The effects of neuromodulation interventions on the eating behaviors of patients with eating disorders compared to healthy controls, sham therapies, and other therapeutic approaches: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatments for eating disorders (EDs) typically include nutritional rehabilitation, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy, often resulting in modest effectiveness. Neuromodulation has been proposed as a potential add-on strategy. This review aims to critically evaluate its effects on EDs. METHODS: The PICO framework was used to conduct a search according to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews (PROSPERO Registration no. CRD42024559700). Descriptive and clinical data for each study, including comorbidity and safety, were tabulated by disorder. Quality assessment was p

Correlations between weight perception and overt risk-taking among Canadian adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Perceptions of body weight represent an important health issue for Canadian adolescents. While associations between weight perception and mental health concerns like eating disorder symptomatology are well established, there is need for more Canadian evidence about how weight perception is associated with overt risk-taking among adolescents, and further how such associations differ by biological sex. METHODS: We conducted a national analysis of grade 9-10 students participating in the 2017-2018 cycle of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Canada. This analy

Screening for impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease and dopamine agonist use: a study of pharmacokinetic and psychological risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Dopamine agonist (DA) use is considered the main risk factor for impulse control disorder (ICD) development in Parkinson's disease (PD). Besides DAs, personality traits and cognitive features may represent risk factors for ICDs. The primary aim of this study was to investigate differences in DA plasma concentrations in PD patients with and without a positive screening for ICDs according to validated tools. The secondary aim was to compare the psychological profile between ICD positive and negative screened patients. METHODS: PD patients receiving chronic DA therapy were screened

The investigation of mechanisms underlying addictive behaviors: a case-control study.

Background: The contradictory nature of behavioral addictions has sustained a nondefinitive debate regarding their construct validity. Objective(s): The current study aims at exploring mechanisms underlying two distinct classes of behaviors-behavioral addictions characterized by core alterations in reward processing systems (ARPS) and behaviors with a main function of maladaptive coping. Methods: This case-control study included 99 treatment-seeking individuals with a primary diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (male: N = 68; female: N = 31) and 74 healthy control (HC) subjects (male: N = 38; fe

Abnormal structural brain network and hemisphere-specific changes in bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by episodic binge eating and purging behaviors. Disrupted neural processes of self-regulation, taste-rewarding, and body image has been associated with the pathogenesis of BN. However, the structural basis for these behavioral and functional deficits remains largely unknown. We employed diffusion tensor imaging and graph theory approaches (including the nodal properties and network-based statistics (NBS)) to characterize the whole-brain structural network of 48 BN and 44 healthy women. For nodal measures of strength, local efficiency, and betweenness centr

Altered 5-HT(2A) receptor binding after recovery from bulimia-type anorexia nervosa: relationships to harm avoidance and drive for thinness.

Several lines of evidence suggest that a disturbance of serotonin neuronal pathways may contribute to the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). This study applied positron emission tomography (PET) to investigate the brain serotonin 2A (5-HT(2A)) receptor, which could contribute to disturbances of appetite and behavior in AN and BN. To avoid the confounding effects of malnutrition, we studied 10 women recovered from bulimia-type AN (REC AN-BN, > 1 year normal weight, regular menstrual cycles, no binging, or purging) compared with 16 healthy control women (CW) using PE

Compulsive behaviors in patients with Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Several impulse control disorders (ICDs) may develop in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to identify the frequency and phenomenology of ICDs in our PD population. METHODS: Among 554 PD patients examined in a 3-year period, we identified 33 patients with ICDs. Disease duration, gender, and age-matched 65 PD patients without ICDs were selected as controls. We noted age-at-onset, duration, and severity of PD, dose and types of dopaminergic treatment, as well as presence of motor complications in both groups. RESULTS: Of 554 patients, 33 (5.9%) had ICDs, of whom, 27 we

The correlation between anorexia nervosa and childhood traumatic experience: the mediating role of impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa (AN) involves multiple factors, among which childhood traumatic experience has attracted attention. Emotional abuse, as a form of trauma, may exert a predictive effect on AN. In addition, childhood traumatic experience is closely linked to impulsivity, yet the trauma-impulsivity-AN mediation pathway has not been directly validated. The purpose of this study is to compare differences in childhood traumatic experience of patients with different subtypes of AN, as well as exploring the mediating role of impulsivity between emotional abuse in childh

Internalized Weight Bias Is Associated With Dysregulated Affect and Binge Eating in Daily Life Among Adults of High Body Weight With and Without HIV.

