Posterior cortical atrophy: reorganization of the dorsal attention network and its implications on volume loss and clinical performance.

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is associated with visual attention, episodic memory, and working memory deficits, in addition to the typical visual dysfunction. The dorsal attention network (DAN) plays a critical role in modulating these functions. However, little is known about the relationship of DAN with other core networks (visual and default mode networks (DMN)) and its relationships to volume loss and memory function in PCA. Fifty-seven PCA patients were compared to 60 cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals. Within-network connectivity was calculated within the frontal eye field (FEF)

Virtual Reality in Training of Sustained Attention, Processing Speed, and Working Memory After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of playing a commercially available virtual reality (VR)-game on sustained attention as primary outcome, and processing speed and working memory as secondary outcomes, after traumatic brain injury (TBI). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The study was a parallel-group randomized controlled trial with 1:1 allocation to VR training or an active control condition. One hundred participants aged 18-65 years with complicated mild-to-severe TBI and consequently impaired sustained attention, processing speed, and/or working memory were enrolled. Part

Evaluation of memory impairment in aging adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated with cranial radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cranial radiotherapy (CRT) is a known risk factor for neurocognitive impairment in survivors of childhood cancer and may increase risk for mild cognitive impairment and dementia in adulthood. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional evaluation of survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treated with 18 Gy (n = 127) or 24 Gy (n = 138) CRT. Impairment (age-adjusted score >1 standard deviation below expected mean, two-sided exact binomial test) on the Wechsler Memory Scale IV (WMS-IV) was measured. A subset of survivors (n = 85) completed structural and functional neu

Decreased awareness of cognitive decline is associated with multimodal Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in cognitively unimpaired individuals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnostic guidelines emphasize subjective cognitive decline (SCD) preceding mild cognitive impairment (MCI), implicitly assuming awareness of cognitive decline (ACD) is preserved in preclinical AD. This study aimed to characterize a discrete clinical profile consistent with subtle amnestic anosognosia: decreased ACD, evaluating its association with multimodal core AD biomarkers in cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals. We analyzed data from CU individuals with baseline CSF biomarkers and 3-year longitudinal neuropsychological assessment (ALFA+ cohort). Decreased ACD

Cognitive training in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome: A pilot randomized trial.

Neurodevelopmental disabilities are common sequelae of congenital heart disease, particularly cognitive impairments that impede academic achievement. Cognitive training has been shown to be effective in improving working memory in other patient groups. Computerized cognitive training programs may hold potential for children and adolescents with congenital heart disease, but are untested in this population. In this single-center, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial, the feasibility and efficacy of Cogmed Working Memory Training (Cogmed) was compared with observation in children with hyp

Serial position effects in the Logical Memory Test: Loss of primacy predicts amyloid positivity.

BACKGROUND: Story recall is a frequently used neuropsychological test of episodic memory with clinical populations and for screening participants in drug trials for Alzheimer's disease. However, it is unclear at this stage which underlying mechanisms confer the test its sensitivity. In this paper, we examined serial position effects, that is, better recall for items learned early and late on a list, in story recall, and their usefulness to predict early changes associated with neurodegenerative markers. METHODS: We analysed data from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention. First, w

Differences in cerebral activation patterns in idiopathic inflammatory demyelination using the paced visual serial addition task: an fMRI study.

We performed a functional MRI (fMRI) study during the execution of the Paced Visual Serial Addition Task (PVSAT) in 9 patients with a clinically isolated syndrome suggestive of multiple sclerosis (CIS), 9 patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis (CDMS), and 18 matched healthy control subjects. In controls, the PVSAT elicited a fronto-parietal network with cerebellar activation which we expected for this kind of working memory test and which indicates that this PVSAT version is an appropriate tool for measuring functional changes during a cognitive task. Although there were no signi

The Cognitive Profile of Children with Nonsyndromic Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Long-term neuropsychological and cognitive outcomes in patients with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis have proven difficult to evaluate objectively because of methodologic problems with published studies based on their small and biased samples of patients, wide age ranges, and testing with unacceptable psychometric properties. This study evaluated the Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient and its subscales in a cohort with a small selection bias. METHODS: Patients aged 7 to 16 years, born with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis and surgically treated, were tested using the Wechsler Intelligenc

PON1 DNA methylation and neurobehavior in Mexican-American children with prenatal organophosphate exposure.

