Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting physical and linguistic development. To the authors' knowledge, there have been no studies published documenting bilingual linguistic abilities in an individual with RTT. Recent studies have found no evidence of a detrimental effect of bilingual exposure on language development in numerous other neurodevelopmental conditions. The aims of this study were to document bilingualism in RTT and to assess the development of language skills over time. A longitudinal, single-case study approach was taken for this research. The participant

Dental caries (tooth decay) is a disease with a significant global burden. Management may necessitate the extraction of teeth to restore oral health. The association between dental extractions and children's speech is unclear, with clinical implications for speech-language pathologists and dentists. This case series describes a prospective study reporting the impact of primary maxillary incisor teeth extraction on speech sound accuracy for three children (C1 aged 5;6 (years; months), C2 aged 4;6, C3 aged 3;10). Their speech was assessed using the Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phono

Academic writing is a complex task involving microstructure (linguistic-level) and macrostructure (coherence structure) indices. Our goal was to examine the contribution of an academic writing intervention programme among students with intellectual disability at the microstructure and macrostructure levels while characterising the learning curves. Six students with mild intellectual disability studying for a BA (MCA = 30.43, MIQ = 69.17) participated in a spiral intervention programme of 32 lessons focusing on improving paragraph complexity and text structure measured at five time-points. Noonan Syndrome (NS) is a genetic disorder associated with a diverse range of symptoms. This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the linguistic profiles of children and adolescents with NS, focusing on vocabulary, grammar skills, phonological memory skills, working memory skills, and visuospatial skills. Sixteen participants aged 6-16 took part in the study. The findings reveal substantial variation in the affected linguistic areas, with some participants demonstrated normal findings, while inconsistent and overall weak language skills were observed in a large subgroup of part

The current study aimed to assess the effectiveness of incorporating ultrasound visual biofeedback (UVB) into a treatment programme addressing persistent speech sound disorders linked to cleft palate in children who have been unresponsive to traditional therapy approaches. Materials and Methods. A single-subject multiple baseline experiment was conducted with five children aged 6:5-13:5 over a period of 16 therapy sessions. Treatment focused on providing cues from real-time ultrasound images to assist children in modifying their tongue movements. Probe data were collected before, mid, and post

This study investigated the processing of double negation in Chinese children with reading difficulties. The comprehension of Mandarin affirmative, single negative and double negative sentences was tested with Chinese young poor readers and typical readers, using a sentence-picture verification task. Results showed that double negative sentences were most difficult to process for both groups; the poor readers performed significantly worse than the typical readers in comprehending double negative sentences, while no difference between the two groups was observed in comprehending affirmative and

Speakers with motor speech disorders (MSD) present challenges in speech production, one of them being the difficulty to adapt their speech to different modes. However, it is unclear whether different types of MSD are similarly affected when it comes to adapting their speech to various communication contexts. This study investigates the encoding of speech modes in individuals with AoS following focal brain damage and in individuals with hypokinetic dysarthria (HD) secondary to Parkinson's disease. Participants with mild-to-moderate MSD and their age-matched controls performed a delayed producti

Previous research has identified two measures derived from language sample analysis as having a high level of diagnostic accuracy for developmental language disorder (DLD): a verb-based measure, the Finite Verb Morphology Composite (FVMC) and a more comprehensive grammatical measure, the Sentence Point. In this study, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of these two measures using a new group of children with DLD. To determine whether these measures would likely add to diagnostic decision making if used in conjuncion with other tests of language, we also examined the relationship betw

Research on narrative skills in the Malay language is scarce for both typically developing (TD) and children with Developmental Language Disorders (DLD). This study examines the differences in narrative abilities of Malay-speaking school-age children with and without DLD. Fifteen Malay-speaking TD children and 15 children with DLD told four stories elicited using the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narrative (MAIN). Group comparisons were conducted in narrative production (story retelling and story generation) as well as in comprehension. We also examined the differences in both groups'

