Mixed exposure to haloacetaldehyde disinfection by-products exacerbates lipid aggregation in the liver of mice.

Haloacetaldehyde disinfection by-products (HAL-DBPs) are among the top three unregulated DBPs found in drinking water. The cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of HALs are much higher than that of the regulated trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. Previous studies have mainly focused on the toxic effects of single HAL, with few examining the toxic effects of mixed exposures to HALs. The study aimed to observe the effects of mixed exposures of 1∼1000X the realistic level of HALs on the hepatotoxicity and lipid metabolism of C57BL/6J mice, based on the component and concentration of HALs detected in t

Analysis of the Kinetics of Swimming Pool Water Reaction in Analytical Device Reproducing Its Circulation on a Small Scale.

The most common cause of diseases in swimming pools is the lack of sanitary control of water quality; water may contain microbiological and chemical contaminants. Among the people most at risk of infection are children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised people. The origin of the problem is a need to develop a system that can predict the formation of chlorine water disinfection by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs). THMs are volatile organic compounds from the group of alkyl halides, carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, and bioaccumulating. Long-term exposure, even to low concentrati

Efficacy of ozone for removal of pesticides, metals and indicator virus from reverse osmosis concentrates generated during potable reuse of municipal wastewaters.

This study evaluated ozone treatment to address concerns regarding the discharge to marine waters of chemical contaminants and pathogens in reverse osmosis (RO) concentrates generated during the potable reuse of municipal wastewaters. Previous studies indicated that contaminants can be sorted into five groups based on their reaction rate constants with ozone and hydroxyl radical to predict degradation of chemical contaminants during ozonation of municipal effluents. Spiking representatives of each group into five RO concentrate samples, this study demonstrated that the same contaminant groupin

Case-control study of bladder cancer and chlorination by-products in treated water (Ontario, Canada).

Chlorine is by far the most commonly used chemical for the disinfection of water supplies in North America. However, chlorine reacts with organic material in the raw water producing a number of halogenated hydrocarbon by-products. This population-based case-control study in Ontario, Canada examined the relationship between bladder cancer and exposure to chlorination by-products in public water supplies. Residence and water source histories and data from municipal water supplies were used to estimate individual exposure according to water source, chlorination status, and by-product levels (repr

Drinking water nitrate, disinfection byproducts, and prostate cancer incidence in the Agricultural Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Drinking water can be an important source of exposure to nitrate and disinfection by-products, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). N-nitroso compounds formed endogenously after nitrate ingestion are animal carcinogens, and THM and HAA exposures increase the risk of some cancers. Our objectives were to evaluate associations of drinking water nitrate and disinfection byproducts with total and aggressive (distant stage, poorly differentiated grade, fatal, or Gleason score ≥7) prostate cancer in the Agricultural Health Study cohort. METHODS: Male participants

[Exposure to organic halogen compounds in drinking water of 9 Italian regions: exposure to chlorites, chlorates, thrihalomethanes, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene].

This study investigated the exposure to organohalogens compounds in drinking water from 9 Italian towns (Udine, Genova, Parma, Modena, Siena, Roma, L'Aquila, Napoli and Catania). Overall, 1199 samples collected from 72 waterworks were analyzed. THMs, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene were evaluated using the head-space gas chromatographic technique (detection limit of 0.01 microg/l; chlorite and chlorate analysis was performed by ion chromatography (detection limit of 20 microg/l). THMs were evidenced in 925 samples (77%) (median value: 1.12 micro/l; range: 0.01-54 mciro/l) and 7 were

Reductive dehalogenation of bromoform in aqueous solution.

The hybrid semiconducter-macrocycle catalyst TiO2-cobalt phthalocyanine promotes the solar photolysis of aqueous bromoform under anaerobic conditions. The major decomposition products are dibromoethane and HBr. Bromomethane and methane were produced only after prolonged photolysis (30 hr). Acetone, derived from added 2-propanol, was the only observed oxidation product. Preliminary experiments showed that electrolytic reduction of aqueous carbon tetrachloride at a vitamin B12-modified silver electrode produced the expected lower homologues but with surprisingly high yields of methane.

Ingested nitrate and nitrite, drinking water disinfection by-products, and incidence of thyroid cancer among licensed pesticide applicators and spouses in the Agricultural Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Ingested nitrate and nitrite and some disinfection by-products (DBPs) are suspected carcinogens. However, epidemiologic evidence linking these exposures to thyroid cancer (TC) is limited. OBJECTIVES: We examined water nitrate and dietary nitrate and nitrite exposures in relation to incident TC in the Agricultural Health Study. We stratified analyses by sex and smoking status. We also explored associations with two drinking water DBPs, total trihalomethanes (TTHM) and five haloacetic acids (HAA5). METHODS: We determined the primary drinking water source for participants at enrollm

Chlorination by-products in tap water and semen quality in England and Wales.

OBJECTIVES: Disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been associated with adverse semen outcomes in laboratory animals, although the evidence for trihalomethanes (THMs) is limited. Three small epidemiological studies found little evidence for an association between DBPs and adverse semen outcomes in humans. Using data from a large case-referent study (Chemicals and Pregnancy Study, Chaps-UK), we investigated the association between total THM (TTHM), chloroform and total brominated THMs and sperm concentration, percent motile sperm and motile sperm concentration (MSC). METHODS: Chaps-UK recruited

Limited representation of drinking-water contaminants in pregnancy-birth cohorts.