PON1 is a multifunctional enzyme involved in oxidative stress and detoxification of some organophosphate (OP) pesticides. It has been associated with nervous system diseases like Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and autism. We previously found that PON1 susceptible genotypes were associated with lower IQ scores in children. Epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, can regulate gene expression. Yet, data on whether DNA methylation may influence the relationship between PON1 levels and neurobehavior are limited. In this study, we used Illumina 450K and E

Is insomnia associated with deficits in neuropsychological functioning? Evidence from a population-based study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: People with insomnia complain of cognitive deficits in daily life. Results from empirical studies examining associations between insomnia and cognitive impairment, however, are mixed. Research is needed that compares treatment-seeking and community-based insomnia study samples, measures subjective as well as objective cognitive functioning, and considers participants' pre-insomnia cognitive function. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: We used data from the Dunedin Study, a representative birth cohort of 1,037 individuals, to examine whether insomnia in early midlife was associated wit

Fluid Intelligence in Children with Learning Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Fluid intelligence is an integral cognitive ability that involves solving new non-standard problems. It strongly predicts academic and professional achievement, whereas a low level of fluid intelligence is an important predictor of learning problems. Clinical studies of fluid intelligence are of interest for the development of training programs in various groups of children with special needs. This article presents a study on fluid intelligence in children with learning disabilities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate characteristics of fluid intelligence and its relations

Personality and cognition across the lifespan: investigating their interplay and age-related differences.

INTRODUCTION: Personality-cognition associations may vary across adulthood, but findings are inconsistent. The present study examined associations between personality traits and cognitive functioning within younger and older adults and explored whether these associations differed across age groups. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used. Participants were 191 adults divided into younger (N = 99; 19-49 years) and older (N = 92; 50-87 years) groups. Cognitive functioning was assessed with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV, and personality with the Swedish Universities Scales of Perso

WISC-V cognitive profiles in ADHD, SLD, and ADHD-SLD comorbidity: Overlap, dimensional associations, and limited discriminative utility.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorder (SLD), and their comorbidity are associated with weaknesses in cognitive efficiency; however, the diagnostic utility of WISC-V index patterns remains unclear. This study examined WISC-V cognitive profiles in children with newly diagnosed ADHD, SLD, ADHD-SLD comorbidity, and typically developing controls (N = 133; 6-16 years), with emphasis on Working Memory and Processing Speed. Age-controlled ANCOVAs evaluated group differences across primary and composite indices, including the General Ability Index (GAI), the Cognit

A multi-factorial perspective on ADHD and ODD in school-aged children: What is the role of cognitive regulation, temperament, and parental support?

Introduction: It is well established that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder of self-regulation. As such, ADHD is associated with disturbed cognitive regulation, extreme temperament traits, and deficient extrinsic regulation such as parenting. Despite these associations, cognitive regulation, temperament, and parenting have not previously been examined simultaneously in relation to ADHD symptoms in school-aged children. To bridge this gap of knowledge, we examined effects of these important aspects of self-regulation on symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsiv

Impairment of cognitive abilities and decision making after chronic use of alcohol: the impact of multiple detoxifications.

AIMS: In the present study, the effect of previous detoxifications on prefrontal function and decision making was examined in alcohol-dependent patients. Further, we examined whether the length of abstinence affects cognitive function. METHODS: Forty-eight alcohol-dependent patients were recruited from an inpatient detoxification treatment facility and cognitive function was compared to a control group of 36 healthy controls. The patient population was then divided into a group of patients with less than two previous detoxifications (LO-detox group, n = 27) and a group of patients with two or

Searching for the anatomical basis of retrograde amnesia.

The case of a patient with profound retrograde and minor anterograde amnesia is described and used to discuss the kind of brain damage which will most likely result in persistent retrograde amnesia as the principal symptom. The patient was an industrial manager who had fallen off a horse four years prior to the present neuropsychological and neuroradiological investigation. MRI examination revealed an injury to both temporal poles and to the latero-ventral portion of the right prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal and temporal cortical damage on the right side deeply invaded the white matter while
