Detection of Lymnaea columella infection by Fasciola hepatica through Multiplex-PCR.

From complete mitochondrial DNA sequence of Fasciola hepatica available in Genbank, specific primers were designed for a conserved and repetitive region of this trematode. A pair of primers was used for diagnosis of infected Lymnaea columella by F. hepatica during the pre-patent period simultaneously with another pair of primers which amplified the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA from L. columella in a single Multiplex-PCR. The amplification generated a ladder band profile specific for F. hepatica. This profile was observed in positive molluscs at different times of infection,

An update on snail and trematode communities in the Sanyati Basin of Lake Kariba: New snail and trematode species but no human schistosomes.

BACKGROUND: The construction of Lake Kariba brought about a rise in the incidence of schistosomiasis in its surrounding towns of Kariba (Zimbabwe) and Siavonga (Zambia). After extensive control programs in Kariba, schistosomiasis prevalence dropped significantly. The objective of this study was to revisit the same localities sampled by Chimbari et al. (2003), and provide an update on the snail community and prevalence of trematodes in the Northern shore of Lake Kariba while focusing on planorbid species. METHODS: Monthly sampling of snails at 16 sites along the Northern shoreline of Lake Kari

Geographical distribution of Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957 (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae).

BACKGROUND: Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957 is an OIE (Office International des Epizooties)-listed parasitic pathogen and had until the current study been reported from 19 countries across Europe, although many of these records require confirmation. The last comprehensive evaluation regarding the distribution of G. salaris, however, was made in 2007, although some of the states identified as being G. salaris-positive were ascribed this status based on misidentifications, on partial data resulting from either morphological or molecular tests, or from records that have not been revisited sin

Cotylogaster basiri Siddiqi & Cable, 1960 (Aspidobothrea: Aspidogastridae) in Pogonias cromis (Linnaeus, 1766) (Perciformes: Sciaenidae): first report from Brazil.

Up until now, there have been few studies of the helminth fauna of Brazilian populations of Pogonias cromis. In North America, P. cromis is known to be a definitive host of Cotylogaster basiri, although there have been no reports of any species of Cotylogaster infecting fish in Brazil. During necropsies of marine fish obtained from professional fisherman in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, specimens of C. basiri were found in the intestine and rectum of P. cromis. In comparison with previous studies, differences were found in relation to the number of lobes in the buccal disc and the de

Notocotylid Trematodes of Wild Birds in Türkiye: A Morphological Study With New Country Records.

BACKGROUND: The family Notocotylidae, established by Lühe in 1909, comprises trematode species characterized by the absence of a ventral sucker and pharynx, as well as by the presence of elongated filaments at the poles of their eggs. Members of this family primarily parasitize waterfowl, although infections have also been reported in some mammalian hosts. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of notocotylid trematodes in wild birds inhabiting aquatic environments in Türkiye. METHODS: A total of 57 birds representing 21 species were examined to assess the Notocoty

Cloning and expression of 21.1-kDa tegumental protein of Clonorchis sinensis and human antibody response to it as a trematode-nematode pan-specific serodiagnosis antigen.

A complete cDNA encoding a 21.1-kDa tegumental protein (CsTP21.1) was recognized from Clonorchis sinensis adult full-length cDNA plasmid library by bioinformatics analysis. Recombinant CsTP21.1 was highly expressed in Escherichia coli, purified by affinity chromatography, and identified by Western blotting. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that CsTP21.1 is localized in the tegument of the adult worm. The rCsTP21.1-specific IgG1, IgG2, and IgG4 subclasses could be detected in the sera of clonorchiasis patients by ELISA, but their sensitivity was much lower than that of total IgG. The sensitivi

[Parasitic factor and cancer].

There is opinion in the literature as to that liver trematode infections, such as opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis, fascioliasis, and metorchiasis, can induce cancer of the liver pancreas, intestine - this all is clinically observed. The authors were the first in world practice to show the development of a hepatic blastomatous process in animals (albino rats, cats) with opisthorchiasis in 13%; cancer developed in 28 and 56% with the use of a hepatotropic carcinogen and combined (opisthorchiasis + a carcinogen) exposure, respectively. Throughout his life, a human being can easily catch these trem

Spatial covariation of local abundance among different parasite species: the effect of shared hosts.

Within any parasite species, abundance varies spatially, reaching higher values in certain localities than in others, presumably reflecting the local availability of host resources or the local suitability of habitat characteristics for free-living stages. In the absence of strong interactions between two species of helminths with complex life cycles, we might predict that the degree to which their abundances covary spatially is determined by their common resource requirements, i.e. how many host species they share throughout their life cycles. We test this prediction using five trematode spec

Predation cues amplify the effects of parasites on the personality of a keystone grazer.

