed secondary dentition (dentitio tarda) the operative removal of the supernumerary tooth germs and 2. corresponding to the belated morphological development (dentitio tarda) the operative exposure of the impacted teeth of the secondary dentition. The first operation facilitates a morphological development and especially a vertical drift without a
