A study of neurologic symptoms on exposure to organophosphate pesticides in the children of agricultural workers.

Pesticides are used extensively throughout the world in agriculture and in pest control as well as for community health purposes. Organophosphate (OP) pesticide self-poisoning is an important clinical problem in rural regions of the developing world that kills an estimated 200,000 people every year. Unintentional poisoning kills far fewer people but is an apparent problem in places where highly toxic OP pesticides are available. Neurologic dysfunction is the best documented health effect of pesticide exposure. High-level exposure has both acute and long-term neurologic signs and symptoms, and

Vaccination trends and operational challenges in Peste des Petits Ruminants eradication in Ethiopia.

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a major transboundary disease in Ethiopia, where the national goal is eradication by 2027. However, evidence on vaccination performance and operational challenges remains limited. This study assessed vaccination trends over six years (September 2018–August 2024) and conducted surveys with animal health professionals (AHPs) (January–May 2024) to identify key enabling factors and constraints influencing eradication efforts in the North Shewa Zone. The findings revealed that a risk-based vaccination strategy (RBVS) has been implemented since 2018, focusing on h

Comparative proteomic responses of Paranosema locustae spores to desiccation and ultraviolet irradiation.

Environmental persistence is essential for the efficacy of the microsporidian parasite Paranosema locustae (P. locustae), yet the molecular mechanisms underlying its tolerance to desiccation and ultraviolet (UV) stress remain poorly understood. Here, we employed data-independent acquisition (DIA)-based quantitative proteomics to characterize the global proteomic responses of P. locustae spores subjected to desiccation and UV irradiation. Spores were exposed either to desiccation at 40°C and ≤30% relative humidity for 5 days or to UV irradiation (≥100 μW/cm²) for 24 h, followed by comparative p

Integrating Morphological, Molecular, and Climatic Evidence to Distinguish Two Cryptic Rice Leaf Folder Species and Assess Their Potential Distributions.

The larvae and damage symptoms of Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and Cnaphalocrocis patnalis exhibit a high degree of similarity, which often leads to confusion between the two species. This has posed challenges for research on their population dynamics and the development of effective control measures. To better understand their morphological and damage characteristics, population dynamics, species identification based on COI gene fragments, and potential future distribution, a searchlight trap monitoring program was conducted for C. medinalis and its closely related species C. patnalis across four

Development of a bacterial mixed culture preventing bacterial storage diseases of root vegetables.

The storage of root vegetables is a critical aspect of agricultural production, significantly impacting both the quality and quantity of produce available for consumption. This study aimed to develop a bacterial consortium capable of preventing storage bacterial diseases in root vegetables. A total of 225 bacterial strains were isolated from various ecological niches, including crops, peri-root soils, coastal dune soils, sewage sludge, and symbiotic bacteria of common insect pests. These strains were characterized for their ability to grow at storage temperatures (4 °C) and produce cellulase,

Chemical Modifications of an Insect Immune Resolvin, EpOME, to a Broad-Spectrum Lepidopteran-Specific Insecticide.

EpOMEs suppress excessive and unnecessary immune responses at late infection stage in insects. This immune resolvin activity of EpOMEs includes the cell lysis of hemocytes by causing apoptosis. This cytolytic toxicity of EpOMEs suggests a potential insecticidal activity of their stable analogs. In fact, a propoxy derivative of 12,13-EpOME called AS56 mimicked EpOME activity by suppressing immune responses and exhibited insecticidal activity against a lepidopteran insect, Spodoptera exigua. This study evaluated the potency of the EpOME analogs by modifying their functional groups. PD28 is a rac

Investigating Viral Causes of Abortions: A Comprehensive Molecular and Pathological Study on Small Ruminants in East Azerbaijan Province, Iran.

OBJECTIVE: Abortion emerges as a primary concern for small ruminant breeders, leading to substantial economic losses for livestock farmers. The most important factor contributing to abortion in sheep and goats is the presence of infectious agents. The bluetongue virus (BTV), border disease virus (BDV), peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), Akabane virus (AKAV) and pox virus are notable viruses responsible for inducing abortion in small ruminants globally. METHODS: This study focused on the prevalence of viral agents in aborted foetuses and adult sheep and goats with a recent abortion histo

Doublesex knockout via CRISPR/Cas9 disrupts fertility and sexual dimorphism of wings in the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis.

The doublesex (dsx) gene has a conserved role in sex determination in insects, controlling sexual development and mating behavior. Although dsx is known to participate in these critical functions, its role in insect sex determination remains not fully elucidated. Given the economic importance of the rice pest Chilo suppressalis, we employed this species as a model to investigate the function of its dsx homolog. We cloned and characterized the Csdsx gene, which is 1123 bp in length and encodes four sex-specific proteins: three female-specific isoforms of 252, 258, and 254 amino acids, respectiv

Probing the potential mechanism of permethrin exposure on Alzheimer's disease through enantiomer-specific network toxicology, multi-spectroscopic, and docking approaches.

Latest observations indicated that exposure of organic environmental neurotoxins may increase the potential risk of Alzheimer's diseases (AD). As a suspected food-derived risk factor, permethrin, composed of cis-isomer and trans-isomer, is widely used as a broad-spectrum pyrethroid insecticide in agricultural crops for the arthropod pests controlling. Thus, evaluating the impact of permethrin exposure is of great importance to human health. In this study, we performed the toxicological network approach to decipher AD-related mechanisms of cis-permethrin and trans-permethrin. Based on the toxic

Weasel exposure to the anticoagulant rodenticide bromadiolone in agrarian landscapes of southwestern Europe.

