Simulating sharp geometric features in six degrees-of-freedom haptic rendering.

It is a challenging problem to achieve six degree-of-freedom (DoF) haptic simulation of subtle force feelings caused by contacts at sharp geometric features in multi-region contact scenarios. We design a novel sphere-tree model for objects with sharp features and use a configuration-based optimization method to compute feedback force and torque. Given a triangle mesh of an object, a sphere-tree model is created based on dihedral angles between pairs of adjacent triangles. The model consists of a hierarchical sphere-tree for global shape and a linked-list of spheres for local areas with sharp f

Bimanual coordination in dyslexic adults.

Various types of dyslexia have been associated with tactile-motor coordination deficits and inefficient transfer of information between the two cerebral hemispheres. Twenty-one dyslexic adults were compared to 21 controls on the Bimanual Coordination Task, a test of tactile-motor coordination and interhemispheric collaboration. When compared to control subjects, dyslexics showed a consistent pattern of deficits in bimanual motor coordination, both with and without visual feedback. In particular, dyslexics had greater difficulty relative to normals when the left hand had to move faster than the

Occurrence and co-occurrence of hallucinations by modality in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

It is not only unclear why hallucinations in schizophrenia occur with different prevalence by modality, but also to what extent they do. Reliable prevalence estimates of hallucinations by modality in schizophrenia are currently lacking, particularly for non-auditory hallucinations. Studies have also tended to report lifetime, not point prevalence by modality. This study assessed the prevalence and co-occurrence of hallucinations, for both lifetime and point prevalence, across the auditory, visual, olfactory, and tactile modalities, in people diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia-spectrum disord

Temporal dynamics of early somatosensory processing in goal-directed actions.

Tactile sensitivity is temporally modulated on a moving limb. Yet the neural mechanisms underlying this modulation remain unclear. Using electroencephalography, we examined the temporal dynamics of early somatosensory processing during goal-directed reaching. Participants (self-reported gender: 22 female, 16 male) reached for their unseen left hand while a brief standard vibration of a fixed intensity was applied to the moving right index finger in different movement phases. After each reach, participants compared this standard with a second comparison vibration of varying intensity applied to

Active touch in tactile perceptual discrimination: brain activity and behavioral responses to surface differences.

This study investigates the neural and behavioral mechanisms of tactile perceptual discrimination using fMRI and a set of wrinkled surface stimuli with varying textures. Fifteen female participants were tasked with distinguishing between different surfaces by touch alone. Behavioral results demonstrated variable discriminability across conditions, reflecting the tactile sensitivity of human fingertips. Neural analysis showed varied brain activations tied to the task's difficulty. In the easiest least fine-grained discrimination condition, widespread activations were observed across sensory and

Vibrotactile Phantom Sensations in Haptic Wrist Rotation Guidance.

Haptic motion guidance has the potential to advance assistive technologies that support humans in movement tasks. This study systematically evaluates wrist rotation guidance methods in a 2 × 2 repeated measures design using a wearable vibrotactile feedback device. In two tasks, we investigate the benefits of encoding the current target distance in the cue strength and conveying additional information about the target location by incorporating a tactile illusion known as phantom sensation. For a directional response task, we analyze reaction times and error rates, and for an angle targeting tas

Tactile Enhancement of Mid-Air Ultrasonic Stimulation by Wrist Vibration: Perceived Intensity and Pattern Recognition.

This study investigates methods to enhance the perceived intensity of mid-air ultrasonic tactile stimuli through the perceptual phenomenon of tactile enhancement. By presenting a brief vibrotactile stimulus to the wrist before stimulating the palm with a mid-air ultrasonic stimulus of the same frequency, we demonstrated that the perceived intensity could be increased by up to 1.7 times. A second user study further examined the effectiveness of this method, revealing that recognition of number-patterned mid-air stimuli was significantly improved by 7.8% with the presence of wrist vibration. The

Physical correlates of human-like softness elicit high tactile pleasantness.

Touching an object can elicit affective sensations. Because these sensations are critical for social interaction, tactile preferences may be adapted to the characteristics of the human body. We have previously shown that compliance, a physical correlate of softness, increased the tactile pleasantness of a deformable surface. However, the extent to which object compliance similar to the human body elicits tactile pleasantness remains unknown. We addressed this question by using a wide range of compliances and by measuring the distribution of compliance of human body parts. The participants nume

Vicarious ratings of social touch reflect the anatomical distribution & velocity tuning of C-tactile afferents: A hedonic homunculus?

A subclass of C-fibres, C-tactile afferents (CTs), have been discovered which respond preferentially to low force/velocity stroking touch, that is typically perceived as pleasant. Molecular genetic visualization of these low-threshold mechanosensitive C-fibres (CLTMs) in mice revealed a denser distribution in dorsal than ventral thoracic sites, scattered distal limb innervation and a complete absence from glabrous paw skin (Liu et al., 2007). Here we used third-party ratings to examine whether affective responses to social touch reflect the anatomical distribution and velocity tuning of CTs. P

A Single Session of Mirror-based Tactile and Motor Training Improves Tactile Dysfunction in Children with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy: A Replicated Randomized Controlled Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: This replicated randomized controlled crossover case series investigated the effect of mirror-based tactile and motor training on tactile registration and perception in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP). METHODS: Six children with UCP (6-18 years; median 10 years, five male, three-left hemiplegia, four-manual ability classification system (MACS) I, one MACS II and one MACS III) participated. They attended two 90-minute sessions - one of mirror-based training and one of standard practice, bimanual therapy - in alternated order. Tactile registration (Semmes Weinstein M

The effects of intensive bimanual training with and without tactile training on tactile function in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy: A pilot study.

