Critical constraints to ecological buffering in a rapidly changing Arctic: A long-term seabird study.

Long-term ecological studies testing global change impacts are rare yet essential in the Arctic, a region warming nearly four times faster than the global average. These rapid environmental changes reshape ecosystem functioning across the pan-Arctic and affect the livelihoods of local communities. Seabirds are widely recognised indicators of environmental change. Identifying species-specific critical constraints is therefore essential for detecting early warning signals of population decline and ecosystem reorganisation. Little auks (Alle alle), the most abundant Arctic seabirds, are key ecosy

Contact micropredation may play a more important role than exotoxicity does in the lethal effects of Karlodinium australe blooms: Evidence from laboratory bioassays.

Multiple dinoflagellate species from the genus Karlodinium have been well known to form massive and toxic blooms that consequently cause fish kills in many coastal waters around the world. Karlodinium australe is a mixotrophic and potentially ichthyotoxic species associated with fish kills. Here, we investigated phagotrophy of K. australe (isolate KaJb05) established from a bloom event in the West Johor Strait, Malaysia, using several prey species (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and larval fish). The results showed that K. australe ingested relatively small prey cells of co-occurring microalgae b

Mercury speciation and total trace element determination of low-biomass biological samples.

Current approaches to mercury speciation and total trace element analysis require separate extraction/digestions of the sample. Ecologically important aquatic organisms--notably primary consumers such as zooplankton, polychaetes and amphipods--usually yield very low biomass for analysis, even with significant compositing of multiple organisms. Individual organisms in the lower aquatic food chains (mussels, snails, oysters, silversides, killifish) can also have very low sample mass, and analysis of whole single organisms is important to metal uptake studies. A method for the determination of bo

The Australian Monstrilloida 3. Caromiobenella Jeon, Lee & Soh, 2018, Monstrilla Dana, 1849, and Sarsimonstrillus n. gen.

This is the third paper in a series regarding a taxonomical survey of the monstrilloid copepods collected during the past three decades in coastal systems of Australia. The first contribution included the taxonomic analysis of three genera of the Monstrilloida, i.e., Monstrillopsis Sars, 1921, Maemonstrilla Grygier & Ohtsuka, 2008, and the monotypic Australomonstrillopsis Suárez-Morales & McKinnon, 2007. The second document contained the taxonomic analysis of Cymbasoma Thompson, 1888 which emphasized the remarkable diversity of this genus in Australia, with a total of 25 new species. In this t

Environmental parameters associated with incidence and transmission of pathogenic Vibrio spp.

Vibrio spp. thrive in warm water and moderate salinity, and they are associated with aquatic invertebrates, notably crustaceans and zooplankton. At least 12 Vibrio spp. are known to cause infection in humans, and Vibrio cholerae is well documented as the etiological agent of pandemic cholera. Pathogenic non-cholera Vibrio spp., e.g., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, cause gastroenteritis, septicemia, and other extra-intestinal infections. Incidence of vibriosis is rising globally, with evidence that anthropogenic factors, primarily emissions of carbon dioxide associated with atmo

Environmental safety review of methoprene and bacterially-derived pesticides commonly used for sustained mosquito control.

Some pesticides are applied directly to aquatic systems to reduce numbers of mosquito larvae (larvicides) and thereby reduce transmission of pathogens that mosquitoes vector to humans and wildlife. Sustained, environmentally-safe control of larval mosquitoes is particularly needed for highly productive waters (e.g., catchment basins, water treatment facilities, septic systems), but also for other habitats to maintain control and reduce inspection costs. Common biorational pesticides include the insect juvenile hormone mimic methoprene and pesticides derived from the bacteria Bacillus thuringie

Physiological responses of Daphnia pulex to acid stress.

BACKGROUND: Acidity exerts a determining influence on the composition and diversity of freshwater faunas. While the physiological implications of freshwater acidification have been intensively studied in teleost fish and crayfish, much less is known about the acid-stress physiology of ecologically important groups such as cladoceran zooplankton. This study analyzed the extracellular acid-base state and CO2 partial pressure (P(CO2)), circulation and ventilation, as well as the respiration rate of Daphnia pulex acclimated to acidic (pH 5.5 and 6.0) and circumneutral (pH 7.8) conditions. Synergistic effect of various virulence factors leading to high toxicity of environmental V. cholerae non-O1/ non-O139 isolates lacking ctx gene : comparative study with clinical strains.

BACKGROUND: Vibrio cholerae non-O1/ non-O139 serogroups have been reported to cause sporadic diarrhoea in humans. Cholera toxins have been mostly implicated for hypersecretion of ions and water into the small intestine. Though most of the V. cholerae non-O1/ non-O139 strains lack these cholera toxins, several other innate virulence factors contribute towards their pathogenicity. The environmental isolates may thus act as reservoirs for potential spreading of these virulence genes in the natural environment which may cause the emergence of epidemic-causing organisms. RESULTS: The environmental

[Impact of Ligula intestinalis (L.1758) (Cestode), on the growth of Barbus setivimensis (Cyprinidae) in a lake system in Algeria].

The Algerian freshwater fish fauna is mainly represented by the Cyprinidae family, in particular, the genus Barbus. This is represented only by natural populations of the subgenus Barbus. The systematic, based mainly on the methods of biometrics, is quite different from one author to another. However, two nominal species are usually cited: Barbus callensis (Valenciennes, 1842), which is limited to the region of El Kala (eastern Algeria) and Barbus setivimensis (Valenciennes, 1842) in other parts of the North. During the ecological study of this fauna, many individuals were found infested with

Using a Bayesian Network Model to Predict Risk of Pesticides on Aquatic Community Endpoints in a Rice Field-A Southern European Case Study.