BACKGROUND: High weight status (ie, body mass index ≥30 kg) is prevalent among people living with HIV, yet few studies have examined internalized weight bias (IWB) and its links to health outcomes in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether momentary IWB was associated with contemporaneous and prospective risk for dysregulated affect and binge eating in the daily lives of adults of high weight status with HIV, and a reference group of adults of high weight status without HIV. DESIGN: This study is a secondary analysis of data from a 2-week ecological momentary assessment study

Analysis of Blame, Guilt, and Shame Related to Body and Body Weight and Their Relationship with the Context of Psychological Functioning Among the Pediatric Population with Overweight and Obesity: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: There is scientific evidence showing that body- and/or body weight-related blaming, guilting, and shaming continue to be both promoted and tolerated in many societal contexts, including schools and healthcare settings. A deeply ingrained belief still prevails among many individuals that inducing these negative emotions can serve as a motivator for children and adolescents to engage in obesity treatment. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to examine these emotions (blame, guilt, shame) in relation to body weight and their impact on psychological functioning w

Identification of Psychological Treatment Dropout Predictors Using Machine Learning Models on Italian Patients Living with Overweight and Obesity Ineligible for Bariatric Surgery.

According to the main international guidelines, patients with obesity and psychiatric/psychological disorders who cannot be addressed to surgery are recommended to follow a nutritional approach and a psychological treatment. A total of 94 patients (T0) completed a battery of self-report measures: Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11), Binge-Eating Scale (BES), Obesity-Related Well-Being Questionnaire-97 (ORWELL-97), and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2). Then, twelve sessions of a brief psychodynamic psychotherapy were delivered,

Sexual minority status and food and alcohol disturbance among college students: The moderating role of body esteem.

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; restricting caloric intake before, during, or after drinking to either offset calories or to increase intoxication) is common among college students and poses a threat to students' health. In conjunction, sexual minority (SM; i.e., not exclusively heterosexual) college students may be at increased risk of engaging in alcohol misuse and disordered eating compared to their heterosexual peers due to exposure to minority stress. However, little research has examined whether engagement in FAD differs by SM status. Body esteem (BE) is an important resilience factor

The changing profile of eating disorders and related sociocultural factors in Japan between 1700 and 2020: A systematic scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changing profile of the phenotypic expression of eating disorders (EDs) and related sociocultural factors in Japan between 1700 and 2020. METHOD: The authors conducted a systematic scoping review in accordance with the PRISMA statement guidelines for scoping reviews. RESULTS: Findings indicate that Kampo doctors reported more than 50 patients with restrictive EDs in the 1700s, when Japan adopted a national isolation policy. On the other hand, only a few reports of EDs were found between 1868 and 1944, when rapid Westernization occur

Rumination as a transdiagnostic factor underlying transitions between internalizing symptoms and aggressive behavior in early adolescents.

The high degree of comorbidity among mental disorders has generated interest in identifying transdiagnostic processes associated with multiple types of psychopathology. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema conceptualized rumination as one such transdiagnostic process associated with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, binge eating, and self-injurious behavior. The degree to which rumination accounts for the co-occurrence of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, however, has never been tested. We used a sample of early adolescents (N = 1,065) assessed at 3 time points spanning 7 months to examine

Effect of nivasorexant (ACT-539313), a selective orexin-1-receptor antagonist, on multiple cytochrome P450 probe substrates in vitro and in vivo using a cocktail approach in healthy subjects.

Nivasorexant, a selective orexin-1-receptor antagonist, has recently been assessed in the treatment of humans with binge-eating disorder. Herein, the inhibitory potential of nivasorexant on cytochromes P450 (CYPs) 2C9, 2C19, and 3A4 was evaluated. Human liver microsomes/recombinant CYP enzymes were evaluated in vitro. In vivo, a single-center, open-label, fixed-sequence study was performed in healthy adults to explore the effect of 100 mg nivasorexant administered twice daily (b.i.d.) on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of flurbiprofen (50 mg, CYP2C9), omeprazole (20 mg, CYP2C19), midazolam (2 mg, CY

A genome-wide association study of anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex and heritable eating disorder characterized by dangerously low body weight. Neither candidate gene studies nor an initial genome-wide association study (GWAS) have yielded significant and replicated results. We performed a GWAS in 2907 cases with AN from 14 countries (15 sites) and 14 860 ancestrally matched controls as part of the Genetic Consortium for AN (GCAN) and the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 3 (WTCCC3). Individual association analyses were conducted in each stratum and meta-analyzed across all 15 discovery data sets. Seventy-six (72 indepen

Factors associated with recovery from anorexia nervosa: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: To examine factors associated with the outcome of anorexia nervosa among women from the general population. METHOD: Women (N = 2,881) from the 1975-1979 birth cohorts of Finnish twins were screened for lifetime DSM-IV anorexia nervosa (N = 55 cases) using questionnaires and the SCID interview. Potential factors associated with the likelihood of recovery were addressed in the same assessment. Recovery was defined as restoration of weight, menstruation, and the absence of bingeing and purging for at least one year prior to assessment. Using two-tailed t tests and Pearson's chi-squar

Parkinson's disease-related disorders in the impulsive-compulsive spectrum.

In Parkinson's disease (PD), there is increasing evidence for disorders in the impulsive-compulsive spectrum, related to the disease itself, to the pharmacological management of this disease or to both. These disorders comprise dopamine deficiency syndrome (with immediate reward seeking behaviour), dopamine dependency syndrome (with addictive behaviour), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (with both addictive behaviour and stereotyped behaviour) and impulse control disorders (such as pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, binge eating and hypersexuality). These disorders are especially seen
