PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to obtain evidence to support the hypothesis that motor unit recruitment is reduced in the quadriceps femoris (QF) of patients with ACL rupture.
METHODS: We compared muscle torque per unit volume in the QF from injured and uninjured sides to normal subjects. If high-threshold motor unit recruitment is reduced in patients with ACL rupture, this reduction will theoretically lead to a reduction in muscle torque per unit volume compared to the control group. The subjects included 22 patients with ACL rupture and 22 subjects with no history of knee injury. To

A 12-year-old Japanese boy suffered from severe acute hepatitis and pancytopenia. The patient underwent successful bone marrow transplantation from an HLA-identical sister. Torque teno virus (TTV) DNA of genotype 1a and IgM-class antibody against the virus were detected in sera at the onset of hepatitis. TTV/1a DNA and anti-TTV/1a IgM antibody levels were undetectable on the 16th and 46th days after the onset of illness, respectively. Anti-TTV/1a IgG antibody was positive throughout the observation period. Sequential viral load and anti-TTV/1a IgM antibody suggested a primary infection of TTV/

The purpose of this study was to establish test-retest reliability of measurement procedures for quantifying isokinetic concentric peak torque (PT) at the knee using normalization methods post-stroke. A second aim was to estimate the change required to show clinically significant improvements in knee muscles strength. The isokinetic normalized PT (NPT) values for the knee extensors and flexors were measured in each participant at two different angular velocities during two sessions 1 day apart. Thirty participants with mild to moderate hemiparesis after stroke who were able to walk were tested

Powered hand tools produce reaction forces that may be associated with upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders. The handle displacement, grip force and upper limb muscle activity (electromyography (EMG)) due to the effects of operator experience, working height and distance, type of tool and fastener joint hardness were measured in this study with 15 experienced and 15 novice nutrunner users. The results show that when pistol grip handles were used to work on a horizontal surface, experienced users allowed an average handle displacement of 7.9 degrees, while novice users allowed 11.5 degrees

STUDY DESIGN: An investigation of the effects of human trunk extensor muscle fatigue on the temporal change in frequency content of the electromyogram as quantified using the Fourier and wavelet transforms during the performance of repetitive dynamic trunk extension.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether alterations in the Fourier and wavelet transform measures were consistent with a shift of the signal power to lower frequencies, and to determine which measures were more highly correlated with the decline in maximal trunk extension torque.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Objective assessment of trunk

Current-driven spin-orbit torque (SOT) enables electrical control of magnetization for next-generation memory and logic, but reducing switching current and power consumption is still a major challenge. Topological semimetals provide an attractive platform because they combine metallic conductivity with topological states that can efficiently generate spin currents. However, while most studied systems rely on accidental band inversions, the SOT response of symmetry-enforced Dirac semimetals remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the non-symmorphic symmetry-enforced Dirac semimeta

UNLABELLED: Bolted-joint tightening affects both structural integrity and line performance in EV chassis assembly, yet production torque tables are often conservative to accommodate variability in joint mechanics and shop-floor conditions. This study uses a deployable digital-twin workflow to reduce torque variants while jointly considering mechanics constraints, AGV-related logistics, and cost/OEE objectives. The workflow couples (i) a torque–preload joint model with vibration and fatigue checks, (ii) an uncertainty-calibrated, value-aware LSTM for quality-risk prediction from torque–angle si

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a progressive condition in older adults associated with increased risks of falls, disability, hospitalization, and mortality. Despite its clinical relevance, early and accurate diagnosis remains limited due to reliance on indirect and subjective screening methods. This study introduces a passive, camera-based framework, Motion-AI Integrated Surveillance for the Elderly (MAISE), that seamlessly estimates joint torque from natural daily movements to provide a functional assessment of lower-limb muscle performance. METHODS: The framework utilizes a CoP (Center of Pressur

Utilizing myoelectric control systems in robotic lower-limb prosthetics is becoming increasingly prevalent, capturing user intent. However, AI-based myoelectric systems often experience high latency and require extensive training data and calibration. Our study introduces a minimalist ridge regression approach for interpreting surface electromyography signals, enabling real-time control of ankle prosthetics. The proof-of-concept system features three open-loop control modes: Position, Velocity, and Torque, which require minimal calibration. Five able-bodied participants participated in a Targe

In this study, we aimed to determine whether the semitendinosus (ST) and biceps femoris long head (BF) exhibit systematically distinct preferred directions (PDs) and to evaluate the biomechanical mechanisms underlying the PDs. A total of 21 healthy young adults performed isometric torque tasks in 16 sagittal-plane directions while surface electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded from six lower limb muscles. Joint torque was estimated with inverse dynamics, and muscle PDs were determined through linear regression of EMG against torque data. Optimal PDs were predicted with static optimizatio

Upper limb assistive exoskeletons help stroke patients by assisting arm movement in impaired individuals. However, effective control of these systems to help stroke survivors is a complex task. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to enhance the control of upper limb assistive exoskeletons by using torque estimation and prediction in a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller loop to more optimally integrate the torque of the exoskeleton robot, which aims to eliminate system uncertainties. First, a model for torque estimation from Electromyography (EMG) signals and a predictive

The rising complexity of artificial intelligence and data-intensive applications drives the demand for memristive devices to support high-performance and scalable processing-in-memory (PIM) architectures. While three- and four-terminal spintronic PIM solutions show promise, they face scalability challenges due to large footprints. This study demonstrates a two-terminal spin-orbit torque (SOT)-driven giant magnetoresistance (GMR) memristive device utilizing a Pt/Co/Cu/CoTb stack, integrating data storage and logic functions within a single unit. Ten nonvolatile resistance states are achieved by

Current-induced spin-orbit torque has emerged as a promising method for achieving energy-efficient magnetization switching in advanced spintronic devices. Over the past few decades, researchers have primarily focused on enhancing spin current generation through the spin Hall effect, relying predominantly on the spin degree of freedom (DoF) of the electron, while neglecting its orbital counterparts. In this work, by leveraging both spin and orbital DoFs, we have enhanced net damping-like torque efficiency (ξDLE) by 1.7 times compared to the sample with only Pt (1.5 nm) as the spin Hall layer. F

Current-induced domain-wall motion (CIDWM) in a synthetic antiferromagnet is a key phenomenon for developing potential high-density-packed magnetic domain-wall memory with fast operation. Here, CIDWM is reported in the antiferromagnetically-coupled two Co layers through the Ir interlayer sandwiched by the two Pt layers: Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt. The top and bottom Pt layers play a role for generating the spin current coming from the spin Hall effect, which gives rise to the dual spin-orbit torque (SOT) acting on the perpendicular magnetizations of the Co layers. Although a simple argument would predict

Using biomarkers to tailor immunosuppressive therapy after kidney transplantation was proposed to improve clinical care. Timely and individual adaptions of immunosuppression could reduce therapy-related side effects, such as infections, cardiovascular morbidity and malignancy, and further lower the risk of allograft rejection. Despite promising preliminary studies, evidence for implementing such a biomarker in clinical care is insufficient. Prominent candidates for immunologic monitoring after kidney transplantation include donor human leukocyte antigen-specific antibodies, donor-derived cell-

STUDY DESIGN: Biomechanical/basic science.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of dental cement augmentation of lateral mass screws in the cervical spine.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Premature loosening and fixation failure are known problems of screw fixation of the spine, especially in cases of poor bone quality. Cement augmentation of screws with PMMA has limited utility in the cervical spine due to the small size of the bone and high risk of extravasation. Augmentation with dental cement may present a viable solution for posterior cervical spinal screw fixation.
METHODS: Fifteen cadaver