Bayesian network (BN) models are increasingly used as tools to support probabilistic environmental risk assessments (ERAs), because they can better account for uncertainty compared with the simpler approaches commonly used in traditional ERA. We used BNs as metamodels to link various sources of information in a probabilistic framework, to predict the risk of pesticides to aquatic communities under given scenarios. The research focused on rice fields surrounding the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain), and considered three selected pesticides: acetamiprid (an insecticide), 2-methyl-4-chloro

Biological indicators in relation to coastal pollution along Karnataka coast, India.

Marine pollutants in relation to planktonic and benthic organisms were examined at two locations along Karnataka coast, one at Kulai (74 degrees 47.74''E and 12 degrees 55.16''N) receiving huge amount of industrial effluents from fertilizer, petroleum and chemical plants along with the sewage discharges. The other site Padubidri (74 degrees 45''E and 13 degrees 10''N) is located 20 km away, which is a typically agricultural and fishing village having no stress of industrial discharges. Although the concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients and trace metals in water and sediment showed

High vulnerability of jellyfish ephyras (Aurelia aurita) and copepods (Calanoids) to understudied organic UV filters: A multi-trophic ecotoxicological assessment.

Organic ultraviolet filters have become a growing concern in coastal environments, yet our understanding of their toxicity remains surprisingly uneven. While some compounds like benzophenone have been studied extensively, others that are increasingly used in sunscreens such as octisalate (EHS) and ethylhexyl triazone (EHT) have received little attention. Even less is known about how these substances affect marine species that are not part of standard toxicity testing. To address these gaps, this work combined a systematic review following the PRISMA approach with a series of acute toxicity tes

Multi-species okadaic acid contamination and human poisoning during a massive bloom of Dinophysis acuminata complex in southern Brazil.

On June 2016, a major bloom of Dinophysis acuminata complex was noticed over the coast of Paraná State (PR), southern Brazil, an area unprotected by any official monitoring program. Here we report the results of an extensive sampling effort that ultimately led PR authorities to issue the first State shellfish-harvesting ban due to multi-species okadaic acid (OA) contamination. During its peak, the bloom covered an area of 201 km2 (∼2.0-3.5 × 54.0 km), attaining unprecedentedly high cell densities along the shallow (<15 m) continental shelf (mean 2.2 × 105, maximum 2.1 × 106 cells L-1) and adja

MiR-205 determines the radioresistance of human nasopharyngeal carcinoma by directly targeting PTEN.

The freshwater copepod Salmincola californiensis is an ectoparasite of Pacific salmon and trout (Oncorhynchus spp.). High levels of infection by this parasite can significantly damage gills and result in blood loss, affecting the fitness and survival of hosts, and it may hinder recovery efforts of threatened and endangered salmonids. Juvenile salmonids that rear in reservoirs have been reported to experience higher rates of infection than their stream-dwelling counterparts. To date, the relationship between reservoir environmental conditions and infection rates remains poorly understood. Here,

Photoprotective benefits of pigmentation in the transparent plankton community: a comparative species experimental test.

Plankton live under the countervailing selective pressures of predation and ultraviolet radiation (UVR). In lakes, zooplankton are transparent reducing visibility to predatory fishes but are pigmented in the absence of fishes, hypothetically reducing UVR damage. In the sea, planktivorous fishes are widespread, so plankton typically are transparent and ascend to productive surface waters at night to forage and descend during the day to reduce visibility to predators. However, larvae of some species face the unique constraint of traveling in surface currents in the daytime during migrations betw

Effects of mercury on the life table demography of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas (Rotifera).

Mercury is highly toxic to a variety of aquatic organisms including zooplankton. The functioning of freshwater ecosystems can be altered if rotifers, being a natural food link between phytoplankton and fish larvae, are contaminated by mercuric compounds. In order to detect age-specific responses of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to mercury toxicity (5 nominal concentrations as chloride viz. 0, 0.000625, 0.00125, 0.0025 and 0.005 mg l(-1)), we used the standard life table method at two different food (Chlorella vulgaris) levels (0.5 x 10(6) and 1.5 x 10(6) cells ml(-1)). [Causes of jellyfish blooms and their influence on marine environment].

Jellyfish blooms have damaged the normal composition and function of marine ecosystem and ecological environments, which have been one of the new marine ecological disasters. In this study, we summarized the possible inducements of jellyfish blooms, and the influences of jellyfish blooms on biogenic elements, dissolved oxygen, seawater acidity and biological community were discussed emphatically. The results showed that jellyfish blooms had a close contact with its physiological structure and life history, which had favorable characteristics including simple body struc- ture, rapid growth, thr

Characterization of the anopheline vector breeding habitats: Implications for elimination of malaria in tribal inhabited Car Nicobar Island.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Malaria is an important public health problem in Andaman & Nicobar archipelago. Among the three districts, Nicobar is the most endemic district where API is >2. In this district, the malaria incidence in Car Nicobar Tehsil has declined steadily over the past 10 years. A renewed initiative to consolidate this gain is being made with the ultimate objective of achieving zero indigenous transmission of malaria in Car Nicobar. So, the present study undertook a close environmental monitoring of water bodies for assessing changes in the risk potential of mosquito vector breed

The occurrence of Anisakis spp. in Australian waters: past, present, and future trends.

As one of the world's megadiverse countries, Australian biodiversity is vital for global biodiversity. Nematodes belonging to the genus Anisakis (family Anisakidae) are an important part of this biodiversity due to their ability to be repeatedly transmitted among their intermediate hosts before reaching the top of the food pyramid. Therefore, they have a significant impact on the community structures of various ecosystems. In addition, globally, they are known to be of medical and veterinary significance. The aim of this article is to provide an update on the current knowledge about these impo
