OBJECTIVES: The phentermine/topiramate combination represents one of the most effective anti-obesity therapies under investigation; however, its safety profile requires further exploration. This study aimed to systematically analyze adverse events (AEs) associated with phentermine/topiramate using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, identify potential safety signals, and provide evidence to inform safer clinical decision-making.
METHODS: Reports related to phentermine/topiramate were extracted from the FAERS database covering the period between the third quarter of 2012 a

Weight suppression (WS), the discrepancy between a person's highest ever and current body weight, has been found in a number of studies to be associated with the onset and maintenance of bulimia nervosa (BN). The current theories on the working mechanism hypothesize that individuals with BN might be caught in a (psycho)biobehavioral bind and suggest a circle of weight loss, weight suppression, weight gain, and binge eating that in theory should also apply to a broad spectrum of binge eating symptomatology. This study was intended to test the hypothesis that WS predicts current binge eating wit

BACKGROUND: Acute stress is thought to reduce goal-directed behaviour, an effect purportedly associated with stress-induced release of catecholamines. In contrast, experimentally increased systemic catecholamine levels have been shown to increase goal-directed behaviour. Whether experimentally increased catecholamine function can modulate stress-induced reductions in goal-directed behaviour and its neural substrates, is currently unknown.
AIM: To assess whether and how experimentally induced increases in dopamine and noradrenaline contribute to the acute stress effects on goal-directed behavi

BACKGROUND: Given that anorexia nervosa (AN) is a life-threatening mental disorder and has poor clinical outcomes, novel effective treatments are warranted, especially for severe and persistent cases.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety, feasibility, and clinical outcomes of using deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in treatment-refractory AN patients.
METHODS: A total of 28 women with refractory AN underwent NAcc-DBS and completed this 2-year follow-up study. The clinical outcomes, including body mass index (BMI) and mood, anxiety, and obsessive symptoms, were asse

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are common among Parkinson's disease patients using dopamine agonists. We wanted to determine whether ICD patients have higher dopamine agonist serum concentrations than those without any sign of ICD.
METHODS: Patients who used either pramipexole or ropinirole depot once daily were screened for ICDs using the validated Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease-Rating Scale. Those who scored above the cut-off for one or more of the four defined ICDs (gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive shopping,

BACKGROUND: Somatic and psychiatric illnesses and multimorbidities increase stress-vulnerability and decrease well-being.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify high-risk disorder profiles for lower well-being and well-being decline under stress, modelling COVID-19 as a natural experiment.
METHODS: The global Collaborative Outcomes Study on Health and Functioning during Infection Times survey assessed the World Health Organization-Five Well-being Index (WHO-5) (0-100) retrospectively pre-pandemic and intra-pandemically. Mixed-effects models, controlling for demographic/pandemic-related covariates,

Individuals who struggle with binge eating often report a history of trauma and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), but there is still a paucity of studies on the relationship between PTSS (as opposed to trauma exposure) and binge eating specifically. The current study aimed to contribute to a small body of literature surrounding the link between PTSS and binge eating. Binge eating may be a behavioral coping mechanism against negative affect; however, it has been proposed that additional psychological mechanisms (e.g. emotion regulation difficulties and emotional eating) may explain the lin

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impulse control disorders (ICD) are a group of behaviors in Parkinson disease (PD), (compulsive buying, gambling, binge eating, craving sweets, and hypersexuality) that occur in up to 20% of individuals with PD, sometimes with devastating results. We sought to determine the rate of ICD screening based on 2020 quality measures for PD care by the American Academy of Neurology.
METHODS: We conducted a quality improvement project to document and improve physician ICD screening in a tertiary movement disorder program. Serial medical records were reviewed for 5 weeks befo

Binge eating has a high prevalence among bariatric patients and is associated with post-surgical weight gain. This study examined the potential mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relation between attachment insecurity and binge eating among this population. Participants were 1388 adult pre-bariatric surgery candidates from an accredited bariatric surgery assessment centre in Toronto, Ontario. Participants completed measures of psychological functioning, including attachment style and emotion regulation. Mediation analyses revealed that difficulties with emotion regulation

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with high mortality due to severe complications. Osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS), although rare, is a severe neurological complication that has been associated with rapid correction of chronic hyponatremia. The occurrence of ODS in patients with AN, particularly the binge-eating/purging subtype (AN-BP), remains poorly recognized despite their increased susceptibility arising from chronic malnutrition and multiple electrolyte disturbances.

