The Montreal Protocol is working, but it will take several decades for ozone to return to 1980 levels. The atmospheric concentrations of ozone depleting substances are decreasing, and ozone column amounts are no longer decreasing. Mid-latitude ozone is expected to return to 1980 levels before mid-century, slightly earlier than predicted previously. However, the recovery rate will be slower at high latitudes. Springtime ozone depletion is expected to continue to occur at polar latitudes, especially in Antarctica, in the next few decades. Because of the success of the Protocol, increases in UV-B

Previous studies have shown that short-wavelength blue visible light induces retinal injury and may be a risk factor for age related macular degeneration. A2E is a blue light absorbing retinal chromophore that accumulates with age. Our previous in vitro studies have determined that, although A2E itself has a low phototoxic efficiency, the oxidation products of A2E that are formed in the presence of visible light can contribute to observed retinal pigment epithelial photodamage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of blue light on retinal phototoxicity and its relationship

Photoisomerization of a coordinating, photochromic dithienylethene bearing a pyridine and a methylpyridinium group was investigated as a means to reversibly modulate the luminescence from CdSe-ZnS core-shell quantum dots. Resonance energy transfer and electron transfer are both plausible quenching mechanisms based on an increase in the spectral donor-acceptor overlap and an anodic shift in the reduction potential accompanying the isomerization reaction of the dithienylethene photoswitch. Photochemical degradation of both the quantum dot and photochromic quencher was observed after repeated cyc

A new fluorescence "turn-on" nanosensor for carbonate determination was reported based on CdSe quantum dots (QDs) modified with thio ligands containing urea groups: N-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylcarbamoyl)-2-(o-tolyloxy)acetamide (AASH-CdSe QDs). The AASH-CdSe QDs were prepared through a ligand exchange process and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy. The synthesized AASH-CdSe QDs allowed a selective fluorescence "turn-on" response towards carbonate. Under optimal conditions, the relative fluorescen

Young and healthy-looking skin is a feature that is universally admired and considered attractive among humans. However, as we age, skin condition deteriorates due to a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors determined not only by genetics and physiological health but also by behaviour and lifestyle choice. As regards the latter, cumulative, repeated exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is linked intrinsically to the induction of specific types of skin cancer and the expression of cutaneous damage markers responsible for the majority of the visible signs of skin ageing. Here we re

This paper reports the evaluation of a new photosensitizer, Radachlorin in comparison with one of its well known components but used solely, Chlorin e6. The photodynamic properties, cell uptake and localisation of the 2 drugs were compared. In vitro studies were conducted on human adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) and lung carcinoma cell line (A549). Both dyes showed an absorption maximum between 640 and 650 nm, that were enhanced by serum, with a shifted maximum at 661 nm. In vitro, phototoxicities of Radachlorin and Chlorin e6 were nearly identical for HT29 and A549 cells. However, Radachlorin re

Measurements of anatomical UV exposure distribution were made using miniaturized polysulfone dosimeters over a four year period between 2005 and 2008 in Toowoomba, Australia (28 degrees S, 152 degrees E). Anatomical UV exposures were expressed relative to the horizontal plane ambient UV. The UV exposures were compared with existing data detailing the anatomical distribution of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and solar keratoses (SK). Surface UV exposures to unprotected skin surfaces have been presented for each of the face, neck, arm, hand and leg assessing a total of

The exposure of organisms to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is characterized by the climatology (annual cycle) and the variance (anomalies) of biologically-weighted irradiances at eight geographical locations in austral South America, from 1995-2002. The net effect of UVR on biological systems is a result of the balance of damage and repair which depends on intensity and duration of irradiance and is modulated by its variability. The emphasis in this study is on day-to-day variability, a time scale of importance to adaptive strategies that counteract UVR damage. The irradiances were weighted with

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of acrylonitrile (AN) on titanium dioxide in the gaseous phase was studied. AN readily undergoes photocatalytic degradation in a gas-solid system by using TiO(2) Degussa P25. The AN PCO volatile products, visible in the infrared spectra, included nitrogen dioxide, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, water, hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide. Longer contact time resulted in deeper oxidation of AN with decreasing hydrogen cyanide and increasing nitrogen dioxide content. The effect of temperature increasing from 60 to 130 degrees C was observed to be slightly negative

Bioluminescent (BL) proteins are a promising tool for diverse applications based on reporter gene technology thanks to their high sensitivity and range of linear response. Due to their widespread use in the environmental, medical and agro-food fields, there is a great need for new BL reporter proteins with improved characteristics to provide researches a wide range of suitable reporters. Few efforts have been made in this direction and further improvement of BL reporter features (e.g., thermostability, narrower emission bandwidth, emission at different wavelengths) tailored for specific applic

alpha-Bismuth oxides of specific surface areas of 1-3 m(2) g(-1) were prepared by three different methods and their visible light activity was tested in the photodegradation (lambda>or= 420 nm) of 4-chlorophenol. In method A, which led to powders of poor to moderate photoactivity, the starting materials BiONO(3), Bi(NO(3))(3) x 5H(2)O, (BiO)(2)CO(3), and BiOCl were annealed at 500 degrees C without any pretreatment. In method B the salt (BiO)(2)CO(3) was washed with water and subsequently calcined at 450 degrees C affording a very active powder. In method C the salts BiONO(3), Bi(NO(3))(3) x 5

