Hydrogels-Assisted Cell Engraftment for Repairing the Stroke-Damaged Brain: Chimera or Reality.

The use of advanced biomaterials as a structural and functional support for stem cells-based therapeutic implants has boosted the development of tissue engineering applications in multiple clinical fields. In relation to neurological disorders, we are still far from the clinical reality of restoring normal brain function in neurodegenerative diseases and cerebrovascular disorders. Hydrogel polymers show unique mechanical stiffness properties in the range of living soft tissues such as nervous tissue. Furthermore, the use of these polymers drastically enhances the engraftment of stem cells as w

Histologic and biomechanical comparison of fascia lata autograft, acellular dermal xenograft, and synthetic patch for bridging massive rotator cuff tear in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Bridging repair has emerged as a promising and reliable treatment strategy for the massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs). However, there remains a lack of evidence on which bridging graft provides the better repair results, and a dearth of animal studies comparing bridging repairs with different grafts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histological and biomechanical outcomes of commonly used grafts (autologous fascia lata (FL), acellular dermal matrix graft (ADM), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) patch). METHODS: A total of 66 male New Zealand White Rabbits were used

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Is Associated With Arterial Distensibility and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness: (from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis).

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered a potential independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis cohort enrolled 6,814 adults without previous CVD. We excluded 2,692 participants who had missing variables, were heavy drinkers, or history of steroid use and/or chronic liver disease. NAFLD was defined using noncontrast cardiac CT and a liver/spleen Hounsfield Unit attenuation ratio <1. Ultrasound-measured carotid arterial compliance and stiffness, was expressed as distensibility coefficient and Young's modulus. Common and inte

Biomechanical analysis comparing natural and alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement using a finite element model.

PURPOSE: Prosthetic materials and bone present quite different mechanical properties. Consequently, mandible reconstruction with metallic materials (or a mandible condyle implant) modifies the physiologic behavior of the mandible (stress, strain patterns, and condyle displacements). The changing of bone strain distribution results in an adaptation of the temporomandibular joint, including articular contacts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a validated finite element model, the natural mandible strains and condyle displacements were evaluated. Modifications of strains and displacements were then

Clinical outcome and quantitative evaluation of periprosthetic bone-remodeling of an uncemented femoral component with taper design. A prospective study.

The rationale of uncemented taper stems is based on fixation in the proximal portion of the femoral diaphysis, a self-locking principle, and a low modulus of elasticity. The aim of this study was to evaluate a collarless femoral component designed to be a three-dimensional taper for press-fit insertion with regard to clinical outcome, efficacy of fixation, incidence of osteolysis, and periprosthetic bone-remodeling. The first 48 consecutive patients (50 hips) with osteoarthritis who had had primary total hip arthroplasty using the Cerafit Multicone stem and the Cerafit Triradius-M press-fit cu

Differential diagnosis of B-mode ultrasound Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System category 3-4a lesions in conjunction with shear-wave elastography using conservative and aggressive approaches.

BACKGROUND: The high false-positive rates of US Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 3-4a breast lesions leads to excessive biopsies of many benign lesions, and our aim was to investigate the diagnostic performance achieved by adding a maximum elasticity (Emax) of shear-wave elastography (SWE) to ultrasound (US) to evaluate US BI-RADS category 3-4a breast lesions using conservative and aggressive approaches. We explored the capacity of using this method to avoid unnecessary biopsies without increasing the probability of missing breast cancers. METHODS: A total of 123 br

Finite element analysis of the human mandible to assess the effect of removing an impacted third molar.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to generate 3-dimensional models of a human mandible with impacted third molars. The aim was to analyze the effects of removing various amounts of bone around an impacted mandibular third molar and to predict the possibility of iatrogenic fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were acquired from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of a patient using numerically calculated mechanical parameters. Virtual surgery was then performed on the mandibular models, and standardized chewing forces were applied to the resulting simulations.

FEM analysis of the mandibular first premolar with different post diameters.

Several reports have pointed out that endodontically treated teeth can lack strength, and that the teeth can be reinforced using posts. However, it has not been clear how to select posts that meet the needs of most clinical situations, particularly in terms of the post diameter, which has a major influence on the occurrence of root fracture. The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distributions of posts of various diameters during masticatory loads using a finite element method. A 3-dimensional (3D) finite element model of a lower first premolar was developed. We used the image sof

Electroless Nickel Plating of Material Surfaces for Ultracold Neutron Storage Traps.

Electroless nickel plating of various alloys is one of the most technologically mature methods for producing functional coatings with high corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and stable service performance. In the field of ultracold neutron (UCN) physics, nickel-phosphorus coatings based on the 58Ni isotope are of particular interest. Its exceptionally high neutron optical potential, approximately 342 neV, is substantially higher than that of natural nickel, which is approximately 245.5 neV. At the same time, 58Ni and natural nickel have essentially identical chemical properties and differ

The effects on type 2 diabetes mellitus mouse femoral bone achieved by anti-osteoporosis exercise interventions.

PURPOSE: Exercise therapy and key regulators of bone quality exert anti-hyperglycemic effects on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mice. A number of programs have been reported to have an effect on bone disease in T2DM. Major unanswered questions concern the potential correlation of exercise with the improvement of bone quality in T2DM mice and how the nonlinear optical properties of bone are correlated with changes to its crystal structure. METHODS: Subjects were randomly divided into six groups: 1) control (C) group, which was fed a normal diet (n = 8); 2) T2DM quiet group, which was given a

Nonaqueous Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Double Emulsions as a Novel Platform for Synthesizing Macroporous Beads with Tailored Morphologies.

Nonaqueous deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based high internal phase double emulsions (double-HIPEs) were employed as a novel platform for synthesizing polyHIPE beads with a well-defined spherical shape and a 3D-interconnected macroporous structure. A primary DES1/O HIPE was prepared using the monomer styrene and the cross-linker divinylbenzene (10:1 molar ratio) as the oil (continuous) phase (20 vol %) and stabilized with the nonionic Span 60 surfactant (10, 20, or 30 wt %). It was then dispersed at a controlled addition rate (0.9 or 1.8 mL/min) into DES2, a surfactant and water-free suspension m

Elastoplasty as a promising novel technique: Vertebral augmentation with an elastic silicone-based polymer.

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous vertebroplasty with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) restores the stiffness and the strength of fractured vertebral bodies, but changes the pattern of the stress transfer. This effect may cause a secondary fracture of the adjacent vertebrae. Elastoplasty has emerged as a new technique to overcome this complication. The aim of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the clinical results of the elastoplasty procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirthy nine patients (9 males, 30 females, 87 spinal levels) were clinically evaluated pre and postoperatively in terms of pain reli

Mandibular anterior intrusion using miniscrews for skeletal anchorage: A 3-dimensional finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Deepbites can be corrected by intrusion of mandibular anterior teeth. Direct anchorage with miniscrews simplifies complex tooth movements; however, few studies have reported their use for mandibular anterior intrusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by means of the finite element method, initial tooth displacement and periodontal stress distribution using various mandibular anterior intrusion mechanics. Miniscrews were used as skeletal anchorage devices. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans were used for 3-dimensional reconstruction of the mandible and the ma