Water contamination and noise have been consistently the least assessed environmental/lifestyle exposures in pregnancy-birth cohorts (PBC). Water quality surveillance data collected during the past decade within urban drinking-water distribution systems call for re-evaluation of water and health issues in the developed world. The objectives of this scientific commentary were to (i) highlight the extent of appraisal of water contamination in exposure assessment studies of PBC, worldwide, and (ii) propose recommendations to increase awareness of emerging water-related risks through their improve

Ultraviolet irradiation alters carbonyl structures to promote toxic halogenated carbonyl disinfection byproduct formation in drinking water.

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is widely used in drinking water treatment, yet its effects on halogenated carbonyl disinfection by-product (DBP) formation during subsequent chlorination remain insufficiently understood. This study integrated pilot-scale field experiments, bench-scale UV fluence experiments, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazide (TSH) carbonyl derivatization, targeted carbonyl analysis, and model-compound chlorination to link UV-induced dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation with halogenated aldehyde (HAL) and halogenated ketone (HK) format

Excessive disinfection aggravated the environmental prevalence of antimicrobial resistance during COVID-19 pandemic.

During COVID-19 pandemic, chemicals from excessive consumption of pharmaceuticals and disinfectants i.e., antibiotics, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), and trihalomethanes (THMs), flowed into the urban environment, imposing unprecedented selective pressure to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To decipher the obscure character pandemic-related chemicals portrayed in altering environmental AMR, 40 environmental samples covering water and soil matrix from surroundings of Wuhan designated hospitals were collected on March 2020 and June 2020. Chemical concentrations and antibiotic resistance gen

A rapid antimicrobial photodynamic water treatment strategy utilizing a xanthene dye with subsequent removal by Goethite Nanoparticles.

Although widely accepted as a water sterilisation technique, chlorination results in the production of potentially harmful by-products, mainly Trihalomethanes. Furthermore, the chlorination process requires specialised infrastructure, management and high costs. In this research paper a potential alternative sterilisation technique was investigated. This rapid three-step process utilized Goethite Nanoparticles and the photosensitising capabilities of a xanthene dye. Rose Bengal (RB) a compound primarily used as a stain to diagnose damaged tissue in the eye was utilized under visible light excit

Ingested Nitrate, Disinfection By-products, and Kidney Cancer Risk in Older Women.

BACKGROUND: N-nitroso compounds formed endogenously after nitrate/nitrite ingestion are animal renal carcinogens. Previous epidemiologic studies of drinking water nitrate did not evaluate other potentially toxic water contaminants, including the suspected renal carcinogen chloroform. METHODS: In a cohort of postmenopausal women in Iowa (1986-2010), we used historical measurements to estimate long-term average concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and disinfection by-products (DBP) in public water supplies. Characteristics of disinfection byproducts from dissolved organic matter during chlor(am)ination of source water in Tibetan Plateau, China.

The Tibetan Plateau, a typical high-altitude area, is less affected by human activities such as industrial development, and the external pollution to water sources is extremely low. Then it is also an important source of water samples for exploring the molecular characteristics of precursors in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. Research data on DBPs in drinking water on the Tibet Plateau remains insufficient, leading to uncertainty about DBP contamination in the area. This study explores the formation potential of 35 typical DBPs, including

Purge and trap method for determination of volatile halocarbons and carbon disulfide in table-ready foods.

A method developed for the determination of ethylene dibromide in table-ready foods has been modified and expanded to include 7 other volatile halocarbons and carbon disulfide. Samples are stirred with water and purged with nitrogen for 0.5 h in a water bath at 100 degrees C. The analytes collected on a duplex trap composed of Tenax TA and XAD-4 resin are eluted with hexane and determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detection or Hall electrolytic conductivity detection. Flame photometric detection in the sulfur mode is used to determine carbon disulfide. Thick-film, wide-bore c

Low-level N-nitrosamine occurrence in disinfected drinking water and relationships with standard water quality indicators.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a probable human carcinogen that can be formed in drinking water treatment systems as a byproduct of chloramination and chlorination. Occurrence of NDMA and other N-nitrosamines in the United States has been previously assessed using a variety of techniques, but few studies have been able to distinguish between concentrations above and below suggested screening levels (e.g., 0.7 ng L-1 for NDMA). This study evaluated the presence of NDMA and seven other N-nitrosamines in two drinking water distribution systems in the northeastern United States (n = 42 locations

In vitro screening of dihalomethanes as potential methane inhibitors in dairy cows.

Volatile halogenated compounds are known to possess antimethanogenic properties with most in vivo studies focusing on trihalomethanes. However, concerns can be raised in relation to the use of these compounds as feed additives due to the transfer of halogenated metabolites into milk, which may pose a threat to consumer health. Hence, the objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the CH4-mitigating potential of 5 dihalomethanes (DHM) to potentially reduce the transfer of halogenated compounds when used as feed additives in the future. The DHM, dibromomethane (BM), bromoiodomethane (BI