A simple identification method of L-tyrosine (Tyr) and L-cysteine (Cys) using gemini surfactant coated CdSe quantum dots by using a fluorescent spectroscopic technique is proposed. The gemini surfactant modified QDs show a selective fluorescence response between Tyr and Cys by addition of p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (pSCA). The CdSe QDs coated with gemini surfactant [C(12)H(25)N(+)(CH(3))(2)(CH(2))(4)(CH(3))(2)N(+)C(12)H(25)].2Br(-) (GS) obviously responds to Tyr. While in the presence of pSCA, it shows selectivity to Cys due to the cooperation of gemini surfactant coated QDs (GS-QDs) and pSCA. U

Semiconductor quantum dots show promise as alternatives to organic dyes for biological labelling because of their bright and stable photoluminescence. The typical quantum dots is CdSe because colloidal synthesis for nanocrystals of this semiconductor is well established. CdSe is usually passivated with zinc sulfide. While the cytotoxicity of bulk CdSe is well documented, questions about (CdSe)ZnS potential toxicity and behaviour in vivo remain unanswered. The distribution and stability of (CdSe)ZnS quantum dots in Wistar line rats' digestive tract were investigated. Hydrophobic quantum dots we

The effect of different amines on the fluorescence of quantum dots has been discussed in the literature but the mechanism involved is not fully understood. We have studied the interaction of core CdSe quantum dots of different sizes and core-shell CdSe quantum dots with tertiary amines, such as aliphatic amines (triethylamine) and bicyclic amines (DABCO and quinuclidine), using fluorescence techniques. Fluorescence quantum yield decreases with increasing concentration of the amine following a linear Stern-Volmer behaviour (Kq=80-330 M(-1)), but relatively small changes were observed in the flu

The interaction of blepharismin (BP) and oxyblepharismin (OxyBP) with bovine alpha-crystallin (BAC) has been studied both by steady-state and femtosecond spectroscopy, with the aim of assessing the possible phototoxicity of these compounds toward the eye tissues. We showed that these pigments form with BAC potentially harmful ground-state complexes, the dissociation constants of which have been estimated to be 6 +/- 2 micromol L(-1) for OxyBP and 9 +/- 4 micromol L(-1) for BP. Irradiation with steady-state visible light of solutions of blepharismins in the presence of BAC proved to induce a qu

The photochemical reactivity of beta-lapachone (1), nor-beta-lapachone (2) and beta-lapachone 3-sulfonic acid (3) has been examined by laser flash photolysis. Excitation (lambda = 266 nm) of degassed solutions of , in acetonitrile or dichloromethane, resulted in the formation of detectable transients with absorption maxima at 300, 380 and 650 nm. These transients, with lifetimes of 5.0 micros, were quenched by beta-carotene at a diffusion-controlled rate constant and assigned to the triplet excited states of 1-3. Addition of hydrogen donors, such as 2-propanol, 1,4-cyclohexadiene, 4-methoxyphe

Here we describe the detection and identification of a yellow chlorophyll catabolite (Cj-YCC) in fresh extracts of senescent leaves of Cercidiphyllum japonicum. In addition, we report its partial synthesis by oxidation of Cj-NCC-1, the major (colourless) "nonfluorescent" chlorophyll catabolite (NCC) found in degreened leaves of C. japonicum. The spectroscopic analysis and structural characterization indicated Cj-YCC to be a simple dehydrogenation product of Cj-NCC-1 (by formal removal of a hydrogen atom at the C(20)- and C(1)-positions). Indeed, NCCs are easily oxidized and were first called "

An electrometric technique was used to investigate the generation of a photovoltage (Deltapsi) by Mn-depleted spinach photosystem II (PS II) core particles incorporated into liposomes. In the presence of MnCl2, the fast kinetically unresolvable phase of Deltapsi generation, related to electron transfer between the redox-active tyrosine YZ and the primary plastoquinone acceptor QA was followed by an additional electrogenic phase (tau approximately 20 micros, approximately 5% of the phase attributed to YZoxQA-). The latter phase was ascribed to the transfer of an electron from the Mn, bound to t

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is emerging as a therapeutic modality in the clinical management of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). The efficacy of PDT against CL has been demonstrated previously with aminolevulinic acid, although the prolonged terms of therapy were less than ideal, and the search for new photosensitizers (PS) is ongoing. However, phenothiaziniums have demonstrated high parasiticidal effects in vitro. The subject of our investigation is the in vivo activity of two PS, 5-ethylamino-9-diethylaminobenzo[a]phenoselenazinium chloride (EtNBSe) and (3,7-Bis(N,N-dibutylamino) phenothiazinium
