Not only philosophers, but also artists and scientists have always struggled to find a universal definition of beauty. Not even Darwin could find an answer to the question: are there any parameters of beauty that we can apply to every species. Nobody can give a valid definition for the perception of beauty in others. Can a definition in subjective terms be achieved? If I say something is beautiful, it only means that it is beautiful for me, but it does not mean that is necessarily beautiful for everyone else. Beauty is a subjective experience, but it is not only a perceptive experience! Accord

OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this study was to test a culturally specific model of binge eating in African American female trauma survivors, investigating potential mechanisms through which trauma exposure and distress were related to binge eating symptomatology.
METHOD: Participants were 179 African American female trauma survivors who completed questionnaires about traumatic experiences; emotional inhibition/regulation difficulties; self-silencing (prioritizing others' needs and adopting external self-evaluation standards); eating for psychological reasons; binge eating; and internalizati

Social stress is widely recognized for increasing ethanol consumption, an effect mediated by an enhanced neuroinflammatory response. High-fat diets (HFDs) alleviate stress and have been shown to reduce cocaine-seeking behavior, likely by serving as an alternative reinforcer. This study examines whether intermittent HFD administration following social defeat (SD) mitigates long-term increases in ethanol (EtOH) consumption and neuroinflammatory responses in adult male mice. Two intermittent HFD protocols were tested: HFD1 × 2 (one-hour access twice a week), and HFD2 × 3 (two-hour access three ti

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by affective instability and dysregulated behaviors (binge eating, fasting, self-induced vomiting) that disrupt bodily homeostasis. Mechanisms underlying dysregulation in BN are unclear, although altered reward responsivity, anticipatory processing of environmental cues, and interoception (detection and integration of body-state signals to regulate behavior) have been implicated in BN pathophysiology. We aimed to determine whether BN is associated with ineffectively predicting body state or integrating predicted experience with actual experience by examini

BACKGROUND: Youths with eating disorders (EDs) engaging in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) are at higher suicide risk because EDs and NSSI are associated with suicidality. However, epidemiologic data on NSSI lacks in the vulnerable group of youth ED inpatients.
METHODS: This retrospective chart review included patients up to 18 years of age with an ICD-10 diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, restricting type (AN-R), anorexia nervosa, binge-purge type (AN-BP), and bulimia nervosa (BN), treated at the child and adolescent inpatient department of the University Hospital in Berlin, Germany, between 1990

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex psychiatric disorder, which can lead to specific somatic complications. Undernutrition is a major diagnostic criteria of AN and it can be associated with several micronutrients deficiencies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determinate the prevalence of micronutrients deficiencies and to compare the differences between the two subtypes of AN (restricting type (AN-R) and binge-eating/purging type (AN-BP)).
METHODS: We report a large retrospective, monocentric study of patients that were hospitalized in a highly specialized AN inpatient unit betw

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and debilitating mental health condition that significantly impairs the quality of life. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly exposure and response prevention (ERP), is considered the gold standard, many patients remain symptomatic or find these approaches challenging due to emotional and cognitive barriers. Distress tolerance techniques (DTT), a component of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), have demonstrated efficacy in various conditions, including substance dependence, binge eating, and depression, by manag

Introduction Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a cluster B personality disorder that is characterized by altered perceptions of self-image, affect, and behavioral difficulties, especially a fear of being abandoned or rejected. Individuals with BPD engage in impulsive behaviors such as substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, self-harm, excessive spending, or binge eating. Beyond the individual level, BPD has a damaging effect on the integrity and safety of societies. Subjects with borderline personality disorder have various types of traumatic childhood experiences and social exclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Severe obesity is the fastest growing pediatric subgroup of excess weight levels. Psychological dysregulation (i.e., impairments in regulating cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral processes) has been associated with obesity and poorer weight loss outcomes. The present study explored associations of dysregulation with weight-related variables among adolescent and young adult (AYA) females with severe obesity.
METHODS: Fifty-four AYA females with severe obesity (MBMI = 48.71 kg/m(2); Mage = 18.29, R = 15-21 years; 59.3% White) completed self-report measures of psychological dysreg

