Influence of surface modification and size of lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles on wheat seedlings.

In recent years, nanotechnology has found widespread applications in environmental monitoring, medical applications, plant fertilisers, cosmetics and others. Therefore, it is important to study nanomaterials' influence and subsequent risks to the environment and organisms (from production to disposal). Therefore, in the present study, the toxic effects of two surface modifications (poly (ethylene glycol)-neridronate, PEG-Ner and poly (acrylic acid), PAA) in comparison to unmodified, 26 nm- and 52 nm-sized core@shell lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs, NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+@NaYF4) wer

Poultry manure-derived microorganisms as a reservoir and source of antibiotic resistance genes transferred to soil autochthonous microorganisms.

Animal husbandry is increasing yearly due to the growing demand for meat and livestock products, among other reasons. To meet these demands, prophylactic antibiotics are used in the livestock industry (i.e., poultry farming) to promote health and stimulate animal growth. However, antibiotics are not fully metabolized by animals, and they are evacuated to the environment with excreta. Animal manure is used as fertilizer to reduce the volume of waste generated in the livestock sector. However, manure often contains microorganisms harboring antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Then, the microbiome

Bezlotoxumab prevents extraintestinal organ damage induced by Clostridioides difficile infection.

Clostridioides difficile is the most common cause of infectious antibiotic-associated diarrhea, with disease mediated by two major toxins TcdA and TcdB. In severe cases, systemic disease complications may arise, resulting in fatal disease. Systemic disease in animal models has been described, with thymic damage an observable consequence of severe disease in mice. Using a mouse model of C. difficile infection, we examined this disease phenotype, focussing on the thymus and serum markers of systemic disease. The efficacy of bezlotoxumab, a monoclonal TcdB therapeutic, to prevent toxin mediated s

Superior Haplotypes for Early Root Vigor Traits in Rice Under Dry Direct Seeded Low Nitrogen Condition Through Genome Wide Association Mapping.

Water and land resources have been aggressively exploited in the recent decades to meet the growing demands for food. The changing climate has prompted rice scientists and farmers of the tropics and subtropics to adopt the direct seeded rice (DSR) system. DSR system of rice cultivation significantly reduces freshwater consumption and labor requirements, while increasing system productivity, resource use efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Early root vigor is an essential trait required in an ideal DSR system of rice cultivation to ensure a good crop stand, adequate uptake of wat

Zinc oxide nanoparticles mediated substantial physiological and molecular changes in tomato.

There has long been debate about how nanoproducts meet agricultural requirements. This study aimed to investigate tomato responses to the long-time foliar application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP; 0 and 3 mgl-1) or bulk type (BZnO). Both ZnO-NP and BZnO treatments, especially the nanoform, were significantly capable of improving growth, biomass, and yield. The ZnO-NP treatment upregulated the expression of the R2R3MYB transcription factor by 2.6 folds. The BZnO and ZnO-NP treatments transcriptionally up-regulated WRKY1 gene by 2.5 and 6.4 folds, respectively. The bHLH gene was also upre

Transcriptional response of blood leukocytes from turkeys challenged with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium UK1.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella is one of the most common causes of bacterial foodborne disease and consumption of contaminated poultry products, including turkey, is one source of exposure. Minimizing Salmonella colonization of commercial turkeys could decrease the incidence of Salmonella-associated human foodborne illness. Understanding host responses to these bacteria is critical in developing strategies to minimize colonization and reduce food safety risk. In this study, we evaluated bacterial load and blood leukocyte transcriptomic responses of 3-week-old turkeys challenged with the Salmonella e

iTRAQ-based proteomic analyses of the plant-pathogenic bacterium Acidovorax citrulli during entrance into and resuscitation from the viable but nonculturable state.