Children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP) often have tactile impairments. Intensive bimanual training improves the motor abilities, but the effects on the sensory system have not been studied. Here we compare the effects of bimanual training with and without tactile training on tactile impairments. Twenty children with USCP (6-15.5 years; MACS: I-III) were randomized to receive either bimanual therapy (HABIT) or HABIT+tactile training (HABIT+T). All participants received 82 h of standardized HABIT. In addition 8 sessions of 1h were provided to both groups. The HABIT+T group receiv

The role of auditory and haptic cues in object enumeration within containers.

Everyday experience suggests that handheld containers convey auditory and haptic information about their contents. The primary objective of this study was to examine how these two sources of information interact. Across three experiments, participants estimated the number of beads in cardboard boxes under three sensory conditions: haptics-only, auditory-only, and auditory-haptic. We hypothesized that the auditory-haptic condition would yield more accurate and precise estimates. A secondary objective was to assess the effects of time and manipulation constraints. In Experiment 1, participants w

Sensory Substitution and Embodiment Shape Performance and Immersion in Teleoperated Settings.

Telemanipulation allows remote operations using specialized tools, often under limited sensory input, such as the absence of haptic feedback. With practice, these tools can become embodied extensions of the user, enhancing Presence. Sensory Substitution, conveying information from one sensory modality through another, can mitigate sensory limitations in such tasks. We developed the Visual-Tactile Sensory Substitution Task to investigate learning of Sensory Substitution while accounting for Embodiment and Presence experience. Forty participants completed a within-subjects repeated-measures desi

Distorted body representation in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: A core symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN) is a distorted body representation. AN often has an onset in puberty. Therefore, it is pivotal to gain a better understanding of these distortions in adolescents with AN. This study aimed to capture the multidimensional perspective of body representation and investigate to what extent adolescent girls with AN differ from adolescent girls without AN on five domains of body representation, namely bodily cognitions and attitudes, body checking and body avoidant behaviors, visual perception, tactile perception, and affordance perception. METHODS

Eyes and hand are both reliable at localizing somatosensory targets.

Body representations (BR) for action are critical to perform accurate movements. Yet, behavioral measures suggest that BR are distorted even in healthy people. However, the upper limb has mostly been used as a probe so far, making difficult to decide whether BR are truly distorted or whether this depends on the effector used as a readout. Here, we aimed to assess in healthy humans the accuracy of the eye and hand effectors in localizing somatosensory targets, to determine whether they may probe BR similarly. Twenty-six participants completed two localization tasks in which they had to localize

Neural Substrates of Body Ownership and Agency during Voluntary Movement.

Body ownership and the sense of agency are two central aspects of bodily self-consciousness. While multiple neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural correlates of body ownership and agency separately, few studies have investigated the relationship between these two aspects during voluntary movement when such experiences naturally combine. By eliciting the moving rubber hand illusion with active or passive finger movements during functional magnetic resonance imaging, we isolated activations reflecting the sense of body ownership and agency, respectively, as well as their interaction,

The role of vibration in tactile speed perception.

The relative motion between the surface of an object and our fingers produces patterns of skin deformation such as stretch, indentation, and vibrations. In this study, we hypothesized that motion-induced vibrations are combined with other tactile cues for the discrimination of tactile speed. Specifically, we hypothesized that vibrations provide a critical cue to tactile speed on surfaces lacking individually detectable features like dots or ridges. Thus masking vibrations unrelated to slip motion should impair the discriminability of tactile speed, and the effect should be surface-dependent. T

Representational pseudoneglect: a review.

Pseudoneglect, the tendency to be biased towards the left-hand side of space, is a robust and consistent behavioural observation best demonstrated on the task of visuospatial line bisection, where participants are asked to centrally bisect visually presented horizontal lines at the perceived centre. A number of studies have revealed that a representational form of pseudoneglect exists, occurring when participants are asked to either mentally represent a stimulus or explore a stimulus using touch in the complete absence of direct visuospatial processing. Despite the growing number of studies th

Thin-Film Transistor Based Active Taxel for Multimode Tactile Perception and Fused Processing.

Skin is the largest-area organ for humans and embodied intelligent robots, serving as a critical interface for environmental interaction. Thanks to the well-organized taxel, dynamic-taxel-density and fully body wrapping, human skin works as an efficient tactile system for embodied intelligent robots to emulate. Thin-film transistor (TFT) technology is a well-known mature semiconductor process for mass production with the largest-area substrate, inherently suitable for artificial skin developing. In this work, we propose an active multimode fused (AMF) artificial skin developed from a standard
