Argumentation with restricted linguistic ability: performing a role play with aphasia or in a second language.

The main objective of this study is to illustrate how adaptation to linguistic limitations takes place in a specific activity and is affected by factors pertaining to the social activity or the individuals. A man with aphasia is compared to an adult immigrant L2 learner. An argumentative role play was video-recorded, transcribed and analysed. Both subjects have a very limited vocabulary and produce short utterances. The L2 learner often uses words that are semantically related to the target word, while the subject with aphasia uses more general and vague words, like pronouns, in combination wi

Measuring articulatory error consistency in children with developmental apraxia of speech.

Error inconsistency is often cited as a characteristic of children with speech disorders, particularly developmental apraxia of speech (DAS); however, few researchers operationally define error inconsistency and the definitions that do exist are not standardized across studies. This study proposes three formulas for measuring various aspects of articulatory error consistency: proportion of errors, consistency of error types, and consistency of the most frequently used error type. Each formula is explained using examples of productions from children with DAS and phonological delay. Clinical imp

Timing errors in two children with suspected childhood apraxia of speech (sCAS) during speech and music-related tasks.

Impaired speech prosody has been identified as a critical feature of suspected childhood apraxia of speech (sCAS). Lexical stress productions of children with sCAS have been characterized as 'excessive/equal/misplaced'. This investigation examines two potential explanations of this particular deficit, articulatory difficulty and impaired intrinsic timing. Two children with a diagnosis of sCAS (ages 4 years, 3 months and 9 years, 5 months) and two age-matched controls were observed during three speech and three music tasks. Acoustic analysis revealed that in all tasks, the performance of the co

Phonological and language disorders in children who stutter: impact on treatment recommendations.

In the profession of speech-language pathology, it is commonly reported that children who stutter, as a group, are more likely to have phonological and language disorders than their non-stuttering peers. Some support for this belief comes from survey studies that have questioned speech-language pathologists about the children on their caseloads who stutter. Recently, one such study reported that 44% of children who stuttered had at least one additional communication disorder (Arndt & Healey, 2001). In the present investigation, speech-language pathologists (n = 127) who were treating children

EPG therapy for children with long-standing speech disorders: predictions and outcomes.

This paper reports on a project using a series of single subjects to investigate the effectiveness of using electropalatography (EPG) in treating ten children with persisting speech difficulties of no known organic aetiology. The aims of the project were two-fold, firstly to assess whether the subjects selected benefited from this treatment, and secondly to investigate whether it was possible to predict which children would make maximum improvement. A number of factors were identified as possible predictors for successful EPG therapy and subjects were then ranked according to these predictions

Token-to-token variability in developmental apraxia of speech: three longitudinal case studies.

Variability in the speech production patterns of children with developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) was investigated in a three-year longitudinal study of three children with DAS. A metric was developed to measure token-to-token variability in repeated word productions from connected speech samples. Results suggest that high levels of total token and error token variability and low levels of word target stability and token accuracy characterize the disorder. Overall levels of variability and patterns of change over time differed between participants. Longitudinal patterns were indicative of d

Perceptual evaluation of motor speech following treatment for childhood cerebellar tumour.

The speech characteristics, oromotor function and speech intelligibility of a group of children treated for cerebellar tumour (CT) was investigated perceptually. Assessment of these areas was performed on 11 children treated for CT with dysarthric speech as well as 21 non-neurologically impaired controls matched for age and sex to obtain a comprehensive perceptual profile of their speech and oromotor mechanism. Contributing to the perception of dysarthria were a number of deviant speech dimensions including imprecision of consonants, hoarseness and decreased pitch variation, as well as a reduc

Toward an acoustic typology of motor speech disorders.

Acoustic methods have progressed to the point that an acoustic typology of the motor speech disorders can be constructed from a parameteric assessment of the speech subsystems (e.g., phonation, nasal resonance, vowel articulation, consonant articulation, intonation, and rhythm). The results of this analysis can be interpreted in respect to global functions in speech (e.g., voice quality, intelligibility, and prosody). This paper reviews studies showing that specific acoustic analyses have demonstrated or potential value toward the overall goal of constructing acoustic profiles of dysarthria an

Speech timing in children after the Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention.

It is known that operant treatments can control stuttering in children. However, at present it is unknown why such treatments are effective. Changes in the usual way of speaking are frequently observed after behavioural treatments for adults who stutter, and it is possible that operant treatments for children also invoke such changes. To explore this idea, selected acoustic measures of speech timing were made in eight preschool children before and after receiving the Lidcombe Program, which is an operant treatment for stuttering. No systematic changes were detected after treatment. Considering

The clinical analysis layer of transcription.