Acidovorax citrulli, the causal agent of bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) disease, infects cucurbit crops including watermelon and melon. This bacterium can enter the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state following exposure to copper sulfate. Moreover, copper-induced VBNC A. citrulli cells can be resuscitated by EDTA. In this study, isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) was used to compare protein profiles of VBNC cells, resuscitated cells at different stages and log-phase cells of the A. citrulli model strain AAC00-1. A total of 2672 proteins were identified, with 60 being

Identification and characterization of the GmRD26 soybean promoter in response to abiotic stresses: potential tool for biotechnological application.

BACKGROUND: Drought is one of the most harmful abiotic stresses for plants, leading to reduced productivity of several economically important crops and, consequently, considerable losses in the agricultural sector. When plants are exposed to stressful conditions, such as drought and high salinity, they modulate the expression of genes that lead to developmental, biochemical, and physiological changes, which help to overcome the deleterious effects of adverse circumstances. Thus, the search for new specific gene promoter sequences has proved to be a powerful biotechnological strategy to control

Discovery of anthelmintic drug targets and drugs using chokepoints in nematode metabolic pathways.

Parasitic roundworm infections plague more than 2 billion people (1/3 of humanity) and cause drastic losses in crops and livestock. New anthelmintic drugs are urgently needed as new drug resistance and environmental concerns arise. A "chokepoint reaction" is defined as a reaction that either consumes a unique substrate or produces a unique product. A chokepoint analysis provides a systematic method of identifying novel potential drug targets. Chokepoint enzymes were identified in the genomes of 10 nematode species, and the intersection and union of all chokepoint enzymes were found. By studyin

First Report of Freesia sneak virus Associated with Foliar Necrosis of Freesia refracta in Bulgaria.

In the early spring of 2011 and 2012, severe necrotic leaf symptoms were observed on freesia (Freesia refracta, family Iridaceae) in several greenhouses around Plovdiv (south central Bulgaria). The disease spread and symptom severity in several cultivars (Medeo, Calvados, and Pink Fountain) led to nearly complete production failure for some growers. Initial symptoms consisted of scattered pale, chlorotic, interveinal lesions that coalesced. Later, irregular brown to black necrotic blotches partially covered the leaves. Flower break was also observed. Diseased plants were collected in late Apri

Dissecting the genetics of forage quality traits in soft red winter wheat in the U.S. southeast region.

Winter wheat plays a viable role in agriculture, not only as a primary grain crop but also as a valuable forage source that bridges fall-spring forage gaps in many regions, including the southeastern (SE) U.S. Despite its nutritive potential, genetic basis of forage-quality traits remains insufficiently understood, limiting breeding efforts for dual-purpose cultivars. This study aimed to dissect the genetic architecture of forage quality in 182 soft red winter wheat (SRWW) genotypes adapted to the SE U.S. using genome-wide association study (GWAS). Field experiments were carried out in randomi

Integrating hyperspectral features and physiological parameters for quantitative estimation of fig rust severity.

INTRODUCTION: Fig rust caused by Phakopsora nishidana is a destructive foliar disease that impairs leaf photosynthetic capacity and seriously endangers fig yield and production stability. Traditional visual diagnosis of fig rust severity relies on manual observation, which is labor-intensive, highly subjective, and incapable of large-scale, quantitative disease evaluation. Although hyperspectral remote sensing has been widely adopted for plant disease monitoring, few studies have integrated hyperspectral reflectance features and leaf physiological parameters for quantitative estimation of fig

Effects of variable nitrogen fertilization rates and dried distillers grains plus solubles supplementation on forage use, animal performance, and economic outcomes of steer calves grazing winter wheat pastures.

With the continued increase of fertilizer prices, stocker cattle producers may utilize alternative management strategies to mitigate costs and extend the grazing season to achieve better utilization of a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop. One potential strategy is to reduce pasture nitrogen (N) fertilization rates combined with animal dietary supplementation. In this 3-year (yr) study, wheat pastures (1.62-hectare (ha)) were stocked at fixed rates of 2.47 and 4.94 steer/ha in the fall and spring respectively. Nitrogen was applied as urea to experimental pastures at three different rates: 1) 10
