Impact of transurethral resection of bladder tumors on sexual function and quality of life using ePROMs in patients with bladder cancer- a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) on patients' quality of life (QoL) and sexual function is underrepresented in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate sexual function and QoL following TURBT, using electronic patient reported outcome questionnaires (ePROMs). METHODS: Patients undergoing TURBT were surveyed using a digital ePROM system (Heartbeat Medical). Sexual function and QoL were assessed using the Male/Female LUTS Sexual Function module (ICIQ-MLUTSsex/FLUTSsex) at 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively and the EORTC QLQ-NMIBC 24. L

First and second transurethral resections in intermediate-high risk bladder cancer: impact of the surgeon's volume on the recurrence and progression of primary bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the impact of surgeon's volume on recurrence and progression in patients with newly diagnosed transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder after first transurethral resection (TUR) and second-TUR. METHODS: Between March 2005 and December 2012, 209 patients with intermediate-high risk primary bladder cancer who received second TUR within 2 to 6 weeks following the initial resection were prospectively included in a database and retrospectively analyzed. Surgeons were stratified into high-volume (>100 TUR) and low-volume (<100 TUR). Tumor recurrence and progression were ana

Prognosis of patients with T1 bladder cancer after en bloc transurethral resection of bladder tumor stratified by invasion to the level of the muscularis mucosa.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prognosis of patients with pT1 bladder cancer who underwent en bloc resection of bladder tumors (ERBTs), stratified by invasion to the muscularis mucosa (MM) level. METHODS: Among 64 specimens obtained by ERBT with bipolar energy from patients with pT1 bladder cancer, MM was detected in 61 specimens. Thus, 61 specimens were included in this retrospective study. Patients were stratified by invasion to the MM level (pT1a, invasion above the MM level; pT1b, invasion within the MM level; and pT1c, invasion beyond the MM level). In specimens with discontinuous MM, invasion

Predicting Recurrence and Progression in Contemporary Patients with NMIBC Undergoing Blue Light Cystoscopy-Aided Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor.

BACKGROUND: Although blue light cystoscopy (BLC) is recommended by clinical practice guidelines to improve cancer detection, predictive models for patients undergoing BLC are lacking. We therefore evaluated the associations of clinicopathologic features with recurrence and progression in a contemporary cohort of patients treated with BLC to develop a risk prediction model. METHODS: We identified patients aged 18-89 years in the multi-institutional Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview Registry who underwent BLC-aided TURBT between 2014-2023. Associations of baseline characteristics with recurren

Oncologic outcomes of transurethral resection versus laser excision for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: a SEER retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) remains the standard surgical approach for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, whether newer laser-based/en bloc techniques translate into durable oncologic benefits beyond perioperative and specimen-quality advantages remains controversial, and population-level evidence on recurrence and progression-particularly among patients who subsequently recur-is limited. This study compared oncologic outcomes between TURBT and transurethral laser excision of bladder tumor (TULBT) in patients with NMIBC using the Surveillance,

Therapeutic and prognostic value of repeat transurethral resection for high-grade Ta bladder cancer: a propensity score matching analysis.

High-grade Ta bladder cancer, although anatomically confined to the mucosa, exhibits aggressive biological behavior with high recurrence rate and progression risks. The role of repeat transurethral resection of bladder tumor (Re-TURBT) in this specific population remains controversial. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic and prognostic value of Re-TURBT for high-grade Ta non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. A total of 324 patients with pathologically confirmed high-grade Ta urothelial carcinoma who underwent in

Obturator Nerve Block Performed Blinded Versus by Ultrasound-guidence for Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Image guidance (IG) and robotic-assisted (RA) surgery are modern technological advancements that have provided novel ways to perform precise and accurate spinal surgery. These innovations supply real-time, three-dimensional imaging information to aid in instrumentation, decompression, and implant placement. Although nothing can replace the knowledge and expertise of an experienced spine surgeon, these platforms do have the potential to supplement the individual surgeon's capabilities. Specific advantages include more precise pedicle screw placement, minimally invasive surgery with less relianc

Reduced Recurrence Rates Are Associated with Photodynamic Diagnostics Compared to White Light after Extended Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors.

