Rare causes of acute abdomen and review of literature: Primary/secondary omental torsion, isolated segmental omental necrosis, and epiploic appendagitis.

BACKGROUND: Primary/secondary omental torsion (POT/SOT), isolated segmental omental necrosis (ISON), and primary epiploic appendagitis (PEA) are rare causes of acute abdominal pain that often lead to misdiagnosis. Although the differential diagnosis may vary according to the localization and severity of the pain, and associated symptoms such as nausea-vomiting and fever, depending on the disease and site of involvement, the character of the pain is generally similar and in a continuous form. Depending on pain localization, it can mimic different clinical pictures such as acute appendicitis, ac

What is the best method of rectovaginal fistula repair? A 25-year single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment of rectovaginal fistula (RVF) remains challenging and there is a lack of data to demonstrate the best, single procedure. The aim of this study was to assess the results of different surgical operations for rectovaginal fistula. METHODS: Patients with RVF who underwent surgical repair between 1992 and 2017 at a single, tertiary care center were included. Twenty different procedures were performed including: primary closure, closure with sphincter repair, flap repairs, plug/fibrin/mesh repair, examination under anesthesia (EUA) ± seton placement, abdominal res

Evaluation of Bladder Dysfunction Outcomes Among Standardized Bladder Shapes in Children With Spina Bifida.

OBJECTIVES: To (1) propose standardized terminology for bladder shapes on fluoroscopic images in a pediatric spina bifida population and (2) determine if bladder shape is associated with filling pressures and other measures of bladder dysfunction. We hypothesized that oblong, trabeculated, and "Christmas tree" bladders would have higher filling pressures and worse bladder function (higher filling pressures; higher presence of vesicoureteral reflux, leakage, detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergia, and hydronephrosis) than smooth and round-shaped bladders. METHODS: We conducted a cross-section

Atypical abdominal pain: uncovering malignant peritoneal mesothelioma in suspected Crohn's disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive cancer from the serosal membranes of the abdominal cavity. In the United States, MPM accounts for about 10-15% of all mesothelioma cases, and translates into approximately 600 new cases diagnosed annually. It is typically diagnosed in Caucasian individuals, and while asbestos exposure is a well-established risk factor for pleural mesothelioma, its association with peritoneal mesothelioma remains less clear. Clinical symptoms of MPM, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and weight loss, overlap with other gastrointestinal

Symptomatic Meckel's Diverticulum in Pediatric Patients-Case Reports and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Introduction: Our aim was to highlight the characteristics of pediatric Meckel's diverticulum with a special focus on its complications. Methods: We report a group of seven patients with Meckel's diverticulum and its resection from the Department of Pediatric Surgery between 2012 and 2017. We reviewed all patient records, clinical presentation, and intraoperative findings. The diagnosis was confirmed by surgery and pathology. For a systematic literature review, we used PubMed, Medline and Google Scholar search engines to locate articles containing terms such as Meckel's diverticulum, children,

Malakoplakia of the colon following renal transplantation in a 73 year old woman: report of a case presenting as intestinal perforation.

BACKGROUND: Malakoplakia is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by tissue infiltrates of large granular macrophages containing distinctive intracytoplasmic inclusions termed Michaelis-Gutmann (MG) bodies. The genitourinary system is the most commonly involved site, followed by the gastrointestinal tract. Malakoplakia may occur as a complication of primary or secondary immunosuppression and, therefore, renal transplant recipients are at risk. The graft itself or extra-renal sites may be involved. Regarding the latter, six cases of colorectal malakoplakia have been reported following re

Single-port surgery (SPS) strategy for small bowel obstruction (SBO) caused by postoperative internal hernia: A series case report.

RATIONALE: Internal hernia due to postoperative adhesions sometimes causes small bowel obstruction (SBO) and requires emergency surgery. The difficulties in the management of SBO with internal hernia include accurate diagnosis and estimation of its ischemic degree and of the risk of SBO recurrences following the surgical procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is a noninvasive to reduce postoperative adhesions and therefore has been widely used recently. However, surgeons often tend to hesitate in applying laparoscopic surgery for SBO because of some situational disadvantages such as poor operating sp

Outcome of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease patients on peritoneal dialysis: a national retrospective study based on two French registries (the French Language Peritoneal Dialysis Registry and the French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network).