Bromadiolone is an anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) commonly used as a plant protection product (PPP) against rodent pests in agricultural lands. ARs can be transferred trophically to predators/scavengers when they consume intoxicated live or dead rodents. ARs exposure in weasels Mustela nivalis, small mustelids specialized on rodent predation, is poorly known in southern Europe. Moreover, in this species there is no information on bioaccumulation of AR diastereomers e.g., cis- and trans-bromadiolone. Trans-bromadiolone is more persistent in the rodent liver and thus, is expected to have a great

An Integrative Toxicological Assessment of the Herbicide Tebuthiuron: Elucidating Biochemical and Behavioral Responses in Developing Zebrafish.

Pesticides represent a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems due to their persistence and widespread use in agricultural areas, altering environments and exerting adverse effects on non-target organisms. Tebuthiuron is a phenylurea herbicide extensively used as an agrochemical to control pests and weeds in various crops, which often leads to contamination of aquatic environments. Despite its high water solubility and relatively long half-life in soil, studies on Tebuthiuron toxicity in fishes at environmental concentrations are limited. This study aimed to unravel the toxicity mechanisms of

Pheno- and genotyping in vitro dauer juvenile recovery in the nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora.

The entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is an effective biological-control agent of insect pests. The dauer juveniles (DJs) seek for, infect insects, and release cells of the carried symbiotic bacterium of the genus Photorhabdus. Inside the host, the DJs perceive signals from the insect's haemolymph that trigger the exit from the arrested stage and the further development to mature adults. This developmental step is called DJ recovery. In commercial production, a high and synchronous DJ recovery determines the success of liquid-culture mass production. To enhance the

Molecular detection of novel Anaplasma sp . and zoonotic hemopathogens in livestock and their hematophagous biting keds (genus Hippobosca) from Laisamis, northern Kenya.

Background: Livestock are key sources of livelihood among pastoral communities. Livestock productivity is chiefly constrained by pests and diseases. Due to inadequate disease surveillance in northern Kenya, little is known about pathogens circulating within livestock and the role of livestock-associated biting keds (genus Hippobosca) in disease transmission. We aimed to identify the prevalence of selected hemopathogens in livestock and their associated blood-feeding keds. Methods: We randomly collected 389 blood samples from goats (245), sheep (108), and donkeys (36), as well as 235 keds from

Oral toxicity of various Stemona collinsiae crude extracts against nymph and adult stages of American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (Dictyoptera: Blattodea).

Stemona collinsiae exhibits insecticidal resistance against various pests and insect vectors. However, insecticidal activity of S. collinsiae roots has not been tested for some insect vectors, including the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana. The synanthropic insect P. americana is a reservoir of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms and a cause of infectious diseases and cockroach allergy. This important vector transmits microorganisms to animals and humans to cause vector-borne diseases. This research involved detection of the nymphicidal and adulticidal activities of S. collin

The application of naked DNA plasmid (DrZP3) and recombinant adenovirus (Ad-rZP3) in rat animal model to determine comparative efficacy of ZP3-Immunocontraceptive vaccines.

The common physical and chemical methods for controlling rat pest are less than satisfactory and inhumane. Immunocontraception approach has been considered more humane and it can be accomplished by inducing the relevant host immune response that block further development of reproductive gametes. ZP3 proteins are known to play very important role during sperm-ovum fertilization. It is a self-antigen and only localized in female ovaries. Therefore, an immunization with ZP3 protein elsewhere will induce a generalize host immune response against ZP3 protein. This study employed rat ZP3 (rZP3) gene

Comparison of the Immunogenicities and Cross-Lineage Efficacies of Live Attenuated Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus Vaccines PPRV/Nigeria/75/1 and PPRV/Sungri/96.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe disease of goats and sheep that is widespread in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Several effective vaccines exist for the disease, based on attenuated strains of the virus (PPRV) that causes PPR. While the efficacy of these vaccines has been established by use in the field, the nature of the protective immune response has not been determined. In addition, while the vaccine derived from PPRV/Nigeria/75/1 (N75) is used in many countries, those developed in India have never been tested for their efficacy outside that country. We have studied the imm

Cytotoxicity and transcriptional activation of stress genes in human liver carcinoma (HepG2) cells exposed to iprodione.

Iprodione (C13H13Cl2N3O3) is a broad spectrum dicarboximide fungicide used on a wide variety of crop diseases. It is used on vegetables, ornamentals, pome and stone fruit, root crops, cotton and sunflowers, to control a variety of fungal pests. Iprodione inhibits the germination of spores and the growth of the fungal mycelium. Experimental studies with mice have indicated that exposure to iprodione at dose levels 5 to 15 folds greater than the LOAEL for liver injury, induces microsomal enzyme activities, hepatocyte proliferation, hepatomegaly, centrilobular hypertrophy, diffuse hypertrophy, an

Rickettsial and other tick-borne infections.

Tick bites are best prevented by people avoiding tick-infested areas. When this is not possible, tick bites may be prevented by the wearing of long trousers that are tucked into boots. The best method to avoid tick bites is twofold: application of a topical deet (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) repellent to exposed skin, and treatment of clothing with permethrin. This system is currently used by the US Army to protect soldiers. Ticks can crawl underneath clothing and bite untreated portions of the body; therefore, treating clothing is imperative. Permethrin is nontoxic to humans, and can be used in a