One pillar in treating non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is the complete and high-quality transurethral resection of the primary tumor (TURBT). However, even after a high-quality primary resection, the residual tumor risk is considerable, thus requiring a re-TURBT. Resections performed with the aid of a photodynamic diagnostics report improved recurrence-free survival rates and increased detection rates of carcinoma in situ (CIS). This monocentric retrospective study reports on patients treated with an extended TURBT procedure using conventional white-light cystoscopy or photodynamic

Bladder neoplasms after nephroureterectomy: does the surgery of the lower ureter, transurethral resection or open surgery, influence the evolution?

OBJECTIVE: Nephroureterectomy is the treatment of choice for tumors of the upper urinary tract (UUTT). In 1952, a modified version of this technique was described, involving endoscopic detachment of the ureter followed by nephroureterectomy with a single lumbar incision. We reviewed a retrospective survey to assess whether UUTT patients treated with nephroureterectomy with no prior history of bladder tumor had different rates of incidence or different sites of bladder recurrence according to the specific technique employed. METHODS: Patients were divided into group A, 87 patients who underwen

Clinical value of VI-RADS score in predicting repeat transurethral resection in primary bladder cancer: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Repeat transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is recommended in selected patients with newly diagnosed bladder cancer to improve staging accuracy and detect residual disease, but it also increases morbidity and treatment burden. The Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) has shown high accuracy for predicting muscle invasion, whereas its role in identifying patients who undergo repeat TURBT remains unclear. This study evaluated the clinical value of VI-RADS for predicting repeat TURBT status in primary bladder cancer. METHODS: This single-center prospective

Does histological prostatic inflammation during transurethral resection of the prostate for bladder outlet obstruction affect post-operative urinary outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is a common cause for bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. The pathophysiology of BPH is multifactorial and inflammation has been linked with progression of BPH and LUTS. The association between histological prostatitis found at transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and adverse post-operative urinary outcomes is not clearly defined. Our aim was to evaluate the association between histological prostatitis and adverse post-operative urinary outcomes following TURP procedure. METHODS: Patients who h

[A Case of Para-Aortic Lymph Node Metastasis 10 Years after Transurethral Resection for Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer].

A 67-year-old man with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) underwent transurethral resection (TUR) in January 2008. The pathological diagnosis was urothelial carcinoma (UC), grade 2, pT1. A second TUR was performed 2 months later, and no evidence of malignancy was found. After surgery, he was followed up via cystoscopy and urine cytology for 9 years, with no recurrence of the bladder tumor. In November 2017, he visited our orthopedic department complaining of pain in his left leg. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enlarged para-aortic lymph node (a suspected metastasis). Computed t

Perivesical inflammation and necrosis due to mitomycin C instillation after transurethral resection of bladder tumor: we must be vigilant!

The instillation of chemotherapeutic agents after transurethral resection of bladder tumor as an adjuvant treatment in bladder tumors is accepted as being safe if there is no associated bladder perforation. Mitomycin C (MMC) is a widely used agent for the adjuvant treatment of bladder tumors. A patient who developed MMC-induced bladder perforation and perivesical necrosis after an uneventful endoscopic tumor is presented. We suggest that the possible reason for such a complication could be deep resection at the anterior bladder wall. The treatment of the situation continued for an extended per

Impact on Japanese healthcare economics of photodynamic diagnosis-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumor for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: A multicenter retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Bladder cancer, especially non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), is one of the most costly cancers owing to its long-term management. Photodynamic diagnosis-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumor (PDD-TURBT) reduces the risk of intravesical recurrence. However, its impact on healthcare economics in Japan remains unclear. We evaluated the comprehensive medical costs of Japanese healthcare economics regarding PDD-TURBT. METHODS: This large-scale, multicenter, retrospective study included a dataset of 1531 patients who were diagnosed with primary NMIBC who underwent
