The Lidcombe Program is a well-established and efficacious treatment for early stuttering, but little is currently known about its mechanisms of action. The present report explores the possibility that inter-turn speaker latency might be associated with such mechanisms of action. Inter-turn speaker latency was measured in audio recordings of children, parents, and clinicians conversing, taken during Lidcombe Program treatment consultations. Five clinicians reduced their inter-turn speaker latencies during clinical consultations when they were speaking to children, in comparison with when they

The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a parent-report screening tool used to measure parents' perceptions of children's functional intelligibility. This tool has been translated into over 60 languages and found to have a good reliability and validity. The purpose of the current study was to translate the ICS into Sinhala (the ICS-SIN), the main language spoken by the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka, and to validate it with both typically developing (TD) children and children with repaired cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). The translation process followed the forward-backward-forward method.

Typically developing children are variable in their speech production with decreasing variability indicating mastery of speech. Excessive variability which does not change over time may be an indication of unstable motor plans as often seen in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Dynamic Systems Theory (DST) provides a framework for understanding the role of variability in speech development and disorder. There are few studies that explore the impact of therapy on speech variability. This work explores the impact of therapy on perceptual speech production variability. It is a post-

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a paediatric motor speech disorder. We investigated the lexical tone perception and production abilities of children with CAS and the relationships between the two. Three children with CAS, aged between 3;7 and 5;8, were given the Cantonese Tone Identification Test (CANTIT) and the Hong Kong Cantonese Articulation Test (HKCAT) for assessment of tone perception and production, respectively. Accuracy and error patterns were investigated based on their performance on the two tests. Correlation analysis was performed on children's perception and production scor

This multiple case pilot study explored how nonword imitation influences articulatory and segmental performance in children with and without speech disorder. Eight children, ages 4- to 8-years-old, participated, including two children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), four children with phonological disorder (PD), and two children with typical development (TD). Tokens included two complexity types and were presented in random order. Minimal feedback was provided and nonwords were never associated with a referent. Kinematic and transcription data were analysed to examine articulatory vari

Diagnostics in bilingual children is challenging, due to an overlap of production patterns in typically developing (TD) bilingual children and monolingual children with specific language impairment (SLI). To screen bilingual children effectively, the Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings (LITMUS) tools were developed in an international project. The present study tests three of these tools for their suitability and diagnostic accuracy for early second language learners (eL2) of German, aged six to eight years. The study focuses on the timing in first language (L1) TD acquisition

In this study, the early expressive vocabulary development was investigated in a group of children with moderate hearing loss (HL). Size and development of expressive vocabulary from 18 30 months were analyzed and compared to a group of children with normal hearing (NH). For the children with HL, the impact of auditory variables on number of words were examined. The relationship of early consonant production to number of words produced of both groups were examined and the phonological complexity of reported words was compared between the groups. The results showed that children with HL (n = 8)

Previous investigations on sentence production in English-speaking individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have yielded mixed conclusions based on their findings. While some studies found comparable sentence complexity between speakers with TBI and control speakers, others reported more syntactic and lexical errors, reduced sentence complexity, and erroneous word order transpositions in the sentence production of speakers with TBI. These contradictory findings could possibly be due to the use of language measures that were less sensitive to subtle syntactic impairments among speakers wit

The purpose of the current research was to compare the lexical-grammatical skills of two-year-old children with and without repaired cleft palate (CP), accounting for the effect of variables such as vocabulary size at 18 months of age, maternal education level, and gender. Participants included 52 children with CP and 25 typically developing (TD) children. The CDI-WS was employed to measure vocabulary and grammatical skills. Significant differences were observed between the CP and TD groups with respect to the number of words, word forms (irregular nouns and verbs), word endings (overuse of pl

Previous research has established that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have difficulties producing inflectional morphology, in particular, finiteness marking. However, other categories of inflectional morphology, such as possessive 's nominal inflection remain relatively unexplored. Analyses of the characteristics for marking inflection, such as allomorphic categories, may increase our understanding of patterns within disordered grammar to inform the design of interventions and target selection. Data from n = 30 early school-aged children (M = 75 months, SD = 3.38, range =

