Short-term effects of a speech feminization program for transgender women: listener perceptions, self-perception and satisfaction of the voice.

Purpose: This study measured and compared the short-term impact of pitch elevation training (PET) and articulation-resonance training (ART) in transgender women, on self-perception, satisfaction and masculinity-femininity perceptions of listeners. Methods: A randomized controlled study with cross-over design was used. Thirty transgender women were included and received fourteen weeks of speech training. All participants started with sham training (four weeks), after which they were randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group continued with PET (five weeks), followed by ART (five weeks),

Dysphonia Outperforms Voice Change as a Clinical Predictor of Dysphagia.

PURPOSE: Changes in voice quality after consuming food or drink have been used as a clinical indicator of dysphagia during the clinical swallowing evaluation (CSE); however, there is conflicting evidence of its efficacy. This study investigated if dysphonia and/or voice change after swallowing are valid predictors of penetration, aspiration, or pharyngeal residue. Our approach aimed to improve current methodologies by collecting voice samples in the fluoroscopy suite, implementing rater training to improve interrater reliability and utilizing continuous measurement scales, allowing for regress

'It's like having a core belief that's able to speak back to you': Therapist accounts of dialoguing with auditory hallucinations.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical perspectives and experiences of therapists when engaging in direct dialogue with auditory hallucinations. METHOD: Therapist accounts were explored via a qualitative study nested within a pilot randomized controlled trial of a novel intervention for supporting distressed voice-hearers (Talking with Voices). Five therapists were involved, none of whom had substantive previous experience of the technique. All agreed to take part in two semi-structured, in-depth interviews which were arranged prior to delivering therapy and again after therapists had experienc

A systematic review of the voice-tagging hypothesis of speech-in-noise perception.

The voice-tagging hypothesis claims that individuals who better represent pitch information in a speaker's voice, as measured with the frequency following response (FFR), will be better at speech-in-noise perception. The hypothesis has been provided to explain how music training might improve speech-in-noise perception. This paper reviews studies that are relevant to the voice-tagging hypothesis, including studies on musicians and nonmusicians. Most studies on musicians show greater f0 amplitude compared to controls. Most studies on nonmusicians do not show group differences in f0 amplitude. A

The role of social schema in the experience of auditory hallucinations: a systematic review and a proposal for the inclusion of social schema in a cognitive behavioural model of voice hearing.

UNLABELLED: The interpersonal nature of the voice-hearing experience has been highlighted in recent studies investigating whether social processes (or 'schemas') that guide interpersonal interactions also govern the relationship between voice hearer and voice. A systematic literature review of relevant studies was undertaken, including those that investigated how social processes interact with appraisals of voices, as well as affective and behavioural responding to voices. The review included 13 studies published between 2000 and 2010. Two well-replicated findings emerged from the review. Firs

Methods of surgical treatment of bilateral vocal fold paralysis.

Bilateral vocal fold paralysis presents as their complete or partial immobilisation. The median or paramedian position of vocal folds contributes to the narrowing of the airway at the level of the glottis and manifests as inspiratory dyspnoea. For many years iatrogenic injury of recurrent laryngeal nerves during thyroidectomy has been viewed as the most common underlying reason. It is very often a lifethreatening condition requiring not only corticosteroid administration and intubation, which only constitute a short-term symptomatic therapy, but also surgical intervention, including tracheosto

Massed Versus Spaced Practice in Vocology: Effect of a Short-Term Intensive Voice Therapy Versus a Long-Term Traditional Voice Therapy.

Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the effect of a short-term intensive voice therapy (IVT) with a long-term traditional voice therapy (TVT) on the vocal quality, vocal capacities, psychosocial impact, vocal tract discomfort, laryngological anatomy/physiology, and session attendance of patients with dysphonia. An additional comparison was made between an individual IVT (IVT-I) and a group IVT (IVT-G). Method A longitudinal, prospective controlled trial was used. Forty-six adults diagnosed with dysphonia were assigned to 1 of the 3 treatment groups. The IVT groups practiced with a fre

[Application of acoustic analysis of the voice to diagnosis and treatment of functional dysphonia].

