Mapping callosal morphology and cognitive correlates: effects of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of the corpus callosum (CC) have been documented in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), ranging from subtle decrements in its size to partial and even complete agenesis. Prenatal exposure to alcohol is also known to result in neurocognitive deficits. OBJECTIVE: To 1) investigate abnormalities in size, shape, and location of the CC within the brain in individuals with FAS and in those exposed to high amounts of alcohol prenatally but without FAS (PEA group); and 2) determine if there is a relationship between callosal dysmorphology and cognitive test performance. METHODS:

Memory deficits in a demented patient with probable corticobasal degeneration.

Anterograde and retrograde amnesia in a patient with probable corticobasal degeneration (pCBD) and dementia were studied in a university medical center setting. The patient with pCBD and four comparison patients of comparable global mental status (Mini-Mental State Exam) who met NINCDS-ADRDA criteria for Alzheimer's disease (AD) were included. Standard neuropsychological tests of naming, intelligence, achievement, verbal fluency, anterograde and remote verbal and visuospatial memory, and motor skill learning were given. The pCBD patient exhibited a progressive asymmetric akinetic-rigid syndrom

"If Their Face Starts Turning Purple, You Are Probably Doing Something Wrong": Young Men's Experiences with Choking During Sex.

Choking/strangulation during sex has become prevalent in the United States. Yet, no qualitative research has addressed men's choking experiences. Through interviews with 21 young adult men, we examined the language men use to refer to choking, how they first learned about it, their experiences with choking, and consent and safety practices. Men learned about choking during adolescence from pornography, partners, friends, and mainstream media. They engaged in choking to be kinky, adventurous, and to please partners. While many enjoyed or felt neutral about choking, others were reluctant to chok

Facilitating communication skills in adult apraxics: application of Blissymbols in a group setting.

This report describes the use of Blissymbols over a period of 8 mo with four adult aphasic patients who also exhibit severe verbal apraxia. The areas investigated include the patients' ability to use Blissymbols as a facilitating technique for communication, the capacity for learning Blissymbols, attitudes toward the use of Blissymbols, and the ability to learn Blissymbols in a group setting. Our results indicate that candidates with good auditory comprehension, good visual-perceptual skills, and a high level of motivation are more successful in using Blissymbols as a facilitating technique. Learning proficiency on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in people with serious mental illness: what are the cognitive characteristics of good learners?

Although it is widely accepted that schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses (SMI) are associated with neurocognitive difficulties, there is great variability in neurocognitive functioning across individuals. In recent years, a growing number of schizophrenia studies have utilized the concept of learning potential to explore individual variation in cognition. Learning potential refers to the ability to benefit from instruction and is measured by assessing test performance before and after training. The present study was intended to explore the cognitive characteristics associated with

Teaching complex verbal operants to children with autism and establishing generalization using the peak curriculum.

The present study evaluated the feasibility of the PEAK Relational Training System's Generalization Module (Dixon, 2014b) to teach and establish generalization of autoclitic mands, distorted tacts, and creative path finding in three children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Using a multiple-baseline design across behaviors, each participant was provided with differential reinforcement and a least-to-most prompting hierarchy for correct responses to a subset of stimuli, and responses to other similar stimulus sets were probed for emergent generalization. Following training, each partici

Reading lexically without semantics: evidence from patients with probable Alzheimer's disease.

Recent modifications of the lexical model of oral reading make the prediction that under conditions where sublexical reading processes alone cannot achieve the target pronunciation (i.e., when words have exceptional spellings or when sublexical processes are impaired), patients with severe semantic impairment should have more difficulty reading aloud semantically impaired words than semantically retained words. In a battery of lexical-semantic and reading tasks, two neurologically normal control subjects and two subjects with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and only moderate semantic impairm

A comparison of neurocognitive impairment in younger and older adults with major depression.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive impairment is a well-recognized feature of depression that has been reported in younger and older adults. Similar deficits occur with ageing and it is unclear whether the greater deficits in late-life depression are an ageing-related phenomenon or due to a difference in the nature of late-life depression itself. We hypothesized that ageing alone would not fully explain the increased neurocognitive impairment in late-life depression but that differences in the illness explain the greater decrements in memory and executive function. METHOD: Comparison of the neuropsyc

Implicit and explicit memory functioning in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is associated with widespread and devastating neurodevelopmental deficits. Numerous reports have suggested memory deficits in both humans and animals exposed prenatally to alcohol. However, the nature of these memory deficits remains to be characterized. Recently children with fetal alcohol syndrome were shown to have learning and memory deficits on a verbal learning and memory measure that involved free recall and recognition memory. The current study seeks to further characterize memory functioning in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure by evaluating primi

Self-assessed memory problems in everyday life in relation to assessed cognitive domains in neuropsychological tests: A longitudinal study of adult patients with acquired brain injury.

Few long-term studies exist regarding memory problems following acquired brain injury and a minimal amount is known regarding the relationship between self-reported memory difficulties and objective neuropsychological measures. This knowledge gap may affect planning of effective rehabilitation interventions. Self-reported memory problems in everyday life and performance on neuropsychological tests were examined in a longitudinal study. Thirty-nine patients with acquired brain injury were recruited from a rehabilitation unit and assessed at one, two, and ten years post-injury using Everyday Mem

Cognitive impairment associated with Hodgkin's lymphoma and chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a well-documented side effect of cancer treatment in various types of tumors including Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). However, a longitudinal study evaluating the cognitive performance of HL patients has been completely lacking. The aim of the study was to determine the presence of CRCI in HL patients before, promptly after, and 6 months after treatment. Thirty-six patients newly diagnosed with HL and 45 healthy controls (HC) completed the neuropsychological battery and psychological measures of affective distress and quality of life. The results i

Relations between visual and auditory continuous performance tests in a clinical population: a descriptive study.

Increased interest in auditory continuous performance tests (CPTs) exists despite the absence of a clear understanding about this procedure. The relation between auditory and visual CPTs and associations with IQ, achievement, and memory are evaluated in a referred sample of 634 children, ages 5.5 to 17.9. Age effects are found with CPT performance, regardless of modality. Total number correct or number of commissions correlations across tasks were greater than within-task number correct-number of commissions relations. The mean visual minus auditory correct difference score was 7.01; the mean

L-deprenyl therapy improves verbal memory in amnesic Alzheimer patients.

Altered monoaminergic neurotransmission could play an important role in the cognitive dysfunctions typical of dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT). DAT is not, however, a homogenous phenomenon inasmuch as two forms are distinguishable: early onset (EO) and late onset (LO). Moreover, focal patterns of neuropsychological deterioration fall into various subgroups. According to our hypothesis, DAT patients, who at the onset of the disease mainly manifest memory disorders, also represent a specific subgroup characterized by impaired cortically projecting catecholaminergic pathways. In a 6-month ran

Long-term psychological effects of childhood leukemia and its treatment.

We report the results of a 5-year follow-up of the cognitive development of 19 survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, all of whom received 24 Gy cranial irradiation and a course of intrathecal methotrexate. Assessment was made before radiotherapy and annually thereafter. Cognitive impairment was found to be transient in children who did not manifest somnolence who were under 5 years at the time of treatment. Despite having normal IQs and normal CT scans, 9 of 18 survivors in continuous complete remission were having learning problems at school 5 years after diagnosis. Assessment of their i
