Parastrongyloides trichosuri is a nematode parasite of Australian brushtail possums that has an alternative free-living life cycle which can be readily maintained indefinitely in a laboratory setting. The ability to maintain this parasite in a free-living cycle and induce it to parasitism at the free-living L1 stage makes this an excellent model for the study of genes associated with parasitism. A 70kD protein from infective larvae of P. trichosuri that appears to be immunogenic in infected possums has been identified as a heat shock protein (Hsp)70 homologue. The complete gene for Pt-Hsp70 wa

INTRODUCTION: The use of diverse diagnostic methods in the absence of a definitive gold standard makes it challenging to determine the most appropriate test for diagnosing human intestinal nematode infections (HINIs), particularly across various clinical settings with varying endemicity. The ideal diagnostic method should be feasible, cost-effective, and accurate. This review evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), comparing them to the Kato-Katz (KK) and flotation methods for the detection of ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infection, the Baermann

Background: Despite its relatively low incidence of associated diseases, Human T-cell Leukemia Virus-1 (HTLV-1) infection was reported to carry a significant risk of mortality in several endemic areas. HTLV-1-associated diseases, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraperesis (HAM/TSP), as well as frequent coinfections with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and Strongyloides stercoralis were associated to increased morbidity and mortality of HTLV-1 infection. Objective: To determine the mortality rate and its assoc

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis, respectively, are important helminthic diseases worldwide as well as in our country. Epidemiological studies conducted in Turkey showed that the prevalence of CE is 291-585/100.000. It has also been showed that the seroprevalence of AE is 3.5%. For the diagnosis of CE and AE, radiological (ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance) and serological methods, in addition to clinical findings, are being used. The definitive diagnosis relies on pathological e

The protozoan Giardia duodenalis is a mammalian-infecting parasite that produces diarrhoea and malabsorption in its hosts. A survey to investigate canine infections with G. duodenalis in Romania was undertaken between June 2008 and December 2009. The objectives of the study were to (i) estimate the prevalence of infection in different dog populations (kennels, shelters, shepherd, household) using microscopy and a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test kit; (ii) to establish the level of agreement and characteristics of the tests; and (iii) to identify risk factor

Untreated tropical parasitic co-infections appear to speed the progression of HIV-1 disease. However, to date, there have been few studies conducted in resource limited settings to ascertain the interaction of parasitic co-infection where HIV/AIDS management largely depends on CD4+ T lymphocyte cells counts and WHO clinical staging. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of parasites, their association with CD4+ T lymphocyte cells changes and clinical manifestation of HIV-infection in patients attending HIV/AIDS management clinics in Tanzania. Adult HIV-infected patients registering for

Separate controlled trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two formulations of moxidectin (1% non-aqueous injectable solution and 0.5% pour-on (Cydectin) against larval or adult stages of Oesophagostomum radiatum and Trichuris discolor infecting cattle. Fifty-three strongylate-free dairy breed steer calves were obtained from commercial sources. After a brief acclimation period, calves were randomly divided into two pools to evaluate the efficacy of the moxidectin formulations against targeted larval (n = 27 calves) or adult (n = 26 calves) parasites. Calves in the larvacidal trial w

INTRODUCTION: Determining the cause of eosinophilia in patients returning from the tropics continues to present a diagnostic challenge. The history, symptoms and degree of eosinophilia are often poor predictors of eventual diagnosis, but helminths are an important cause. The current British Infection Association recommendations use travel history to guide investigation of eosinophilia. However the global burden of helminth disease and travel patterns have changed over the last 3 decades and guidelines based on previous epidemiology need to be reviewed in the light of current data.

BACKGROUND: Searching for new effective drugs against human and animal toxoplasmosis we decided to test the anti-Toxoplasma potential of phytoecdysteroids (α-ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone) characterized by the pleiotropic activity on mammalian organisms including the enhancement of host's anti-parasitic defence. This objective was accomplished by the in vitro evaluation of T. gondii growth in phytoecdysteroid-treated immunocompetent cells of selected hosts: humans and two strains of inbred mice with genetically determined different susceptibility to toxoplasmosis.

The larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis are involved in parasitic diseases in humans: cystic echinococcosis (CE) ("hydatid disease") and alveolar echinococcosis (AE), respectively. Both diseases and parasites have tight links with allergy because of the immunological characteristics that contribute to maintain the larvae in their human host as well as their potential in inducing clinical anaphylactic reactions in some patients. Clinical observations in patients and data obtained from mass screenings in various countries have identified both forms of echinococcosis as

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are common. Indeed, more than 1 billion people are affected, mainly in the developing world where poverty prevails and hygiene behavior, water supply, and sanitation are often deficient. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and the two hookworm species, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, are the most prevalent STHs. The estimated global burden due to hookworm disease, ascariasis, and trichuriasis is 22.1, 10.5, and 6.4 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), respectively. Furthermore, an estimated 30-100 million people are inf

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections and HIV/AIDS have been the major public health problems and remain a vital cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Both problems are linked in a vicious cycle. The magnitude of intestinal parasites was prevalent among people living with HIV/AIDS even in the HAART era. However, the pertinent risk factors associated with intestinal parasites among HIV/AIDS patients were not well investigated in Ethiopia particularly at Butajira town. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and associate

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by larva stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, is one of the lethal parasitic diseases of man and a major public health problem in many countries in the northern hemisphere. When the living conditions and habits in Turkey were considered in terms of relation with the life cycle of the parasite, it was suggested that AE has been much more common than reported mainly from the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Since in vitro serologic diagnosis tests with high specificity for AE have not been used in our country, most of the cases with liver lesions were misd

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a human retrovirus that causes a lifelong infection. Several diseases, including an aggressive form of leukaemia, have been designated as associated with HTLV-1, whereby having HTLV-1 is a necessary condition for diagnosis. Beyond these diseases, there is uncertainty about other health effects of HTLV-1. We aimed to synthesise evidence from epidemiological studies on associations between health outcomes and HTLV-1.
METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched Embase, MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process, and Global He

Research of human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1)-associated diseases is mostly focused on inflammatory and lymphoproliferative disorders. However, the immunosuppressive consequences of HTLV-1 infection are frequently ignored. In developing countries where exposure to parasitic and other tropical diseases is frequent, the burden of disease is significantly increased by opportunistic infections. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a CD4 T-cell subset capable of suppressing effector responses. During HTLV-1 infection, CD4+Foxp3+ cells are increased in HTLV-1-associated leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL)

BACKGROUND: Parasitic nematodes of vertebrates impose a substantial burden on human and animal health; however, advanced diagnostic tools for the accurate characterisation of these parasites are scarce. One promising but nascent approach is metabarcoding, which enables the simultaneous characterisation of all parasitic nematodes in a sample, termed the nemabiome. However, earlier iterations of this approach could not detect socioeconomically important nematodes such as those in the genera Strongyloides and Trichuris. Therefore, we aimed to develop a novel nemabiome method capable of detecting

BACKGROUND: Consuming contaminated raw vegetables and fruits is one of the primary means of parasite transmission to humans. Periodic monitoring of parasitic contamination in these food items is a crucial step in preventing the spread of parasitic disease in the community. This study was aimed at detecting intestinal parasitic contamination caused by consuming raw vegetables and fruits sold in three open-air markets and its associated factors in peri-urban areas of Jimma City, Oromia, Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on fruits and vegetables collected from three peri-u
