The antilymphatic metastatic effect of hyaluronic acid in a mouse model of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Objectives: Lymphatic metastasis is the main cause of low patient survival in cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Several animal models have been established to uncover the mechanism that regulates lymph node metastasis of OSCC cells. Unfortunately, these models often take a long time to establish. The prolonged tumor burden can lead to animal cachexia, which may ultimately affect the experimental outcome. To overcome the disadvantages of these models, we established an orthotopic metastatic animal model of OSCC that showed quick lymph node metastasis potential. Results: DiR dye-label

Differential characteristics and management of pseudoseptic arthritis following hyaluronic acid injection is a rare complication: a systematic review.

IMPORTANCE: Acute pseudoseptic arthritis is a rare complication of hyaluronic acid (HA) injections that is not well documented in the literature. Practitioners initially suspect the symptoms of this complication to represent septic arthritis, cautiously prescribing antibiotics. This review identifies that time to presentation of symptoms postinjection, negative cell cultures and lack of crystallisation could be used as differentials to suspect pseudoseptic arthritis and to prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs while closely monitoring change of symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was t

Clinical outcomes are associated with changes in ultrasonographic structural appearance after platelet-rich plasma treatment for knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid (HA) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are two treatment options used for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) but studies comparing the efficacy of the two yield conflicting results. In addition, the association of clinical outcomes of PRP intra-articular injections with changes in the ultrasonography structural appearance of the knee has not been investigated. AIM: To compare the efficacy of PRP and HA intra-articular injections as mono-therapeutic options for primary KOA, and to determine whether the clinical outcomes are associated with changes in the ultrasonography structu

Assessment of knee function and biochemical parameters of articular fluid and peripheral blood in gonarthrosis patients following intra-articular administration of hyaluronic acid.

BACKGROUND: The development of gonarthrosis (GA) involves inflammatory processes; the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is being increasingly mentioned. The body is protected from oxidative damage by the antioxidative barrier with fundamental role being played by antioxidative enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and enzymes involved in glutathione transformations, particularly glutathione peroxidase (GPx). The methods of treatment of cartilage depend on the disease advancement, patient's reactions to pain, disease-related impairment in daily activities, as well as t

Effectiveness of Sequential Viscosupplementation in Temporomandibular Joint Internal Derangements and Symptomatology: A Case Series.

Viscosupplementation is a minimally invasive technique that replaces synovial fluid by intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA). Although effective in some joints, there is not conclusive evidence regarding temporomandibular disorders. This case series described the efficacy of a viscosupplementation protocol in intra-articular temporomandibular disorders. Ten patients with a diagnosis of disc displacement and/or osteoarthritis by Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) were submitted to four monthly injections of low or medium molecular weight HA. Pain,

Non-surgical treatments for the management of early osteoarthritis.

Non-surgical treatments are usually the first choice for the management of knee degeneration, especially in the early osteoarthritis (OA) phase when no clear lesions or combined abnormalities need to be addressed surgically. Early OA may be addressed by a wide range of non-surgical approaches, from non-pharmacological modalities to dietary supplements and pharmacological therapies, as well as physical therapies and novel biological minimally invasive procedures involving injections of various substances to obtain a clinical improvement and possibly a disease-modifying effect. Chondroprotective effects of high-molecular-weight cross-linked hyaluronic acid in a rabbit knee osteoarthritis model.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that high-molecular-weight (MW) cross-linked (CL) hyaluronic acid (HA) improves joint lubrication and has an enhanced chondroprotective effect. We examined the histopathological changes and friction coefficients in osteoarthritic knee joints after injecting high-MW CL HA. DESIGN: A bilateral anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) model in 20 Japanese white rabbits was used. From week 5 after transection, low-MW HA (0.8 × 10(6) Da; HA80) or high-MW CL HA (6 × 10(6) Da; HA600) was injected weekly into 10 right knee for 3 weeks; normal saline (NS) was injected

Effectiveness of subacromial anti-adhesive agent injection after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: prospective randomized comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair generally has a good clinical outcome but shoulder stiffness after surgery due to subacromial adhesion is one of the most common and clinically important complications. Sodium hyaluronate (HA) has been reported to be an anti-adhesive agent in a range of surgical procedures. However, there are few reports of the outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair of the shoulder. This study examined whether a subacromial injection of HA/carboxymethylated cellulose (CMC) affected the postoperative shoulder stiffness and healing of rotator cuff repair, as wel

Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation for Painful Knee Arthritis: The Why and the How.

BACKGROUND: Genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation (GNRFA), including conventional, cooled, and pulsed techniques, has been used in the management of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA). This new and innovative treatment option has the capacity to decrease pain and improve function and quality of life in certain patients. GNRFA is reserved for patients with symptomatic knee OA who have had failure of conservative treatment and have had failure of or are poor candidates for surgery. GNRFA has been shown to consistently provide short-term (3 to 6-month), and sometimes longer, pain relief in pa