Acoustic analysis of the voice was used to facilitate diagnosis and to objectively evaluate results of the treatment of psychogenic dysphonia (PD) in 20 women. The control group comprised 20 women showing no signs of laryngeal pathology. The following parameters were measure: jitter, shimmer, signal to noise ratio, and response in the voicing test. Other methods applied included laryngoscopy, videolaryngoscopy, and laryngostroboscopy. It was shown that hoarseness in patients with PD results from the disturbances of mechanisms controlling stability of phonation. This observation is confirmed by

Effects of intensive voice treatment (the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment [LSVT]) on ataxic dysarthria: a case study.

This study examined the effects of intensive voice treatment (the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment [LSVT]) on ataxic dysarthria in a woman with cerebellar dysfunction secondary to thiamine deficiency. Perceptual and acoustic measures were made on speech samples recorded just before the LSVT program was administered, immediately after it was administered, and at 9 months follow-up. Results indicate short- and long-term improvement in phonatory and articulatory functions, speech intelligibility, and overall communication and job-related activity following LSVT. This study's findings provide initial

Hidden respiratory allergies in voice users: treatment strategies.

The treatment of the allergic voice patient may be somewhat different than other voice patients. Antihistamines are generally avoided, though decongestants with Guaifenesin may be useful. Steroids are more useful in perennial allergic systems. Steroids may be inhaled nasally, inhaled orally, or given systemically. Systemic steroids are especially useful for a performer who needs quick relief. We strongly feel that vocalists with chronic laryngitis and dysphonia should be allergy tested. A hidden dust mite or cat dander allergy is often found. A clean indoor environment can then be established.

Pitch change in male-to-female transsexuals: has phonosurgery a role to play?

Male-to-female transsexuals, who have undergone gender reassignment surgery, may continue to have low pitched voices. Voice therapy may assist them to use their voice in a manner more likely to be perceived as female but, if this approach is unsuccessful, a laryngeal framework operation may be necessary to raise vocal pitch. This study assessed the effects of crico-thyroid approximation surgery in 14 transsexuals. Modal pitch was significantly increased by surgery but with substantial variation across speakers. Modal pitch was significantly correlated with judgements of gender by speech and la

Ventricular dysphonia following long-term endotracheal intubation: a case study.

Although dysphonia following long-term endotracheal intubation (EI) is a common complication, no cases of ventricular dysphonia have been reported. This investigation reports a case of persistent ventricular dysphonia following a 12-day intubation period. The patient received eight sessions of voice therapy employing the manual, laryngeal musculoskeletal tension reduction procedure. Improvements in perceptual, acoustic, and videolaryngoendoscopic measures of voice production are reported. Mechanisms contributing to the development, maintenance, and resolution of ventricular dysphonia are discu

Speech and voice rehabilitation in selected patients fitted with a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA).

With the Birmingham osseointegrated implant programme there have been several patients with severe pre-lingual conductive hearing loss. The majority of these have been patients with Treacher Collins syndrome. There are characteristic features of speech and voice in those with long-standing conductive hearing loss. In addition, the associated abnormalities of jaw, teeth and palate may amplify the problem. There may be spontaneous improvement in features such as voice pitch, quality and intensity following the fitting of a BAHA. However, in those with a pre-lingual hearing impairment, speech the

The implantation of a voice prosthesis has become a standard procedure during a laryngectomy. A voice prostheses enables patients to develop speech shortly after surgery, which strongly improves rehabilitation and quality of life. The lifetime of a voice prosthesis is limited and highly variable due to different causes. A replacement is usually necessary several times a year and can easily been done in an outpatient setting with surface anesthesia. In some cases, replacing the prosthesis becomes difficult. This article will take a closer look at different reasons that can lead to difficulties i