OBJECTIVE: The association between eating disorders (EDs) and harmful substance use (substance use that causes psychosocial impairment) is well recognized in the literature, and military veterans may be at heightened risk for both issues due to deployment-related stressors. However, little is known about which ED-related symptoms are associated with harmful substance use in veterans, and whether gender plays a differential role in this relationship. Our aims were to: (1) examine gender differences in ED-related symptoms; and (2) examine whether ED-related symptoms differentially predict harmfu

BACKGROUND: Web-based preventive interventions can reduce risk and incidence of bulimia and binge eating disorders among young high-risk women. However, their specific effects on core symptoms of anorexia nervosa (AN) are rather weak.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an indicated, parent-based, Web-based preventive program Eltern als Therapeuten (E@T) in reducing risk factors and symptoms of AN.
METHODS: Girls aged between 11 and 17 years were screened by selected risk factors and early symptoms of AN. At-risk families were then randomized to E@T

Shared decision-making (SDM) means that clinicians and the patient make decisions about the treatment together. Regarding drug treatment in eating disorders (EDs), such decisions may include psychopharmacological treatment for the ED itself, medications for potential co-morbid psychiatric disorders, pharmacological strategies to alleviate the health consequences of an ED, or 'pro re nata' (PRN) medication which is given in acute care when required. Decisions regarding drug treatment in EDs should be specific in terms of the active pharmacological substance, its dose, its route of administratio

Not only philosophers, but also artists and scientists have always struggled to find a universal definition of beauty. Not even Darwin could find an answer to the question: are there any parameters of beauty that we can apply to every species. Nobody can give a valid definition for the perception of beauty in others. Can a definition in subjective terms be achieved? If I say something is beautiful, it only means that it is beautiful for me, but it does not mean that is necessarily beautiful for everyone else. Beauty is a subjective experience, but it is not only a perceptive experience! Accord

INTRODUCTION: Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has high lifetime prevalence rates, low treatment success rates, and high rates of treatment dissatisfaction, early discontinuation of care, and recurrence. Complementary and integrative health (CIH) interventions (non-mainstream practices used with conventional approaches for whole-person treatment) hold potential to overcome many treatment barriers and improve BED treatment outcomes. Some CIH interventions have empirical support for use in eating disorders. However, little is known about the current state of CIH use in BED.
METHODS: This mixed-metho

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex psychiatric disorder, which can lead to specific somatic complications. Undernutrition is a major diagnostic criteria of AN and it can be associated with several micronutrients deficiencies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determinate the prevalence of micronutrients deficiencies and to compare the differences between the two subtypes of AN (restricting type (AN-R) and binge-eating/purging type (AN-BP)).
METHODS: We report a large retrospective, monocentric study of patients that were hospitalized in a highly specialized AN inpatient unit betw

This Practice Parameter reviews evidence-based practices for the evaluation and treatment of eating disorders in children and adolescents. Where empirical support is limited, clinical consensus opinion is used to supplement systematic data review. The Parameter focuses on the phenomenology of eating disorders, comorbidity of eating disorders with other psychiatric and medical disorders, and treatment in children and adolescents. Because the database related to eating disorders in younger patients is limited, relevant literature drawn from adult studies is included in the discussion.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To enable clinicians to identify the clinical picture and treatment progress and to adjust eating plans according to personal energy needs, it is important to know the patient's correct resting metabolic rate (RMR). Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the preferred method for assessment of RMR, but long duration of measurement increases the load on the patients, and reduces the effectiveness in clinical and scientific settings. Further; not all patients reach a valid RMR according to the suggested best practice protocol, with 5 min of steady state (SS) where respiratory gas volum

OBJECTIVE: To assess the functioning of mesolimbic and fronto-striatal areas involved in reward-based spatial learning in teenaged girls with bulimia nervosa (BN) that might be involved in the development and maintenance of maladaptive behaviors characteristic of the disorder.
METHOD: We compared functional magnetic resonance imaging blood oxygen level-dependent response in 27 adolescent girls with BN to that of 27 healthy, age-matched control participants during a reward-based learning task that required learning to use extra-maze cues to navigate a virtual 8-arm radial maze to find hidden r

BACKGROUND: Kleine-Levin syndrome is an uncommon disorder with recurrent episodes of hypersomnia, clearly associated with behavioral abnormalities like binge eating, hypersexuality and abnormal behavior. Many patients may not necessarily fulfill minimum criteria described for diagnosis. We aim to report such patients with atypical presentation resembling the Kleine-Levin syndrome.
METHOD: We evaluated all patients at our clinic who had episodic disturbance in sleep and/or appetite lasting a few days to weeks, not necessarily fulfilling the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD
