Variability in speech dyspraxia.

In a volume dedicated to Professor Crystal, this study takes up some remarks of his (1982) regarding definitions of disorders and use of day-to-day clinical data. The topic chosen relates to the notion of variability in speech dyspraxia. Several different uses of the term are noted, but the one used in this paper focuses on variability of errors in a given word on a repeated-trials task. This task was employed to investigate whether, as previously claimed, speech dyspraxics differ from other pronunciation-disordered groups in terms of error variability. Results indicate that as a group they di

Comprehension of three-argument clitic left dislocations in Catalan Broca's aphasia.

People with Broca's aphasia have difficulty understanding certain syntactic structures, but the cause remains debated. This study investigates the comprehension of clitic left dislocations with three thematic roles in Catalan, compared to declaratives (with and without indirect object clitics) and subject topicalisations. These understudied structures are useful for testing the hypothesis that comprehension deficits result from intervention effects due to processing deficits. We conducted a sentence-picture matching task with eight individuals with Broca's aphasia and eight matched controls. R

The expression of emotions in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias: An analysis of the deterioration patterns and compensatory strategies.

For populations with language disorders, communicating their affective needs can be frustrating. Research has helped understand how people with dementia express their emotions and how they perceive them. This study aims to: (i) find out whether the capacity to use language to express emotions deteriorates as the cognitive impairment progresses in dementia; (ii) observe whether specific impairment patterns exist for each stage of the disease; (iii) verify whether compensatory strategies are used to express emotions when language begins to deteriorate. Twenty-seven participants at different stag

An investigation of factors associated with speech intelligibility in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Integrating acoustic and lingual motor measures.

Speech intelligibility in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progressively declines, but contributing clinical factors may vary according to disease presentation and extent of bulbar involvement. This study examined factors associated with intelligibility in three ALS groups: spinal-onset, spinal-onset with bulbar involvement (spinal + bulbar), and bulbar-onset. Speech intelligibility (visual analogue scale), hypernasality, maximum tongue pressure, respiratory function (%VC and FEV1/FVC), and second formant (F2) transition measures (transition duration and excursion) were evaluated. Restoration of speech articulatory control and functional connectivity through visually-guided rehabilitation in chronic non-fluent aphasia: A case report study.

Computer-based therapy has shown promise in speech rehabilitation for individuals with language disorders. In this study, we investigated behavioural, acoustic and brain network changes in a patient with chronic non-fluent aphasia who underwent an enriched rehabilitation programme, combining the Ultraspeech-player software with conventional speech therapy, followed by a period of conventional therapy alone. The software provided visualisation of articulatory movements recorded from a reference speaker. Comprehensive assessments, conducted before and after each rehabilitation period, included p

Greek-speaking children's developmental patterns of three-member adjunct consonant clusters.

Research on Greek adjunct cluster acquisition has mainly examined 2-member clusters (/sC/), with limited attention to developmental patterns in 3-member clusters (/sCC/). This study investigates Greek /spɾ, stɾ, skl/, comparing them with related 2-member clusters (/st, sp, sk, pɾ, tɾ, kl/) to disentangle developmental paths. Data were collected from 161 monolingual Greek children aged 2;0-6;0 using the PAel picture-naming task targeting word-initial clusters. Results reveal cluster-specific distributions across four overlapping stages (Ø, C, CC, CCC), shaped by markedness, sonority, and Greek

Comparing compound verb production in Persian-speaking non-brain-damaged adults, and people with fluent and non-fluent aphasia.

Persian verbs are classified into simple and compound (complex) verbs (CVs). Simple verbs contain one word; CVs comprise more than one word, including nominal and verbal components. This study investigates how people with aphasia (PWA) and non-brain-damaged (NBD) adults produce complex verbs, the types of errors they make and what the effect is of lemma representation and the compound status of the verbs. Forty-five participants, including 11 fluent PWA, 9 non-fluent PWA, and 25 NBDs, completed action naming and connected speech tasks. The findings revealed that CV retrieval was impaired in PW

Acoustic and perceptual characteristics of voice tremor: A systematic review.

This systematic review synthesised evidence on the acoustic and perceptual characteristics of voice tremor (VT) in the adult population, the speech tasks used in VT evaluations, and the impact of VT on quality of life (QoL). Following PRISMA guidelines, 58 studies were included and assessed for risk of bias. Acoustically, VT is consistently characterised by rhythmic modulation of frequency and amplitude. Secondary acoustic measures, including jitter, shimmer, noise, and cepstral measures, demonstrate fluctuations in VT, but are not defining features. Perceptually, listeners show greater sensit

Cognitive-pragmatic challenges in the verbal behaviour of Iraqi children with Down syndrome.

This research study examined the cognitive-pragmatic aspects of verbal communication abilities in Iraqi children with Down syndrome by utilising the Children's Communication Checklist-2 (CCC-2). Forty-four children aged 8-12 years were evaluated using the Arabic version of the CCC-2, which was completed by a parent, legal guardian, or teacher familiar with the child's daily communication. A mixed-method design was used to analyse the data. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and correlation, while the qualitative caregiver data were interpreted usi

Application of team-based learning to support knowledge acquisition and retention of craniofacial content in a graduate speech-language pathology course: A pilot study.

This study examined graduate student confidence, knowledge retention, and perceptions of a craniofacial disorders course delivered using team-based learning (TBL). Seventeen graduate students from a single class participated. Confidence was measured by survey pre-course, post-course, and 6 months later. Knowledge was assessed through exam scores, and retention was evaluated 7 months later using Cranio Q oral questions. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. Confidence increased from pre-course to post-course and remained elevated at 6 months. Confidence was weakly correlated wit

An exploration of aphasia symptom profiles in speakers of Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic).

