Mandibular anterior intrusion using miniscrews for skeletal anchorage: A 3-dimensional finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Deepbites can be corrected by intrusion of mandibular anterior teeth. Direct anchorage with miniscrews simplifies complex tooth movements; however, few studies have reported their use for mandibular anterior intrusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by means of the finite element method, initial tooth displacement and periodontal stress distribution using various mandibular anterior intrusion mechanics. Miniscrews were used as skeletal anchorage devices. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans were used for 3-dimensional reconstruction of the mandible and the ma

Effect of crown to implant ratio and implant dimensions on periimplant stress of splinted implant-supported crowns: a finite element analysis.

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of different crown-implant (C/I) ratios and implant dimensions on periimplant stress in the partially edentulous posterior mandible by 3-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two implants were placed in the second premolar and first molar regions of the mandibular model. The implants were then splinted with a 2-unit fixed bridge. The influence of 3 parameters (C/I ratio, implant length, and implant diameter) on periimplant bone stress was then analyzed by using FEA. RESULTS: C/I ratios showed a direct relationship with periimplant

Three-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis in treatment planning for orthodontic tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential of 3-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis as clinical tools in treatment planning for orthodontic tooth movement. High stresses in bone and miniscrew implants under load can cause fractures and trauma for orthodontic patients, and treatments are typically planned by using clinical experience or simple 2-dimensional radiographs. METHODS: Anatomically accurate 3-dimensional models reconstructed from cone-beam computed tomography scans were used to simulate the retraction of a single-rooted mandibular canine w

The mechanical microenvironment regulates ovarian cancer cell morphology, migration, and spheroid disaggregation.

There is growing appreciation of the importance of the mechanical properties of the tumor microenvironment on disease progression. However, the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness and cellular mechanotransduction in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of substrate rigidity on various aspects of SKOV3 human EOC cell morphology and migration. Young's modulus values of normal mouse peritoneum, a principal target tissue for EOC metastasis, were determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and hydrogels were fabricated to mimic these values.

Computer-aided design of the human aortic root.

The development of computer-based 3D models of the aortic root is one of the most important problems in constructing the prostheses for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. In the current study, we analyzed data from 117 patients with and without aortic valve disease and computed tomography data from 20 patients without aortic valvular diseases in order to estimate the average values of the diameter of the aortic annulus and other aortic root parameters. Based on these data, we developed a 3D model of human aortic root with unique geometry. Furthermore, in this study we show that by applyi

Reversibly Cross-Linked Polymers: A New Method for High-Performance and Sustainable Polymer Materials.

ConspectusConventional polymeric materials have profoundly shaped modern society by enabling the large-scale production of lightweight and mechanically robust products. However, their massive consumption and rapid proliferation have led to extensive environmental pollution and severe resource depletion. These escalating concerns underscore the urgent need for sustainable alternatives that exhibit inherent healing, reprocessing, and closed-loop recycling capabilities. Although noncovalent interactions and dynamic covalent bonds endow polymer materials with reversibility that is essential for su

Extracellular Matrix Stiffness as a Key Molecular Event in Early Osteoarthritis: Crosstalk Between the RhoA/ROCK and ERK1/2 Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) involves progressive cartilage degradation, and the extracellular matrix (ECM) regulates chondrocyte behavior. In OA, ECM stiffening, driven by age-related matrix changes and mechanical joint injuries, contributes to cartilage damage. Although RhoA/ROCK and ERK1/2 signaling participate in cartilage remodeling, how these pathways interact across ECM stiffness conditions remains unclear. PURPOSE: To clarify how ECM stiffness modulates chondrocyte catabolic/anabolic activity and cartilage degeneration by investigating crosstalk between the RhoA/ROCK and ERK1/2 pat

The inferomedial femoral neck is compromised by age but not disease: Fracture toughness and the multifactorial mechanisms comprising reference point microindentation.

The influence of ageing on the fracture mechanics of cortical bone tissue is well documented, though little is known about if and how related material properties are further affected in two of the most prominent musculoskeletal diseases, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis (OA). The femoral neck, in close proximity to the most pertinent osteoporotic fracture site and near the hip joint affected by osteoarthritis, is a site of particular interest for investigation. We have recently shown that Reference Point micro-Indentation (RPI) detects differences between cortical bone from the femoral neck of