BACKGROUND: Pathological features of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) include enlarged kidney volume, higher frequency of digestive diverticulitis and abdominal wall hernias. Therefore, many nephrologists have concerns about the use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in ADPKD patients. We aimed to analyse survival and technique failure in ADPKD patients treated with PD. METHODS: We conducted two retrospective studies on patients starting dialysis between 2000 and 2010. We used two French registries: the French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network (REIN) and the French langu

Prevalence and characteristics of colonic polyps and adenomas in 2654 colonoscopies in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common malignancy in the Saudi population, with an increasing incidence over the past 20 years. We aim to determine the baseline polyp as well as adenoma prevalence in a large cohort of patients and to find the possible age in which, if deemed appropriate, a CRC screening program should be initiated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using an endoscopic reporting database of individuals seen at a major tertiary care university hospital (King Khalid University Hospital) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Metronidazole- and carbapenem-resistant bacteroides thetaiotaomicron isolated in Rochester, Minnesota, in 2014.

Emerging antimicrobial resistance in members of the Bacteroides fragilis group is a concern in clinical medicine. Although metronidazole and carbapenem resistance have been reported in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a member of the B. fragilis group, they have not, to the best of our knowledge, been reported together in the same B. thetaiotaomicron isolate. Herein, we report isolation of piperacillin-tazobactam-, metronidazole-, clindamycin-, ertapenem-, and meropenem-resistant B. thetaiotaomicron from a patient with postoperative intra-abdominal abscess and empyema. [Secure anastomoses of the large intestine (especially with transanal drainage].

The results of colonic resections were investigated in 356 patients in a retrospective analysis. Special attention was directed to the effectiveness of a transrectal tube, leading to decompression of the anastomosis for the first five days. Under elective conditions, the overall complication-rate was 12.7%. In emergency cases, these complications were 51.5% (one third of these cases had a decompression-tube). The clinical relevant leakage-rate under elective conditions ranged to 1.7%. Postoperative mortality related to surgical complications turned out to be 1.5% under elective conditions. The

Etiology and management outcomes of inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: Inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms (IMAAs) are extremely rare, and their natural history and treatment outcomes are poorly understood. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of consecutive patients with IMAAs treated at a multistate health system between November 2005 and August 2025. Demographics, etiology, imaging features, treatment, and outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 15 patients (11 male; mean age, 66 ± 15 years), and all these patients were diagnosed on computed tomography angiography. Presentation was with nonspecific abdominal pain in nine patients (88%

Pseudo-tumoral left-colonic tuberculosis causing acute large-bowel obstruction: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastrointestinal tuberculosis predominantly affects the ileocecal region, while isolated left colonic involvement remains rare. Its nonspecific clinical, radiological, and endoscopic features frequently mimic colorectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, making diagnosis challenging. Acute large bowel obstruction secondary to left colonic tuberculosis is uncommon and may necessitate emergency surgery before a definitive diagnosis is made. Histopathological examination remains essential for confirmation, and early recognition allows prompt anti-tuberculous treatm

Laparoscopic colon surgery: past, present and future.

Since its first described case in 1991, laparoscopic colon surgery has lagged behind minimally invasive surgical methods for solid intra-abdominal organs in terms of acceptability, dissemination, and ease of learning. In colon cancer, initial concerns over port site metastases and adequacy of oncologic resection have considerably dampened early enthusiasm for this procedure. Only recently, with the publication of several large, randomized controlled trials, has the incidence of port site metastases been shown to be equivalent to that of open resection. Laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer has

Feasibility of colectomy with mini-incision.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic resection has been advocated as a method of colectomy for various colon and rectal disease. One advantage claimed by laparoscopy is its smaller incision size. The aim of the present study is to evaluate whether mini-incision is feasible along with the advantage of adequate exploration of the peritoneal cavity. METHODS: From December 2000 to November 2003, 316 patients with various colorectal diseases receiving colectomies through a skin incision less than 7 cm were analyzed. All of the colectomies were performed by a single surgeon. Exploration of the entire peritonea
