Efficiency and usability of a modified pegboard incorporating computerized technology for upper limb rehabilitation in patients with stroke.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, a pegboard has been commonly used as a useful training and assessment tool for patients with stroke. However, training using pegboards could be monotonous and may discourage motivation in patients with stroke, as it requires only repetitive movements without feedback. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to demonstrate the efficiency and usability of a novel rehabilitation instrument (Rapael Smart Pegboard; SP), which integrates computerized technology into a traditional pegboard. METHODS: This single-center study with a single-group pre-post design included 19 patients with hemip

The effects of a mandatory play break on subsequent gambling among Norwegian video lottery terminal players.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Responsible gambling (RG) tools and initiatives have been introduced by social RG operators as a means to help prevent problem gambling. One such initiative is the use of mandatory play breaks (i.e., forced session terminations). Recommendations by RG experts for gambling operators to implement mandatory play breaks appear to be intuitively sensible but are not evidence-based. METHODS: The present authors were given access by the Norwegian gambling operator Norsk Tipping to data from 7,190 video lottery terminal (VLT) players who gambled between January and March 2018. Th

Evaluation of the Perceptual Characteristics of a Force Induced by Asymmetric Vibrations.

This paper describes the perceptual characteristics of a sense of a force induced by asymmetric vibration using a vibration speaker-type non-grounded haptic interface. We confirm that the vibration speaker generates a perceived force that pulls or pushes a user's hand in a particular direction when an asymmetric amplitude signal that is generated by inverting a part of a sine wave is input. In this paper, to verify the system with respect to various factors of force perception caused by asymmetric vibration, we conducted six experiments and the following results were obtained. (1) The force ve

Development of a clinical applicable graphical user interface to automatically detect exercise oscillatory ventilation: The VOdEX-tool.

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) gained importance in the prognostic assessment of especially patients with heart failure (HF). A meaningful prognostic parameter for early mortality in HF is exercise oscillatory ventilation (EOV). This abnormal respiratory pattern is recognized by hypo- and hyperventilation during CPET. Up until now, assessment of EOV is mainly done upon visual agreement or manual calculation. The purpose of this research was to automate the interpretation of EOV so this prognostic parameter could be readily investigated during CPET. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pr

Resistopalatography as an assistive technology for users with spinal cord injuries.

Translating a desired user's input using conventional methods such as a keyboard and mouse for the computer, or a joystick for a wheelchair is a major challenge faced by users whom have no limb control. This paper describes an iteration of Resistopalatography, a method using the tongue as a pointing device to emulate the use of the hand for cursor movement and wheelchair control. The system employs force sensitive sensors located within the mouth on a dental retainer plate to measure the tongue's pressure against the hard palate. The position and force of tongue against the sensors can be tran

Evaluating the effects of machine pre-annotation and an interactive annotation interface on manual de-identification of clinical text.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Safe Harbor method requires removal of 18 types of protected health information (PHI) from clinical documents to be considered "de-identified" prior to use for research purposes. Human review of PHI elements from a large corpus of clinical documents can be tedious and error-prone. Indeed, multiple annotators may be required to consistently redact information that represents each PHI class. Automated de-identification has the potential to improve annotation quality and reduce annotation time. For instance, using machine-assisted an

Providing access to risk prediction tools via the HL7 XML-formatted risk web service.

Cancer risk prediction tools provide valuable information to clinicians but remain computationally challenging. Many clinics find that CaGene or HughesRiskApps fit their needs for easy- and ready-to-use software to obtain cancer risks; however, these resources may not fit all clinics' needs. The HughesRiskApps Group and BayesMendel Lab therefore developed a web service, called "Risk Service", which may be integrated into any client software to quickly obtain standardized and up-to-date risk predictions for BayesMendel tools (BRCAPRO, MMRpro, PancPRO, and MelaPRO), the Tyrer-Cuzick IBIS Breast

Behavioral dynamics and influence in networked coloring and consensus.

We report on human-subject experiments on the problems of coloring (a social differentiation task) and consensus (a social agreement task) in a networked setting. Both tasks can be viewed as coordination games, and despite their cognitive similarity, we find that within a parameterized family of social networks, network structure elicits opposing behavioral effects in the two problems, with increased long-distance connectivity making consensus easier for subjects and coloring harder. We investigate the influence that subjects have on their network neighbors and the collective outcome, and find

Brain-computer interface technology as a tool to augment plasticity and outcomes for neurological rehabilitation.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are a rehabilitation tool for tetraplegic patients that aim to improve quality of life by augmenting communication, control of the environment, and self-care. The neurobiology of both rehabilitation and BCI control depends upon learning to modify the efficacy of spared neural ensembles that represent movement, sensation and cognition through progressive practice with feedback and reward. To serve patients, BCI systems must become safe, reliable, cosmetically acceptable, quickly mastered with minimal ongoing technical support, and highly accurate even in the fac

The Unity Playback System: A tool for visualizing behavioral data in 3D Unity virtual environments.

The use of virtual environments, display technology, and eye tracking in behavioral studies has become more widespread in recent years as a result of drops in hardware cost and improvements in hardware mobility. Some studies of human behavior are conducted in 3D virtual environments created using tools such as the Unity game engine and open-source Unity Experiment Framework. However, the raw data from eye trackers, motion capture systems, and input devices (e.g., computer mouse, game controller, steering wheel/foot pedal system) are often noisy and difficult to validate and interpret without v

Design and implementation of a web-based platform for biodiversity valorization data management: from process modeling to user-centred evaluation.

Research aimed to valorize biodiversity, such as studies based on phytochemical characterization and bioactivity assessment, produces wide and heterogeneous datasets in which data collection is often non-standardized. This paper presents the design and implementation of a web-based plant metabolite database platform specifically developed to support biodiversity valorization research within the activities of the National Biodiversity Future Center, with a focus on the analysis of the Italian flora. The platform was designed to manage plant species, biological samples, experimental metabolites,

FerroLigandDB: A Ferroptosis Ligand Database of Structure-Activity Relations.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent programmed cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation that is linked to the pathophysiological processes in many diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancers, ischemia-reperfusion injuries, and organ damages. Many proteins are associated with ferroptosis signal transduction pathways. Novel chemical compounds are demanded to explore and regulate these pathways. Therefore, a ferroptosis ligand database, which holds relations among chemical structures, targets, bioactivities, and diseases, is needed for discovering and designing new ferroptosis regula

A Residual Movement Classification Based User Interface for Control of Assistive Devices by Persons With Complete Tetraplegia.

OBJECTIVE: Complete tetraplegia can deprive a person of hand function. Assistive technologies may improve autonomy but needs for ergonomic interfaces for the user to pilot these devices still persist. Despite the paralysis of their arms, people with tetraplegia may retain residual shoulder movements. In this work we explored these movements as a mean to control assistive devices. METHODS: We captured shoulder movement with a single inertial sensor and, by training a support vector machine based classifier, we decode such information into user intent. RESULTS: The setup and training process t
