Cyclic contact fatigue behavior of baria-silicate glass-ceramics as a function of crystal aspect ratio.

Ceramic materials are potentially useful for dental applications because of their esthetic potential and biocompatibility. However, evidence of contact fatigue damage in ceramics raises considerable concern regarding its effect on the survival probability predicted for dental prostheses. To simulate intraoral conditions, Hertzian indentation loading with steel indenters was applied in this study to characterize the fatigue failure mechanisms of ceramic materials. Baria silicate glasses and glass-ceramics with different aspect ratios of crystals were selected because the glass and crystal phase

Impairment in facial expression generation in patients with repaired unilateral cleft lip: Effects of the physical properties of facial soft tissues.

Patients with repaired unilateral cleft lip with palate (UCLP) often show dysmorphology and distorted facial motion clinically, which can cause psychological issues. However, no report has clarified the details concerning distorted facial motion and the corresponding possible causative factors. In this study, we hypothesized that the physical properties of the scar and surrounding facial soft tissue might affect facial displacement while smiling in patients with UCLP (Cleft group). We thus examined the three-dimensional (3D) facial displacement while smiling in the Cleft and Control groups in

Abnormal lacuno-canalicular network and negative correlation between serum osteocalcin and Cobb angle indicate abnormal osteocyte function in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a prevalent spinal deformity occurring during peripubertal growth period that affects 1-4% of adolescents globally without clear etiopathogenetic mechanism. Low bone mineral density is an independent and significant prognostic factor for curve progression. Currently, the cause underlying low bone mass in AIS remains elusive. Osteocytes play an important role in bone metabolism and mineral homeostasis, but its role in AIS has not been studied. In the present study, iliac bone tissues were harvested from 21 patients with AIS (mean age of 14.3 ± 2.20 yr ol

Carbon/PEEK nails: a case-control study of 22 cases.

BACKGROUND: Interest around carbon/PEEK plates and nails has been raising. The elastic modulus close to the bone, the high load-carrying capacity and radiolucency make CFR/PEEK materials a potential breakthrough. In the literature, there are abundant data about CFR/PEEK plates in the treatment of proximal humerus, distal radius and distal fibula fractures. In patients affected by bone metastasis, CFR/PEEK nails were proved effective and safe with 12 months of follow-up. Very little is known about performances of CFR/PEEK nails in patients affected by other pathologies. PURPOSES: The aim of th

Decontamination of hard cheeses by pulsed UV light.

Cheese is a ready-to-eat food that may be contaminated on the surface by undesirable spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms during production, packaging, and postpackaging processes. Penicillium roqueforti is commonly found on cheese surfaces at refrigeration temperatures and is one of the most common spoilage fungal species. Consumption of cheese contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can result in foodborne listeriosis. Therefore, cheese should be decontaminated at postprocessing stages. Pulsed UV light is a nonthermal method for food preservation that involves the use of intense short pul

Effect of a treatment strategy consisting of pravastatin, vitamin E, and homocysteine lowering on arterial compliance and distensibility in patients with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness is increased in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Intervention studies aimed at reduction of arterial stiffness in dialysis patients have been disappointing. We therefore investigated the effect of pravastatin, vitamin E, and homocysteine lowering on arterial compliance and distensibility coefficients in mild-to-moderate CKD. METHODS: This is a sub-study of the ATIC study, a randomized, double-blind trial in 93 CKD patients. The treatment group received pravastatin to which vitamin E supplementation was added after 6 months and homocysteine lowering therapy after an

Biomechanical mechanisms of orbital wall fractures - a transient finite element analysis.

As the biomechanical mechanisms of orbital wall fractures are still under research, three different fracture mechanisms were tested in a finite element based investigation. In contrast to earlier studies, a finer skeletal model and a transient dynamic simulation were used to test pure hydraulic, pure buckling and a mixed force transmission. Results showed that each set-up led to different orbital fracture patterns, which correlate well with clinical findings. Therefore the conclusion is that different mechanisms may act together explaining the variety of clinical fracture situations. Biomechan

Three-dimensional stress distribution in the human periodontal ligament in masticatory, parafunctional, and trauma loads: finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The presence of the periodontal ligament (PDL) makes it possible to absorb and distribute loads produced during masticatory function and other tooth contacts into the alveolar process via the alveolar bone proper. However, several factors affect the integrity of periodontal structures causing the destruction of the connective matrix and cells, the loss of fibrous attachment, and the resorption of alveolar bone. METHODS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution by finite element analysis in a PDL in three-dimensional models of the upper central incisor unde

Phosphorus-driven changes in leaf phosphorus fractions shape species-specific hydraulics in a subtropical forest.

Phosphorus (P) is essential for plant physiological function, yet how P allocation among leaf fractions shapes trait responses in subtropical forests remains unclear. Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for plant photosynthetic and physiological functions. In subtropical ecosystems where P is limited, the allocation of P among different functional fractions in leaf is a potentially adaptive strategy for plants to cope with low soil P availability. However, the effect of imbalanced anthropogenic P input on leaf P fractions and their contributions to leaf functional traits remains unclear. H

Evaluation of infrapatellar fat pad elasticity in knee osteoarthritis using IVIM-DWI-based virtual MR elastography: repeatability and reproducibility analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fibrosis of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) leads to changes in its stiffness, which may impact knee osteoarthritis. However, few studies have utilized virtual MR elastography to assess the variations of the IPFP. This study aimed to evaluate the value of intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI)-based virtual MR elastography (vMRE) in the IPFP by assessing the test-retest repeatability, as well as intra- and inter-observer reproducibility. METHODS: A total of 71 subjects underwent IVIM-DWI examinations, which were conducted twice with an interval of 30-6
