Prevalence of rhesus D-negative blood type and the challenges of rhesus D immunoprophylaxis among obstetric population in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transplacental or fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) may occur during pregnancy or at delivery and lead to immunization to the D antigen if the mother is Rh-negative and the baby is Rh-positive. This can result in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) in subsequent D-positive pregnancies. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups among pregnant women in Ethiopia. METHOD: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, HINARI, AFRO Library Databases, and African Online Journal data

Factors associated with mortality among neonates admitted to Special Care Baby Unit: evidence from a matched case-control study in a rural general hospital in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the high burden, few studies have examined the risk factors linked to these deaths. This study aims to explore factors associated with neonatal mortality in a rural setting of a low-income country. METHOD: A case-control study matched in the ratio 0f 1:1 by age at admission was conducted at Anaka General Hospital Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Northern Uganda between June 1, 2020, and May 31, 2023. Cases were neonates who died during hospitalization and controls were those discharged alive

Fetal ultrasound parameters associated with N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels in umbilical cord blood: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Current Doppler and functional ultrasound parameters, such as the cardiovascular profile score, umbilical artery pulsatility index, and ductus venosus pulsatility index, are valuable for detecting advanced fetal cardiac decompensation; however, they have limited ability in identifying subtle hemodynamic changes. This critical gap in current fetal assessment highlights the need for reliable markers that can identify subtle cardiac stress before overt failure. In this study, we aimed to identify fetal ultrasound parameters associated with umbilical venous N-terminal pro-B-type natriu

The effect of fenugreek oral capsule on the sleep quality of primiparous women in the postpartum period: a triple‑blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In the first days after childbirth, women often sleep less and have poorer sleep because of physiological and psychological changes and their new responsibilities. Given the side effects of chemical medications, herbal remedies are increasingly considered. This study aimed to determine the effect of fenugreek oral capsules on the sleep quality of primiparous women during the postpartum period. METHODS: This two-group, triple-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2023 on 60 primiparous women attending health centers in Sabzevar. Eligible women took either a 700 mg fen

Timing of umbilical cord clamping and its predictors among neonates in Northeast Ethiopia: a multicenter prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Optimal umbilical cord clamping, defined as clamping between one and three minutes after birth, is recommended by the World Health Organization to improve infant health and nutritional outcomes through placental transfusion. Despite these recommendations, early cord clamping remains prevalent in many settings, depriving neonates of up to 30% greater blood volume and increasing the risk of iron deficiency anemia., Evidence on the time to cord clamping and its predictors is limited in Ethiopia. The study aim to assess the time to umbilical cord clamping and its predictors among neona

The role of the vaginal microbiome in pregnancy loss and preterm birth: a commentary.

BACKGROUND: Eubiosis or dysbiosis of the vaginal microbiome may influence the rate of pregnancy loss and preterm birth, the major cause of neonatal and perinatal mortality worldwide. METHODS: This was a comparison of two vaginal microbiome studies; one a cohort study and the other a multinational randomised controlled feasibility study. Both studies used cultivation-independent molecular microbiological techniques that together have implications on the risk of pregnancy loss and preterm birth in association with vaginal dysbiosis. RESULTS: The cohort study identified a risk-associated vagina

Bidirectional associations between maternal depressive symptomatology and parenting: moderating effects of breastfeeding and partner support.

Postpartum depression and parenting both play a role in shaping children's future behavior. However, there is limited understanding of the interaction and the evolving relationship between depressive symptoms and parenting practices. This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional associations between maternal depressive symptomatology and parenting (maternal self-efficacy, maternal warmth, and maternal hostile-reactive behaviors) in the postpartum period and to assess the moderating effect of breastfeeding and partner support on these associations. Latent growth curve and multigroup analyse

Six-month mental health outcomes among participants in a postpartum care in the NICU (PeliCaN) trial: secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Parents of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) face barriers to postpartum care and are at risk for adverse mental health outcomes. The Postpartum Care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PeliCaN) study evaluated a novel doula-coordinated, midwife-delivered care model for NICU parents. This secondary analysis compared mental health outcomes between participants randomized to the PeliCaN intervention versus usual postpartum care. METHODS: Postpartum parents of preterm infants < 34 weeks admitted to the NICU with an anticipated stay > 1 week were included.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation in pregnancy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are rare vascular anomalies often linked to hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). Pregnancy-related hemodynamic and hormonal changes may exacerbate PAVMs and lead to serious maternal and fetal complications. CASE: A 26-year-old multipara at 25 weeks’ gestation presented with fever, cough, progressive dyspnea and left chest pain. Imaging demonstrated bilateral PAVMs with a loculated left pleural effusion. She was managed conservatively (intercostal drainage, transfusion, thromboprophylaxis) and monitored closely. Embolization was

The critical gap in prevention: knowledge of periconception folic acid supplementation and its predictors among pregnant women in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Folic acid deficiency is the most common pregnancy-related micronutrient deficiency, leading to fetal neural tube defects (NTDs). Periconceptional folic acid supplementation is highly effective in reducing NTDs by 72%-86%. However, awareness of this essential prevention method remains limited in lower-income countries, contributing to a high rate of preventable birth defects. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the knowledge and factors associated with periconceptional folic acid supplementation among pregnant women attending the Antenatal care clinic at Dilla University Teach

Time to death and its predictors of mortality among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit in public general hospitals of central zone of Tigray, Ethiopia 2024: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality, accounting for nearly half of global under-five deaths, declines slower than post-neonatal mortality. Preterm birth, perinatal asphyxia, and infections are leading causes in Ethiopia, where skilled birth attendance, Kangaroo Mother Care, and Antenatal Care are prioritized. The Ethiopia Demographic Health Survey noted a rise in neonatal mortality from 29 to 30 deaths per 1000 live births (2016-2019). This trend highlights critical gaps in prevention and healthcare delivery. Targeted research is essential to reduce preventable deaths and enhance child survival. O

Monochorionic triamniotic (MCTA) triplet pregnancy complicated by TRAP sequence: successful management with ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation and favourable outcome.

We present a case of a 30-year-old G3P2L1 with a spontaneously conceived monochorionic triamniotic (MCTA) triplet pregnancy complicated by a Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence in one fetus. Early ultrasound at 10 weeks 4 days showed MCTA triplets with one hydropic fetus with alobar holoprosencephaly. A review scan at 12 weeks 6 days gestation showed that this fetus with holoprosencephaly had no heart. Colour Doppler showed a single artery in the acardiac fetus, suggestive of twin reverse arterial perfusion (TRAP sequence). Ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) was succe

Optimizing Eat, Sleep, Console in the NICU: a collaborative nursing education intervention.

BACKGROUND: The Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) model of care offers a patient-centered approach for managing neonatal opiate withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), reducing hospital stay, need for pharmacologic treatment, and costs compared to the traditional Finnegan scoring system. Favorable nursing knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) are critical to successful ESC implementation. A prior pilot survey in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) revealed inconsistent understanding and application of ESC, indicating a need for targeted education. This study assesses changes in NICU nursing KAP scores fol