In the present study, hearing sensitivity in children with speech sound disorder (SSD) is scrutinized. Middle ear function (wideband tympanometry and acoustic stapedial reflexes, ASR) and inner ear function (audiometric thresholds in the conventional1-8 kHz and extended10-16 kHz high frequency (EHF) range, and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs2-10 kHz) were investigated. Hearing results were analyzed in relation to speech discrimination of phonemic contrasts (quiet and in noise conditions) and reproduction. Thirty-two children with SSD and 41 children with typical development (T

The present study aimed to analyse the narrative competence of a group of Italian children with a bilateral cochlear implant (CI) implanted before 30 months of age. Participants were ten children with CI (aged from 42 to 83 months) and two control groups of typically hearing children one-to-one paired by sex, non-verbal reasoning, and chronological or hearing age. A story generation task, specifically developed to assess narrative skills in children (i.e., the Narrative Competence Task) was used to evaluate both macrostructural and microstructural features of the children's narratives. The present study investigated the sensitivity and specificity of the English Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) and the ICS-Jamaican Creole (ICS-JC) translation with bilingual preschool-aged Jamaican children. Participants in this study were 262 English-Jamaican Creole simultaneous bilingual children (aged 3;3 to 6;3, M = 4;11, SD = 7.8). The ICS and ICS-JC were administered to parents in auditory form, rather than written form. Although recent evidence has demonstrated the validity and reliability of the ICS as an assessment tool in various languages, further data are needed to determine

The rhotic sound /r/ is one of the latest-emerging sounds in English, and many children receive treatment for residual errors affecting /r/ that persist past the age of 9. Auditory-perceptual abilities of children with residual speech errors are thought to be different from their typically developing peers. This study examined auditory-perceptual acuity in children with residual speech errors affecting /r/ and the relation of these skills to production accuracy, both before and after a period of treatment incorporating visual biofeedback. Identification of items along an /r/-/w/ continuum was

Previous research has shown that the production of third-person singular accusative object clitics (3DO clitics) might be taxing in Italian-speaking pre-school children with cochlear implants (CIs). We investigated this topic by assessing 3DO clitic production in 14 children with an average age of 8 years, who had received CI between age 1 and 4. The first goal of the study was to analyze whether school-aged children with CIs exhibit atypical behavior in 3DO clitic production. The second goal was to analyze whether children with CIs are prone to agreement errors in case of gender mismatch betw

Research shows that a substantial proportion of children with Down syndrome (DS) also meet the clinical criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with this dual diagnosis display a linguistic profile that includes significant language delays and language impairments which often differ from the impairments observed in each developmental disability (DD) separately. Given the challenges observed with language acquisition for children with DS-ASD, concerns might be raised regarding the outcomes and suitability of a bilingual environment for children with this dual diagnosis specificall

Most children born with cleft palate (CP) or cleft lip and palate (CL/P) have velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), some degree of hypernasal resonance, articulation disorders and laryngeal dysphonia. Combination of different CL/P specific problems may mask laryngeal dysphonia and therefore, it may remain undiagnosed and untreated by clinicians. The research aimed to study the effect of VPI on voice quality in Estonian CL/P children. We included 18 CL/P and 79 healthy children. Combination of objective (Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP)) and subjective (Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI)

Individuals with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) have motor deficits in systems beyond speech and also global deficits in sequential processing, consistent with cerebellar dysfunction. We investigated the cerebellar hypothesis of CAS in 18 children and adolescents with CAS, 11 typical controls, an adult with a probable CAS history, and an adult with a history of a cerebellar stroke. Compared to the controls, children and adolescents with CAS had the greatest difficulty with rapid syllable repetition when alternating between two different syllables types, less difficulty when switching among

The aim of the study is the analysis of the error-repairs of people with cluttering (PWC), whether they repair their speech errors similarly to control speakers or not. Error-repairs were analysed in spontaneous speech samples of 13 PWC and 13 age- and sex-matched control speakers. Error-to-cutoff time, duration of the editing phase, and error-to-repair time were measured. Strategies of repairs (point of interruption, proportion of delays, and types of editing terms and phases) were also examined. Results of the two groups were compared. Results show that there are no differences between the t

Typically, young children diagnosed with specific language impairment (SLI; also called Developmental language disorder, DLD) have been found to show weakness in narrative development, and such weakness has been judged to be unlikely to resolve over time. However, developmental outcomes for adolescents with a prior SLI diagnosis have not been thoroughly studied. In particular, studies on the evaluative aspects of narratives of such persons are almost non-existent. Here we examine the question whether narrative evaluation of adolescents formerly diagnosed with SLI remains problematic into adole
