BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic wounds present a growing challenge in the aging population, resulting in an extended course of treatment and an increased influx of patients with recalcitrant wounds seeking admission to hospitals. Furthermore, the general trend in patient care is toward simple and inexpensive treatment methods, feasible in an outpatient setting with little material costs. This retrospective case study aims to elucidate the operative procedure and outcomes associated with hair follicle unit transplantation utilizing punch grafts from the scalp for the management of hard-to-heal wou

BACKGROUND: The IL-17 (interleukin 17) family consists of six structurally related pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely IL-17A to IL-17F. These cytokines have garnered significant scientific interest due to their pivotal role in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Notably, a specific subset of T-cells expresses IL-17 family members, highlighting their importance in immune responses against microbial infections.
INTRODUCTION: IL-17 cytokines play a critical role in host defense mechanisms by inducing cytokines and chemokines, recruiting neutrophils, modifying T-cell differentiation, and stimul

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atypical wounds comprise about 20% of all chronic wounds. Their diagnosis and treatment are challenging and require multidisciplinary cooperation. More knowledge is needed about the clinical characteristics and comorbidities of atypical wounds to enhance the treatment of these wounds.
METHODS: We studied clinical characteristics and comorbidities of the atypical wounds by using the patient data retrieved from the Oulu University Hospital patient database from the year 1996 to the end of 2019 with the following International Classification of Diseases codes: L88, L95.0, L9

Rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis are inflammatory joint disorders with an autoimmune pathogenesis and systemic involvement. The skin is one of the most frequently affected extraarticular sites with a number of manifestations or distinct diseases, including common conditions, such as rheumatoid nodules and psoriasis, and rare diseases like neutrophilic dermatoses. The latter are clinically characterised by polymorphic lesions, including pustules, bullae, abscesses, papules, nodules, plaques and ulcers, and histologically by neutrophil-rich inflammatory infiltrates. Inflammatory joint

The recent interest and elucidation of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway created new targets for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases (ISDs). JAK inhibitors in oral and topical formulations have shown beneficial results in psoriasis and alopecia areata. Patients suffering from other ISDs might also benefit from JAK inhibition. Given the development of specific JAK inhibitors, the expression patterns of JAKs in different ISDs needs to be clarified. We aimed to analyze the expression of JAK/STAT family members in a set of prevalent ISDs: psoriasis, lichen planus (LP), cutaneous lupus erythem

A 66-year-old Japanese male with a history of a rectal ulcer and rectovesical fistula following brachytherapy and radiotherapy for prostate cancer, who had undergone colostomy and vesicotomy presented with a painful peristomal ulcer of approximately 5 x 2.5cm adjacent to the direction of 6 o'clock of the stoma in his left lower abdomen. Although he was admitted to be treated with intravenous antibiotics and topical debridement, the ulcer was rapidly increasing. In the laboratory findings, WBC was 12,400/μL, CRP was 16.9 mg/dL, ESR was 105mm in the first hour. Contrast enhanced CT images showed

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been more common in Western Europe and North America. Initially IBD had been thought to be low in incidence among Sub-Saharan Africans. However, it is now being increasingly recognised in patients of African descent.
OBJECTIVE: A comparative assessment of the patterns of IBD in Accra from 1997 to 2011.
METHODS: This study used a retrospective design to access clinical details of follow-up patients attending the Gastroenterology Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra between February, 1997 and May, 2011. It was a comparative seven-year r

The management of hard-to-heal or chronic wounds places a high economic burden on healthcare services. This problem is exacerbated by the increasing age of the general population, an increasing diabetes population and a high prevalence of such wounds in the elderly, patients with diabetes and those with venous insufficiency. Standard treatments for such wounds, such as compression therapy in venous leg ulcers, debridement and wound care for diabetic foot ulcers, can still leave a significant population with non-healing wounds, resulting in extended hospital stays and reduced quality of life. There are many reasons for tissue breakdown in the leg, and each cause requires a different treatment to either correct the abnormality or to manage the symptoms that cause the patient distress. The pathway to appropriate treatment relies on a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology and good assessment. This article aims to provide a basic knowledge in how to recognize different leg ulcer types.

The skin involvement of the myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) can take the form of either a neoplastic infiltration or various non specific lesions. The occurrence of these lesions may be the presenting feature of the disease (MDS) or may herald its progression to acute leukemia. Recognition and early diagnosis have therapeutic and prognostic significance.

This study investigates shared molecular mechanisms between pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systematically evaluates the therapeutic potential of JAK inhibitors targeting this pathway. Despite the clear clinical comorbidity, the core inflammatory pathways driving cross-tissue associations between the two diseases remain unclear. Furthermore, systematic mechanistic evidence is lacking regarding whether JAK inhibitors act by regulating shared pathological pathways in patients with comorbidities. To address this, this study integrated PG skin and IBD intestinal

INTRODUCTION: Chronic, non-communicable inflammatory diseases (CIDs) affect a large portion of the population, imposing a significant morbidity, encompassing a substantial mortality. Thus, they are a major medical burden with a high unmet need. CIDs develop over the span of several years, and the risk of developing CIDs has been linked to genetic and environmental factors. Thus, modification of environmental factors is a promising approach for the prevention of CIDs. Among modifiable environmental factors that have been linked to the CID risk is nicotine dependence. However, for only few CIDs,

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a potentially life-threatening protozoan infection that presents with many clinical manifestations, including cutaneous, mucocutaneus and visceral forms. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), cutaneous leishmaniasis can persist or re-emerge due to treatment-induced immunosuppression. However, it remains unclear whether this severe opportunistic infection is primarily driven by medication-induced immunosuppression or other poorly understood immune-mediated mechanisms that increase susceptibility.

Schnitzler's syndrome is a rare autoinflammatory disorder characterized by interleukin-1ß-mediated and neutrophil-dominated inflammation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are web-like structures of decondensed chromatin, histones, and antimicrobial peptides released by neutrophils. NETs were initially described in the context of pathogen defense but are also involved in autoimmune-mediated skin diseases. Here, we assessed the role of neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis) in Schnitzler's syndrome. Immunofluorescence co-staining of myeloperoxidase and subnucleosomal complex was
