An HIV intervention tailored for black young men who have sex with men in the House Ball Community.

Black young men who have sex with men (BYMSM) are the group most disproportionately impacted by HIV in the USA and most in need of efficacious interventions to address community-level factors that increase their vulnerability to HIV. The House Ball Community (HBC) is a distinct social network within the larger BYMSM community that may be particularly vulnerable to social norms and stigma around HIV. This study tailored an evidence-based, community-level popular opinion leader (OL) intervention for use within the HBC. The intervention, called Promoting Ovahness through Safer Sex Education (POSS

Measuring Stress, Socialization, and Smoking Behaviors Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Other Sexual and Gender Minority Adolescents (the Puff Break Research Study): Protocol for a Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent tobacco and nicotine use is a major public health concern, with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) adolescents showing disproportionately high use compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Research suggests factors such as socialization, stress, mood, and craving exacerbate tobacco and nicotine use. However, there is a dearth of knowledge of how these factors influence tobacco, nicotine, and cannabis use among LGBTQ+ adolescents in general and particularly on a momentary basis. OBJECTIVE: This study aims t

A core outcome set for research on masculinizing genital gender-affirming surgery: international consensus results from the GenderCOS project.

BACKGROUND: Masculinizing genital gender-affirming surgery (gGAS) for transgender and gender diverse people encompasses a complex, heterogenous, and modular set of procedures. To enable evidence-based decision-making or meta-analysis, a uniformity of outcome research is needed. Currently, this is hindered by non-standardized outcome reporting. This study aims to develop a core outcome set (COS) for research on masculinizing gGAS to address this issue. METHODS: An international, multidisciplinary study steering group was established, consisting of 16 professional experts (PE) and lived experie

HIV self-testing in India: implementation and qualitative evaluation of a web-based programme with virtual counsellor support.

INTRODUCTION: To achieve epidemic control of infectious diseases, engaging higher-burden populations with accessible diagnostic services is critical. HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a promising option. METHODS: We implemented an online HIVST programme for key populations across India. Eligible clients were 18 years or older, self-reported a negative or unknown HIV status and reported not taking antiretroviral therapy. Clients who reported a prior HIV diagnosis were not eligible to receive an HIVST kit. HIVST clients received kits via courier or in person at pre-determined pick-up points supported

The rising tide of HIV among young men who have sex with men in Brazil: insights from the Conectad@s study.

BACKGROUND: Young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Latin America experience disproportionately high rates of HIV. While new case numbers have stabilised in other demographics, the incidence of HIV in this particular group continues to rise. We estimated the prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) and identified correlates of new HIV diagnoses among YMSM in Brazil. METHODS: Conectad@s was a respondent-driven sampling-based study to recruit and engage YMSM in HIV prevention and treatment services in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (November 2021-October 20

Associations of gender identity with sexual behaviours, social stigma and sexually transmitted infections among adults who have sex with men in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority populations are disproportionately affected by the global syndemic of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We hypothesized that transgender women (TGW) and non-binary individuals in Nigeria have more STIs than cis-gender men who have sex with men (cis-MSM), and that experiences of stigma and sexual practices differ between these three groups. METHODS: From 2013 to 2020, TRUST/RV368 enrolled adults assigned male sex at birth who reported anal sex with men in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria. Participants were tested for STIs and completed quest

Strategies to Treat and Prevent HIV in the United States for Adolescents and Young Adults: Protocol for a Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Over 20% of HIV diagnoses in the United States are among youth aged 12-24 years. Furthermore, youth have the lowest rates of uptake and adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) medications and are least aware of their HIV status. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to design a set of interrelated studies to promote completion of each step of the HIV Prevention Continuum by uninfected youth at high risk (YHR), as well as completion of steps in the Treatment Continuum by youth living with HIV (YLH). METHODS: Gay, bisexual, and transgender youth; homeless youth; substance-abusing youth; youth wit

Incidence and risk factors of C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae and syphilis among a cohort of urban Canadian gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, 2017-2023: informing the potential impact of doxycycline prophylaxis.

OBJECTIVES: Doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) has emerged as an efficacious strategy to reduce Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae) and syphilis (sexually transmitted infections (STIs)) among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM). There is a need to identify prescribing criteria that maximise the number of STIs averted while minimising excessive use. DESIGN: In this prospective longitudinal cohort study with repeated measures and biobehavioural data collection, participants completed a questionnaire and tested for S

Longitudinal Analysis of Syndemic Psychosocial Problems Predicting HIV Risk Behavior Among a Multicity Prospective Cohort of Sexually Active Young Transgender Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, young transgender women (YTW) contend with exceptionally high risks of HIV infection. Cross-sectional studies have suggested that co-occurring epidemics or "syndemics" of psychosocial problems may accelerate HIV acquisition and transmission through elevated sexual risk behavior among transgender women. We aimed to examine how a syndemic of 7 psychosocial problems potentiates HIV sexual risk behavior among a multicity, longitudinal cohort of sexually active YTW in the United States. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2015, 233 YTW from Boston, MA, and Chicago, IL, completed behav

The psychologist's role in transgender-specific care with U.S. veterans.

Psychologists are integral to the care of transgender individuals. This article details the many roles for psychologists in transgender-specific care, including diagnosing and treating gender dysphoria; providing treatment for comorbid conditions; referring to medical services such as gender confirmation surgeries, voice modification, and cross-sex hormone therapies; serving as consultants within health care systems; and advocating for addressing barriers in systems in which transgender individuals live and work. Transgender veterans have unique experiences and vulnerabilities related to their

An eHealth Intervention for Promoting COVID-19 Knowledge and Protective Behaviors and Reducing Pandemic Distress Among Sexual and Gender Minorities: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial (#SafeHandsSafeHearts).

BACKGROUND: Existing data on COVID-19 disparities among vulnerable populations portend excess risk for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and other persons outside of heteronormative and cisgender identities (ie, LGBT+). Owing to adverse social determinants of health, including pervasive HIV and sexual stigma, harassment, violence, barriers in access to health care, and existing health and mental health disparities, sexual and gender minorities in India and Thailand are at disproportionate risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe disease. Despite global health disparities among LGBT+ p

COVID-19 in people living with HIV: Clinical implications of dynamics of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2.

Little evidence on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in people living with HIV (PLWH) is currently available. We reported clinical and viroimmunological data of all HIV-positive patients admitted to our center with COVID-19 from March 1 to May 12, 2020. Overall, five patients were included: all were virologically-suppressed on antiretroviral therapy and CD4+ count was greater than 350 cell/mm3 in all but two patients. Although all patients had evidence of pneumonia on admission, only one developed respiratory failure. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA was never
