To see, or not to see… pathogens in virtual reality hand hygiene training.

BACKGROUND: ViRTUE, a virtual reality (VR) hand hygiene trainer, offers users the option of visualizing pathogen transfers during virtual patient care either in "real-time" or at the end of a level as a "summary" visualization. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of different timings of pathogen visualization ("real-time" vs "summary") on in-trainer performance and user's immersion. METHODS: The study included first-year medical students undergoing hand hygiene training with ViRTUE, randomized to one of three visualization set-ups: set-up 1 ("on-off-off", with "real-time" visualiza

Framework for Microdosing Odors in Virtual Reality for Psychophysiological Stress Training.

To better cope with stress in emergencies, emergency personnel undergo virtual reality (VR) stress training. Such training typically includes visual, auditory and sometimes tactile impressions, whereas olfactory stimuli are mostly neglected. This concept paper therefore examines whether odors might be beneficial for further enhancing the experience of presence and immersion into a simulated environment. The aim is to demonstrate the benefits of VR civilian stress training for emergency personnel and to investigate the role of odors as stressors by manipulating the degree of perceived psychophy

The Effects of Auditory, Visual, and Cognitive Distractions on Cybersickness in Virtual Reality.

Cybersickness (CS) is one of the challenges that has hindered the widespread adoption of Virtual Reality (VR). Consequently, researchers continue to explore novel means to mitigate the undesirable effects associated with this affliction, one that may require a combination of remedies as opposed to a solitary stratagem. Inspired by research probing into the use of distractions as a means to control pain, we investigated the efficacy of this countermeasure against CS, studying how the introduction of temporally time-gated distractions affects this malady during a virtual experience featuring act

Using virtual reality simulation to address racism in a healthcare setting.

Racism continues to plague Western societies' institutions, including the healthcare system. Despite the evidence of racism's negative impacts on healthcare providers, administrators, patients, and families, healthcare workers report hesitancy in taking action to address racism in the workplace. Simulation, with its experiential pedagogy and foundation in psychological safety, may be an educational tool to support practical training. Guided by a social cognitive view of regulation of learning, we piloted virtual reality (VR) modules focused on addressing bias, privilege, and microaggressions.

Development of a Virtual Reality Tool for the Treatment of Pediatric Patients in the ICU.

Prolonged stays in the intensive care unit (ICU) cause difficulties in rehabilitation and other disorders for patients. This problem is exacerbated in the case of pediatric patients. The use of virtual reality can help with the lack of external stimuli and contribute as potential nonpharmacological therapies in some patient rehabilitation processes. To this end, we have developed a virtual reality application for use in the pediatric ICU as a tool for the treatment and rehabilitation of delirium. The tool consists of two applications: an immersive environment for a virtual reality headset used

Virtual reality videos for training and protocol dissemination during a pandemic.

This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. Preparations for the COVID-19 pandemic required healthcare teams to practice known skills, such as intubation, with renewed consideration for safety, as well as develop new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for health care delivery. In these conditions, translational simulation based-education (SBE) is a well-known tool that supports health care teams to improve the system using design thinking methods such as walkthroughs and team-based simulation. However, the pandemic has introduced two stressors on translational SBE simul

Applications of virtual reality in individuals with alcohol misuse: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use and misuse have been intensively studied, due to their negative consequences in the general population. Evidence-based literature emphasizes that alcohol craving plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of alcohol-drinking patterns. Many individuals develop Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD); significantly, after treatment many also experience relapses, in which alcohol craving has been repeatedly implicated. Cue-exposure therapy (CET) has been widely used in the treatment of alcohol misuse, but the results are inconsistent. Virtual reality (VR) can add effectiv

Influence of bone-conducted vibration on simulator sickness in virtual reality.

Use of virtual reality (VR) technology is often accompanied by a series of unwanted symptoms, including nausea and headache, which are characterised as 'simulator sickness'. Sensory mismatch has been thought to lie at the heart of the problem and recent studies have shown that reducing cue mismatch in VR can have a therapeutic effect. Specifically, electrical stimulation of vestibular afferent nerves (galvanic vestibular stimulation; GVS) can reduce simulator sickness in VR. However, GVS poses a risk to certain populations and can also result in negative symptoms in normal, healthy individuals

Modulation of Excitability in the Temporoparietal Junction Relieves Virtual Reality Sickness.

Virtual reality (VR) immersion often provokes subjective discomfort and postural instability, so called VR sickness. The neural mechanism of VR sickness is speculated to be related to visual-vestibular information mismatch and/or postural instability. However, the approaches proposed to relieve VR sickness through modulation of brain activity are poorly understood. Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), we aimed to investigate whether VR sickness could be relieved by the modulation of cortical excitability in the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), which is known to be involved in p