Parasites can alter species interactions either by modifying infected host behaviour or by influencing behavioural responses in uninfected individuals. Salt marsh ecosystems are characterized by a predator-prey interaction between the keystone grazer, Littoraria irrorata, and its main predator, Callinectes sapidus, both integral players in mediating the productivity of these habitats. Littoraria also acts as the first intermediate host for at least four species of digenetic trematode. Parasite infection has been shown to decrease grazing and climbing in populations of Littoraria, although effe

Local adaptation to parasite selective pressure: comparing three congeneric co-occurring hosts.

Local adaptation may optimize an organism's investment in defenses in response to the risk of infection by spatially heterogeneous parasites and other natural enemies. However, local adaptation may be constrained if recruitment is decoupled from selective pressure experienced by the parent generation. We predicted that the ability of three intertidal littorinid snail species to defend against trematode parasites would depend on prior levels of population exposure to parasites and on larval dispersal mode, a proxy for population openness. In a common garden experiment, for two snail species wit

Parasitism of the Zweeloo Woman: Dicrocoeliasis evidenced in a Roman period bog mummy.

We undertook the analysis of Zweeloo Woman, a bog mummy from the Netherlands, to assess her parasitic state. Evidence of infection came from two areas: (1) liver paraffin sections and (2) microfossils washed from an intestinal section. Although the liver had shrunken considerably, objects consistent with operculated trematode eggs were found. After evaluating the range of trematode species that produce eggs in liver tissue, we arrived at the diagnosis of Dicrocoelium dendriticum. Although only 0.1ml of sediment was recovered from an intestinal section, eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuri

Helminth community structure in tadpoles of northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) and Woodhouse's toads (Bufo woodhousii) from Nebraska.

Currently, little information is available on helminth community structure in tadpoles, the ephemeral, feeding, non-reproductive larva stages of anurans. We examined the helminth community structure in tadpoles of northern leopard frogs, Rana pipiens, and Woodhouse's toads, Bufo woodhousii, from a first-order stream in Western Nebraska. Specifically, we were interested in how species-specific difference in size, time to metamorphosis, and habitat partitioning among larval anurans affect their helminth community structure. From June-July 2009, we collected 30 tadpoles of northern leopard frogs,

Role for a somatically diversified lectin in resistance of an invertebrate to parasite infection.

Invertebrates lack adaptive immune systems homologous to those of vertebrates, yet it is becoming increasingly clear that they can produce diversified antigen recognition molecules. We have previously noted that the snail Biomphalaria glabrata produces a secreted lectin, fibrinogen-related protein 3 (FREP3), unusual among invertebrate defense molecules because it is somatically diversified by gene conversion and point mutation. Here we implicate FREP3 in playing a central role in resistance to a major group of snail pathogens, digenetic trematodes. FREP3 is up-regulated in three models of resi

[Temporary and permanent breeding sites for Biomphalaria in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, PE].

A malacological survey of permanent and temporary breeding sites was conducted in the Piedade neighborhood of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Pernambuco, between November 2006 and November 2007, with the aim of determining the malacological fauna at this locality, along with the potential for Schistosomiasis mansoni transmission. In addition to Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818), the molluscs Drepanotrema cimex (Moricand, 1837), Pomacea sp and Melanoides tuberculatus (Muller, 1774) were collected. Among the specimens of Biomphalaria glabrata that were collected, 1,490 were found alive, and 74 (5%) wer

The metabolic control of schistosome egg production.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by infection with trematode parasites of the genus Schistosoma. Despite ongoing treatment programmes, the prevalence of schistosomiasis has failed to decline and the disease remains a cause of severe morbidity in millions of people. Understanding the biology of egg production by schistosomes is critical since eggs allow transmission of the infection, and when trapped in host tissues induce the immune responses that are responsible for the pathologic changes that underlie disease development. Unusually among trematodes, adult schistosomes e

Metacercarial infection of wild Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from Brazil.

Fingerlings of Oreochromis niloticus collected in an artificial urban lake from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were evaluated for natural infection with trematodes. Morphological taxonomic identification of four fluke species was performed in O. niloticus examined, and the total prevalence of metacercariae was 60.7% (37/61). Centrocestus formosanus, a heterophyid found in the gills, was the species with the highest prevalence and mean intensity of infection (31.1% and 3.42 (1-42), resp.), followed by the diplostomid Austrodiplostomum compactum (29.5% and 1.27 (1-2)) recovered from the e