Research into language disorders such as aphasia and what they can reveal about the cognitive and neural underpinnings of language should be informed by crosslinguistic descriptions. It is particularly important to include languages that are highly dissimilar to widely studied languages like English. Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic) is one such language - a polysynthetic language of the Inuit-Yupik-Unangan language family spoken by approximately 60,000 people in Greenland and Denmark. Previous research has indicated that non-fluent aphasia in Kalaallisut exhibits different features from those fo

Melodic intonation therapy paired with video feedback: A potential method for bolstering production?

Melodic intonation therapy (MIT) is a behavioural speech-language intervention that uses pitch and rhythm (i.e. melody) to increase speech fluency and facilitate improved word retrieval. It is a well-known therapeutic option for individuals with non-fluent aphasia. Though MIT can enhance speech and language production, its clinical utility is limited when those engaged in MIT are unable to routinely use its facilitatory techniques independently. Video feedback is a tool that can enhance learning and has shown potential as a mechanism to bolster behavioural interventions. The present study aime

Speech-music therapy for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech and intellectual disability: A multiple single-subject design study.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a rare condition in the general population, but it is more prevalent in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. 75% of children with CAS also have intellectual disability (ID), but these children are rarely included in treatment studies. In this study, the effectiveness of Speech-Music Therapy for Aphasia and Apraxia (SMTA) is evaluated in the treatment of children with CAS+ID. SMTA was evaluated in a multiple-single subject design study, comparing 10 weeks of treatment with two months of no treatment in four participants. They varied in the severity of

Variability of oral-nasal balance characteristics in children with cleft lip and palate over time.

The accurate assessment of oral-nasal balance disorders in children with cleft lip and palate is a perennial problem in Speech-Language Pathology. Nasalance scores obtained with a nasometer can contribute to the diagnosis of oral-nasal balance disorders. The present study investigated how consistent such classifications are over time. Twenty-seven children with cleft lip and palate were recorded six times with a nasometer headset over the course of an orthodontic palatal expansion treatment. Nasalance scores were considered hypernasal when they were higher than 30% for a non-nasal sentence and

Preliminary findings into speech inconsistency in dialectal Cypriot-Greek speaking children: A comparison between children with typical development and speech sound disorders.

Speech sound disorders (SSD) are highly prevalent in preschool-aged children, yet their identification remains challenging in linguistically diverse contexts where speech variability may reflect dialectal difference rather than disorder. The present study investigated whether token-to-token speech inconsistency differentiates dialectal Cypriot-Greek-speaking children with typical development (TD) from peers with SSD. Twenty preschoolers (mean age = 5;6) participated: 10 with TD and 10 with SSD. Speech inconsistency was assessed using the DO.KI.GLO Inconsistency Protocol, a Cypriot-Greek adapta

Reliability of a procedure for segmenting extemporaneous speech produced by speakers with Parkinson disease.

Gravelin et al. (2023) developed a segmentation procedure informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) for parsing extemporaneous speech samples. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the reliability, utility, and application of this system when it is applied to samples produced by 10 participants with Parkinson Disease (PD). Two expert analysts and one clinician analyst utilised an SFL-based segmentation procedure to identify clauses and clause complexes. We calculated intra- and inter-rater reliability for each analyst and pair of analysts. We also measured speech acoustics

Developmental trajectory of narrative skills in typically developing Cypriot-Greek-speaking children: Implications for language assessment.

Oral narratives are important for assessing children as narratives provide useful information about children's language development. This study aimed to explore how the narrative skills of Cypriot-Greek speaking children develop in the domains of syntactic productivity, complexity, and lexical diversity, during their preschool and primary school years. Additionally, the study sought to determine whether there was any difference in the performance of boys and girls on the narrative measures. One hundred and twenty-nine 4-9-year-old typically developing Cypriot-Greek-speaking children were recru

International perspectives and attitudes towards speech and language therapy and multilingualism.

For decades, survey studies have shown that adequately assessing and treating multilingual children is a challenge for Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs), due to the scarcity of clinical tools and procedures that take into account the influence that atypical linguistic exposure and the L1 exert on L2 performance. However, the exact reasons why such tools and procedures are not available to SLTs were not fully clarified in previous studies. In a new online survey, 297 SLTs from 17 different countries were asked about their perspectives on SLT service provision for multilingual children with re

Managing interactional breakdowns with children with ASD: Therapists' practices when directives face challenges in therapeutic interactions.

Effective interventions to promote language competence, cognitive abilities and integrate these skills into daily activities for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often involve providing guidance and training through specific tasks, typically delivered by speech and language therapists through directive interactions. However, engaging children with ASD in such activities is not straightforward and often fraught with challenges. Yet we know very little about how practitioners cope when the interaction breaks down, for example, due to misunderstandings or failures to engage. This stud

Sentence repetition abilities in young Colombian children from public and private school settings.

Previous research across different languages has consistently shown the effectiveness of sentence repetition tasks in evaluating morphosyntactic abilities in young children. Specifically, it has been stated that sentence repetition abilities can serve as clinical markers, helping to distinguish between children with and without language disorders. However, despite the large body of evidence in this field, very few studies have assessed the abilities of children from different socioeconomic backgrounds. In this study, we administered the 20-SRT, a shortened version of the 33-SRT developed by Br