Background and Objectives: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are frequent non-motor complications of Parkinson's disease (PD), usually related to dopaminergic therapy. Uric acid (UA) has been studied as a biomarker of PD severity and has been linked to impulsivity in non-PD populations. However, its association with ICDs in patients with PD (PwPs) has not been investigated. This study aimed to assess the relationship between serum UA levels, the uric acid to creatinine ratio (UA/Cr), and ICD prevalence in PwPs. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 172 PwPs hospitalized for follow-up or treatment

Opioid transmission and dysregulated prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity have both been implicated in the inhibitory-control deficits associated with addiction and binge-type eating disorders. What remains unknown, however, is whether endogenous opioid transmission within the PFC modulates inhibitory control. Here, we compared intra-PFC opioid manipulations with a monoamine manipulation (d-amphetamine), in two sucrose-reinforced tasks: progressive ratio (PR), which assays the motivational value of an incentive, and differential reinforcement of low response rates (DRLs), a test of inhibitory cont

INTRODUCTION: The aetiology of eating disorders (EDs) is complex, involving an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Children at familial high risk (FHR) for EDs demonstrate increased risk of developing EDs themselves compared with children born to parents without EDs, though the majority remain unaffected. The BLOOM study is an FHR study that aims to identify biological, neurocognitive and psychosocial risk and protective pathways to EDs. Results of this study will help identify trait markers of EDs, inform targeted preventive intervention strategies and clarify how to mitigate gene

BACKGROUND: The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion reports that mental health disorders are one of the most "common causes of disability," affecting 18.1% of adults in the United States. This case series examines the use of diet, targeted nutrient supplementation with a focus on amino acids, and lifestyle interventions for the management of mood-related symptoms as a treatment option.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: The three cases included a personalized amino acid therapy protocol, nutrient cofactor supplementation, and diet and lifestyle recommendations. Clinical assessment questionnair

This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the use of neuroenhancers, the motivations and factors associated with their use in French and Romanian university students. Students from two universities in France (Rouen and Opal Coast University) and one in Romania (Cluj-Napoca) were asked to complete a self-administered anonymous questionnaire, either online or on paper, about the use of three different categories of substance: Prescription drugs (methylphenidate, modafinil, and beta-blockers), drugs of abuse (alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and amphetamines), and soft enhancers (coffee, vitamins,

BACKGROUND: Compulsive behaviors provoked by dopamine agonists often go undetected in clinical series, especially if not specifically inquired about.
AIM: To determine the frequency of compulsive behaviors in a Parkinson's disease (PD) clinic where agonist-treated patients were routinely asked about such aberrant behaviors.
METHODS: We utilized the Mayo Health Science Research database to ascertain all PD patients taking a dopamine agonist over a two year period (2007-2009). All were seen by a Mayo-Rochester Movement Disorders Staff specialist who routinely inquired about behavior compulsion

Substance-use disorders are major accelerators of cardiometabolic disease, yet this dimension remains insufficiently recognized within addiction care. Individuals with substance-use disorders frequently exhibit hypertension, adverse lipid profiles, visceral adiposity, metabolic syndrome, chronic low-grade inflammation and autonomic imbalance, contributing to markedly elevated cardiovascular morbidity and premature mortality. The recent European Society of Cardiology Clinical Consensus Statement on mental health and cardiovascular disease highlights this gap and calls for structured cardiometab

IMPORTANCE: The use of stimulant medications has expanded substantially beyond the traditional treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to encompass a variety of other clinical conditions. Understanding the safety of these medications is important as their use increases across diverse patient populations.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety of stimulant medications as reported in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) investigating methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine, and other amphetamines.
DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from July 1, 2024, through Feb

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and its related social restrictions have profoundly affected people's mental health. It can be assumed that symptomatic behaviors and mental health of individuals with eating disorders (ED) deteriorated during this time. To get a thorough overview, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis with the following aims: First, to provide a comprehensive overview of symptoms of ED during the COVID-19-related confinement; second, to identify psychological mechanisms which impacted the emergence and maintenance of ED symptoms; third, to describe changes of dai

BACKGROUND: Behavioural disorders associated with compulsive use of dopaminergic drugs for Parkinson's disease (PD) such as dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) and impulse control disorders (ICDs) may have devastating consequences and are challenging to manage. Whether or not such patients should undergo subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) is controversial. A few case reports and small series have reported contrasting effects of STN DBS on dopamine misuse and ICDs, while a recent prospective study found clear beneficial effects of STN DBS on these disorders.
