The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music as a trauma-informed approach in eating disorder treatment: theoretical framework and case illustrations.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe and complex mental health conditions with high mortality, significant psychiatric comorbidity, and increasing global prevalence. ED behaviours (e.g., restriction, bingeing, purging) may function as adaptive strategies for affect regulation, management of trauma-related distress, and avoidance of embodied experience. While trauma-informed care emphasises safety, empowerment, and relational attunement, trauma in EDs is often held somatically and may remain inaccessible through verbal therapies alone. The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM)

Lorcaserin: A review of its preclinical and clinical pharmacology and therapeutic potential.

The selective 5-HT2C receptor agonist lorcaserin, in conjunction with lifestyle modification, was approved by the FDA in 2012 for weight management. It has been marketed in the US as Belviq® since 2013. This article provides a review of the preclinical and clinical pharmacology of lorcaserin, including its pharmacokinetic and safety profiles. Preclinical studies with lorcaserin initially focused on simple measures of food intake and body weight gain, but have now expanded to include studies on its effects on appetitive aspects of feeding behaviour and models of binge-eating. A significant numb

Changes in Body Composition in Anorexia Nervosa: Predictors of Recovery and Treatment Outcome.

The restoration of body composition (BC) parameters is considered to be one of the most important goals in the treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known about differences between AN diagnostic subtypes [restricting (AN-R) and binge/purging (AN-BP)] and weekly changes in BC during refeeding treatment. Therefore, the main objectives of our study were twofold: 1) to assess the changes in BC throughout nutritional treatment in an AN sample and 2) to analyze predictors of BC changes during treatment, as well as predictors of treatment outcome. The whole sample compr

NLRP6 Inflammasome Modulates Disease Progression in a Chronic-Plus-Binge Mouse Model of Alcoholic Liver Disease.

A considerable percentage of the population is affected by alcoholic liver disease (ALD). It is characterized by inflammatory signals from the liver and other organs, such as the intestine. The NLR family pyrin domain containing 6 (NLRP6) inflammasome complex is one of the most important inflammatory mediators. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel mouse model for ALD characterized by 8-week chronic-plus-binge ethanol administration and to investigate the role of NLRP6 inflammasome for intestinal homeostasis and ALD progression using Nlrp6-/- mice. We showed that chronic-plus-binge eth

Laparoscopic conversion of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass to biliopancreatic diversion.

BACKGROUND: This report describes the laparoscopic conversion of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) to biliopancreatic diversion (BPD). CASE REPORT: In January 1995, a 47-year-old woman with a body mass index (BMI) of 54 kg/m(2) benefited from a silicon ring vertical banded gastroplasty (SRVBG) for morbid obesity. She showed significant weight loss and reached a BMI of 30 kg/m(2). After 7 years, she experienced weight regain (BMI, 34.5 kg/m(2)), so a laparoscopic conversion to RYGBP was proposed. The patient again had a successful weight loss (BMI, 26 kg/m(2)), but 6 years later, she mentione

Extreme Risk-Taking Behaviors in Patients With Eating Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with eating disorders (EDs) engage in different self-inflicted at-risk behaviors, including suicide, attempted suicide and non-suicidal self-injury. Our aim was to describe the occurrence and underlying motivations of non-suicidal extreme risk-taking behaviors in patients with EDs. METHODS: Four cases from different treatment centers in Israel were analyzed. RESULTS: All patients were females hospitalized in inpatient settings because of long lasting anorexia nervosa (AN) with either binge/purge or purging episodes (AN-B/P/AN-P), including in most cases both self-induced

Rapid Innovation of Precision Psychiatry Interventions Using Dynamical Systems Modeling and Ecological Quasi-Experiments: Protocol for a Proof-of-Concept Study on Eating Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 83 million Americans experience mental illness, but fewer than 50% accessed past-year mental health services. Disseminable, potent mental health interventions are critically needed. Standalone digital interventions offer promise for improving clinical outcomes, but the efficacy of these interventions to date is modest, likely due in part to insufficient personalization to patient heterogeneity, varying context, and the stochastic nature of mental health symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to improve the efficacy of precision digital health interventions by developing real

Lack of efficacy of psychological and pharmacological treatments of disorders of eating behavior: neurobiological background.

BACKGROUND: Treatments of eating disorders result too often in partial psychological and physical remission, chronicization, dropout, relapse and death, with no fully known explanations for this failure. In order to clarify this problem, we conducted three studies to identify the biochemical background of cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy (CBT), individual psychology brief psychotherapy (IBPP), and psychotherapy-pharmacotherapy with CBT + olanzapine in anorexics (AN) and bulimics (BN) by measuring the levels of plasma homovanillic acid (HVA) for dopamine secretion, plasma 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy

Childhood risk factors for lifetime bulimic or compulsive eating by age 30 years in a British national birth cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether previously identified childhood risk factors for bulimia or compulsive eating (BCE) predict self-reported lifetime BCE by age 30 years in a prospective birth cohort. METHOD: Using data from the 1970 British Cohort Study at birth, 5, and 10 years, associations between 22 putative childhood risk factors and self-reported lifetime BCE at 30 years were examined, adjusting for sex and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: Only female sex (odds ratio (OR): 9.2; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.9-43.7; p = 0.005), low self-esteem (OR:2.9; 95%CI: 1.1-7.5; p = 0.03) and high mat

The role of metacognitive beliefs in impulse control disorders and addictive-like behaviors in Parkinson's disease: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are clinically relevant non-motor complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). ICDs include gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, binge eating, hobbyism/punding, and dopamine dysregulation syndrome. Although dopaminergic replacement therapies are a key risk factor, only a subgroup of treated patients develop ICDs, potentially suggesting that neuropsychological differences may contribute to interindividual variability. Dysfunctional Metacognitive Beliefs (MBs) have recently been associated with addictive behaviors in the general population, bu

Emotional reactivity to binge food and erotic cues in women with bulimia nervosa symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Studies on food cue reactivity have documented that altered responses to high-calorie food are associated with bulimic symptomatology, however, alterations in sexual motivations and behaviors are also associated clinical features in this population, which justify their inclusion as a research target. Here, we study responses to erotic cues-alongside food, neutral and aversive cues-to gain an understanding of specificity to food versus a generalized sensitivity to primary reinforcers. METHODS: We recorded peripheral psychophysiological indices -the startle reflex, zygomaticus, and

Fiction or not? Fifty Shades is associated with health risks in adolescent and young adult females.

BACKGROUND: No prior study has empirically characterized the association between health risks and reading popular fiction depicting violence against women. Fifty Shades--a blockbuster fiction series--depicts pervasive violence against women, perpetuating a broader social narrative that normalizes these types of risks and behaviors in women's lives. The present study characterized the association between health risks in women who read and did not read Fifty Shades; while our cross-sectional study design precluded causal determinations, an empirical representation of the health risks in women co

How are young people's mental health related to their sexual health and substance use? A systematic review of UK literature.

OBJECTIVES: The transition from childhood to adulthood is complex and presents challenges to young people's mental health. Mental health impacts and is impacted by a range of contextual and personal factors. Adolescence and young adulthood also coincide with increased experimentation with sex, sexuality and substance use. Addressing the mental health, sexual health and substance-use challenges experienced by young people therefore necessitates an understanding of how these elements relate to one another. By collecting and analysing existing literature, this review aims to identify associations
