Multi-flash campimetry is a computer-implemented technique used for the rapid assessment of temporal resolving power across the visual field. On the basis of previous reports that glaucoma patients exhibit impaired temporal sensitivity earlier than conventional perimetric field loss, the question of whether multi-flash campimetry might also be sensitive to the visual consequences of glaucoma was explored. A retrospective study of oculovisual assessment records of the population of three Ontario schools for deaf children assessed the differential effects of various causes of deafness on the prevalence of vision anomalies. Inherited deafness (ID) appears to be associated with the fewest visual anomalies. The magnification of the fundus image with various forms of funduscopy in ametropia and aphakia is poorly understood. This paper investigates these relationships. Direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and biomicroscopic funduscopy is included. Using forced vergence fixation disparity curves, proximal vergence was analyzed in two asymptomatic patient samples; 20 young adults (average age 25.2 +/- 4.71 years) and 20 presbyopes (average age 61.6 +/- 7.8 years). Visual acuity and reading performance of 178 partially sighted patients from a rehabilitation center were measured using a TV text display device. A linear relation was demonstrated between visual acuity and reading speed for patients with visual acuity values below 15% of the normal value. In this case report, a patient's visual loss associated with both cataract and senile macular degeneration is described. The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) as well as Retinometer and Visometer findings indicate that the additional visual loss over a year's time was lenticular, rather than retinal, in origin.

Thirty-five patients having paretic vertical strabismus were evaluated to determine which clinical parameters could best be used to differentiate congenital or early onset vertical strabismus from late onset vertical strabismus. Those patients with late onset deviations had a higher incidence of diplopia, a higher incidence of cyclodeviation, a higher incidence of compensatory head posture, and manifested larger vertical deviations in the primary position. However, the degree of incomitance, the prevalence of amblyopia, and the level of stereoacuity, did not distinguish the two patient groups.

This study was designed to compare brightness contributions of the two monocular inputs to the binocular visual system at three different levels of luminance adaptation in two groups of 15 subjects each. The fact that larger doses of phenothiazine medications cause more anterior chamber (lens and cornea) pigmentation in schizophrenics has been apparent since the introduction of these neuroleptic drugs nearly 30 years ago. The present study relates the extent of pigmentation to the dose and duration of phenothiazine administration in long-term schizophrenics. Albino mammals are known to suffer from misrouted optic projections and there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that human albinos have similar aberrant anatomical pathways. A simple clinical predictor of the amount of spectacle convex lens power that will be needed to correct the refractive error of an aphakic patient after cataract surgery is developed based on clinical measures of anterior corneal surface power (keratometer measurements) and axial length. Katz described a design for a postcataract spectacle lens with two aspheric surfaces. Previously, von Rohr and Jeffree had patented designs with similar optical properties, but using steeper lens forms than the Katz design. Twenty-one chronic alcoholics and 15 patients on tuberculostatic therapy were examined on repeated occasions using flash electroretinography (ERG), flash and pattern visual evoked responses (VER), visual fields, and flicker fusion thresholds. For both groups of visually symptomless patients, there is evidence of retinal abnormalities although more abnormal results are seen for the VER's. The results indicate that the mode of action of alcohol and tobacco differs from that of the tuberculostatic drugs. Kittens reared in the dark with their eyelids sutured postnatally on one side have developed hypermetropia in the closed eye (average: +2.75 D for the horizontal meridian). A 34-year-old black male presented with marked unilateral proptosis and pain in the left eye. Visual acuities were OD 6/7.5 (20/25) and OS 6/120 (20/400). His left eye was exophthalmic , had a Marcus Gunn pupil, and exposure keratitis. Sectorial pallor and a decreased Kestenbaum count were evident on the left optic nerve head. A tentative diagnosis of orbital meningioma was made and later confirmed. Optometric management of the patient, including appropriate screening tests and referrals, are discussed.
