Infection prevention and control adherence among SARS-CoV-2 infected healthcare workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: lessons for future outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Health care worker (HCW) infections during outbreaks of high-consequence pathogens, from SARS-CoV-2 to Ethiopia's 2025-2026 Marburg outbreak, highlight persistent Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) gaps. We evaluated IPC adherence and its determinants among infected HCWs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to inform future outbreak preparedness. METHODS: This census-based cross-sectional study (March 2020-March 2021) evaluated 1152 SARS-CoV-2-infected HCWs with clinical exposures 14 days pre-diagnosis. Environments were classified via an adapted OSHA pyramid into: High-Pathogen Designat

[Arthrodesis of the infected ankle joint: results with the Ilizarov external fixator].

BACKGROUND: The treatment of severe bacterial infections of the ankle joint is difficult and complex. In the case of a chronic infection with destruction of the ankle joint, a tibiotalar arthrodesis with external fixation is the treatment of choice. In this study the results of ankle arthrodesis due to bacterial infection using the Ilizarov external fixator are presented. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2001 and 2004 37 patients (10 female, 27 male, mean age 58 years) were treated with a tibiotalar arthrodesis using the Ilizarov fixator. All patients had a confirmed infection in the course of t

Orthotic devices for treating patellofemoral pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a frequently reported condition in active adults. A wide variety of conservative treatment strategies have been described. As yet, no optimal strategy has been identified. Application of orthotic devices e.g. knee braces, knee straps, forms of taping of the knee, active training devices, knee sleeves and in-shoe orthotics to support the foot have been advocated to treat this condition. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of foot and knee orthotics for treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculosk

Effects of chronic parasitosis on women's health.

Parasitic diseases are closely related to the lack of sanitation (unavailability of potable water, inadequate disposal of human waste, lack of latrines) or the absence of personal hygiene. They are also closely linked to warm and humid climates, and are therefore considered tropical diseases. This chapter addresses chronic hookworm parasitosis and malaria, and their effect on women's health. Of all Helminthes, hookworms cause the most severe anemia because of iron deficiency due to chronic blood loss. Worldwide, an estimated 51% of pregnant women suffer from anemia-almost twice as many as non-

Arthrodesis as an early alternative to nonoperative management of charcot arthropathy of the diabetic foot.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to evaluate the use of arthrodesis of the tarsal-metatarsal area for the treatment of Eichenholtz stage-I Charcot arthropathy in patients with diabetes. Currently, the standard treatment of stage-I Charcot arthropathy is the application of a non-weight-bearing total-contact cast. Although this treatment can be effective for allowing a patient to walk without undergoing an operation, a nonunion or malunion may still result. The subsequent deformities may lead to complications, including ulceration of the foot and the need for operative intervention. Recently

Podoconiosis treatment in northern Ethiopia (GoLBet): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is one of the forgotten types of leg swelling (elephantiasis) in the tropics. Unlike the other, better-known types of leg swelling, podoconiosis is not caused by any parasite, virus or bacterium, but by an abnormal reaction to minerals found in the clay soils of some tropical highland areas. Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) have been responsible for the development of simple treatment methods without systematic evaluation of its effectiveness. It is essential that a large scale, fully controlled, pragmatic trial of the intervention is conducted. We aim to test the

Functional Outcomes of Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty in Avascular Necrosis of the Hip: A Prospective Study.

Introduction Avascular necrosis occurs due to impaired blood supply to the bone. It can be caused by fractures, dislocations, chronic steroid use, chronic alcohol use, coagulopathy, congenital source, and many other factors. It mostly affects the femoral head (hip joint). Its management can be conservative or invasive. Total hip arthroplasty is the treatment of choice for third and fourth stage avascular necrosis that can be cemented or uncemented. The purpose of this study is to access the functional outcomes of cementless total hip arthroplasty in patients with avascular necrosis of the hip.

Water, sanitation, hygiene, and soil-transmitted helminth infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preventive chemotherapy represents a powerful but short-term control strategy for soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Since humans are often re-infected rapidly, long-term solutions require improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). The purpose of this study was to quantitatively summarize the relationship between WASH access or practices and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the associations of improved WASH on infection with STH (Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookwor

Do Ankle-Foot Orthoses Reduce Cavovarus Deformity in Individuals With Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease?

BACKGROUND: The use of ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) is a mainstay in the treatment of cavovarus deformity associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, but their ability to reduce cavovarus deformity is poorly characterized. Similarly, associations between AFO design features and degree of deformity reduction are unknown. Weightbearing CT has been used to describe CMT disease-related cavovarus deformity through both two-dimensional (2D) radiographic measures and three-dimensional statistical shape modeling (SSM). However, neither method has been used to evaluate differences in foot posture
