OBJECTIVE: To justify the application of medialization thyroplasty in Chinese patients with symptomatic cancer-related unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP).
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective chart review from February 2000 to March 2006.
RESULTS: Eighty-seven Chinese patients undergoing medialization thyroplasty for UVFP were included; there were no significant differences between the cancer-related and benign groups in terms of the speech and swallowing rehabilitation outcome and the perioperative complication rate (P > 0.05). BACKGROUND: The use of artificial chords for the replacement of diseased mitral valve chordae and the correction of anterior and posterior leaflet prolapse is well described, although it is infrequently applied because of technical challenges.
METHODS: A simplified approach to attaching the new chords to a single papillary muscle base within the left ventricle has been reported, and we present a series of 13 patients with moderate-severe mitral regurgitation (MR) who underwent chordal replacement using this improved technique.

The formation of an aneurysm in the aorta or pulmonary artery is a dangerous potential complication of surgical and angioplasty procedures involving these vessels. Treatment using covered stents has emerged as an effective alternative to surgery and the use of conventional stents. The authors report on 2 patients who were treated successfully by the implantation of covered stents in the aorta and pulmonary artery following angioplasty and surgery, respectively. We discuss the mechanisms of aneurysm formation and the efficacy and limitations of using covered stents in such patients.

We present a case of extra-anatomic axillo-mesenteric reconstruction for chronic mesenteric ischemia. Endovascular access and retrograde bypass options were prohibited by severe aortoiliac occlusive disease. Standard antegrade bypass was impossible because of the presence of a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. This unusual method of mesenteric reconstruction is a robust and viable option for patients with challenging anatomy and multiple comorbidities that preclude traditional endovascular and open surgical options.

We assessed outcomes in nickel allergic patients treated with percutaneous interatrial shunt device closure with the Helex device. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine if femorofemoral bypass grafting is an effective operation for unilateral iliac occlusive disease, and to assess for factors that may predict a poorer outcome. A retrospective review was conducted of cases identified from a prospective audit database.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the value and complications of direct graft puncture in conducting interventional procedures in synthetic vascular bypass grafts.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 65 direct graft punctures in 50 patients undergoing a variety of interventional vascular procedures. In two patients the grafts were found to be infected and the procedures abandoned.

Fifty-six patients who had undergone surgery for unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) were reviewed retrospectively. The etiologies; indications for surgery; timing of onset, diagnosis and surgery; complications; and survival rates are presented.