The clinical analysis layer of transcription is part of a 'toolkit' approach for detailed analysis of communication samples. This article provides a rationale for using the clinical analysis strategy and is supported by several examples of how a clinical analysis layer can add to the understanding of communication errors or other clinical areas of interest. The examples used in this paper are drawn from the areas of stuttering and aural rehabilitation and demonstrate the utility of this clinical analysis layer of transcription.

Neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings of developmental dysphasia: A longitudinal case study.

This article presents an unusual and interesting neuropsychological and neuroimaging longitudinal study of a child who showed a relatively specific developmental language disorder in the absence of any other significant cognitive, emotional or neurological disturbance. The neuropsychological assessment included tests of intelligence, memory, language and frontal lobe functions. Our patient had a marked developmental language disorder characterized by severe impairment of oral and written language and a restricted vocabulary, even though the comprehension of both spoken and written language was

Developmental implications of nonlinear phonological theory.

For the past 20 years the field of linguistics has provided a basis for assessment and treatment methods for speech and language disorders. Since Goldsmiths (1976) dissertation showing tone as an independently functioning autosegment, new and robust phonological frameworks have become available, i.e. nonlinear phonological frameworks. This paper outlines major aspects of nonlinear phonology and its developmental implications. Based in generative phonology, nonlinear frameworks adhere to many of the tenets of the generative grammar tradition, such as markedness and autonomy of linguistic compon

Variability in speech dyspraxia.

In a volume dedicated to Professor Crystal, this study takes up some remarks of his (1982) regarding definitions of disorders and use of day-to-day clinical data. The topic chosen relates to the notion of variability in speech dyspraxia. Several different uses of the term are noted, but the one used in this paper focuses on variability of errors in a given word on a repeated-trials task. This task was employed to investigate whether, as previously claimed, speech dyspraxics differ from other pronunciation-disordered groups in terms of error variability. Results indicate that as a group they di

Three speech sounds, one motor action: evidence for speech-motor disparity from English flap production.

The assumption that units of speech production bear a one-to-one relationship to speech motor actions pervades otherwise widely varying theories of speech motor behavior. This speech production and simulation study demonstrates that commonly occurring flap sequences may violate this assumption. In the word "Saturday," a sequence of three sounds may be produced using a single, cyclic motor action. Under this view, the initial upward tongue tip motion, starting with the first vowel and moving to contact the hard palate on the way to a retroflex position, is under active muscular control, while t

The dorsal stream contribution to phonological retrieval in object naming.

Meaningful speech, as exemplified in object naming, calls on knowledge of the mappings between word meanings and phonological forms. Phonological errors in naming (e.g. GHOST named as 'goath') are commonly seen in persisting post-stroke aphasia and are thought to signal impairment in retrieval of phonological form information. We performed a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping analysis of 1718 phonological naming errors collected from 106 individuals with diverse profiles of aphasia. Voxels in which lesion status correlated with phonological error rates localized to dorsal stream areas, in keep

Modelling relations between sensory processing, speech perception, orthographic and phonological ability, and literacy achievement.

The general magnocellular theory postulates that dyslexia is the consequence of a multimodal deficit in the processing of transient and dynamic stimuli. In the auditory modality, this deficit has been hypothesized to interfere with accurate speech perception, and subsequently disrupt the development of phonological and later reading and spelling skills. In the visual modality, an analogous problem might interfere with literacy development by affecting orthographic skills. In this prospective longitudinal study, we tested dynamic auditory and visual processing, speech-in-noise perception, phono

Relationship between cortical thickness and fluency in the memory disorders clinic population.

As brain networks break down in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, language and executive function frequently decline. We aimed to quantify the relationship between fluency (both categorical and phonemic) and cortical thickness using data from a large cohort of patients who were undergoing assessment at a memory disorders clinic. In addition, we defined the pattern of these relationships across the four major lobes of the brain. A total of 590 patients underwent extensive psychometric testing, including categorical (animal-naming) and phonemic (FAS) tests of fluency. All

Formant frequency estimation of high-pitched vowels using weighted linear prediction.

All-pole modeling is a widely used formant estimation method, but its performance is known to deteriorate for high-pitched voices. In order to address this problem, several all-pole modeling methods robust to fundamental frequency have been proposed. This study compares five such previously known methods and introduces a technique, Weighted Linear Prediction with Attenuated Main Excitation (WLP-AME). WLP-AME utilizes temporally weighted linear prediction (LP) in which the square of the prediction error is multiplied by a given parametric weighting function. The weighting downgrades the contrib