Dynamic assessment (DA) is a tool used to assess children's learning potential. Research on English-speaking children indicates that DA effectively diagnoses language disorders in monolingual and bilingual children. However, few DAs have been developed for French-speaking children. This study aimed to examine the validity of a dynamic phonological awareness task for differentiating French-speaking monolingual and bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). Thirty-eight monolingual and bilingual children, aged 4-8 years, 23 with typical development (TD) and 15 wit

Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma. This study compares the clinical potential of two dynamic assessment situations, varying amount of adult mediation (autonomous computer game vs. interactive story reading with gra

Previous research has provided strong evidence that speech patterns can help to distinguish between people with early stage neurodegenerative disorders (ND) and healthy controls. This study examined speech patterns in responses to questions asked by an intelligent virtual agent (IVA): a talking head on a computer which asks pre-recorded questions. The study investigated whether measures of response length, speech rate and pausing in responses to questions asked by an IVA help to distinguish between healthy control participants and people diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzhei

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have traditionally been considered separate disorders, although some similarities and overlaps in certain aspects of language have been detected. In this paper, we compare the deficits in receptive grammar in these two disorders. We analyse the proportion of grammatical errors in relation to semantic complexity in 84 children divided into four groups: children with autism language impairment (ALI), with autism language normal (ALN), with DLD, and with typical development (TD), all groups with the same age of receptive voc

The value of learning multiple languages has increased in the past 20 years. Despite this, some professionals continue to provide misinformation about bilingualism to many families around the United States, resulting in recommendations of implementing a monolingual approach for children. This study investigated the perceptions held by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding childhood bilingualism. A total of 320 SLPs completed a survey stating their perceptions on childhood bilingualism for typically developing children and children with disabilities. Based on the number of responses, 29

When speech sound errors persist beyond childhood they are classified as residual speech errors (RSE) and may have detrimental impacts on an individual's social, educational and employment participation. Despite this, individuals who present with RSE are usually not prioritised on large caseloads. The aim of this literature review was to examine what intervention approaches are available in remediating RSE, and how effective are they for adolescents and adults? A systematised review was undertaken. Comprehensive and systematic searching included search of terms across seven databases, forward

This study investigated the comprehension and production of long passives (i.e. bei-constructions with an overt agent) in Mandarin-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Seventeen preschool children with DLD (1 female; mean age: 61 months old) and 23 typically developing (TD) children (6 females; mean age: 62 months old) participated in a sentence-picture matching task (for comprehension) and an elicited production task. Their nonverbal working memory (NVWM) was measured with the fourth edition of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Results showed t

Regardless of the underlying cause for speech impairment in speakers with cleft palate, a universal consequence of cleft palate is reduced speech intelligibility. Still, there is no standardised approach for measuring intelligibility for speakers with cleft speech. The current study aimed to determine the relationship between orthographic transcription (OT)-based measures, interval-scale ratings, and visual analog scale (VAS) ratings for perceptual judgements of intelligibility in speakers with cleft palate as judged by speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The speaker participants were six spe

Alzheimer's disease (AD) can manifest itself with prominent language dysfunction. Incompleteness in discourse refers to the lack of indispensable sentence-constructing elements that hinder communication fluency and accuracy. The current study investigates how the pattern of incompleteness is associated with the descriptive discourse produced by elders withoutAD and those with different stages ofAD. The Chinese discourse samples were collected from the picture description of 40 elders with mild probableAD (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) 21-26, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale-Basic (Mo

This study aimed to assess the intelligibility of so-called 'pseudo-whispered speech' (pseudo-WS), as produced without voice nor pulmonic airstream by some alaryngeal patients prior to rehabilitation. Several perception tests were submitted to three experienced clinicians and three naive listeners, relying on the speech samples of 20 French native speakers: 10 alaryngeal speakers, solely using pseudo-WS when starting speech therapy up to six months after total laryngectomy, and 10 control speakers, recorded in the closest speech mode available, whispered speech (WS). Experts were asked to iden
