Volatile organic compounds from Pichia kluyveri inhibit the cacao pathogen Moniliophthora roreri.

Moniliophthora roreri is a major fungal pathogen that significantly reduces cacao yields in Colombia. Currently, farmers rely solely on fungicides for its control, and environmentally friendly alternatives remain limited. The objective of this study was to assess the antagonistic potential of yeasts isolated from diverse niches in Colombia against M. roreri as a first step toward developing sustainable biocontrol strategies. Initially, the pathogen was identified at the molecular level. Subsequently, seven yeast strains belonging to the genera Wickerhamomyces, Naganishia, Pichia, and Metschnik

Response of Rhizobium to Cd exposure: A volatile perspective.

The volatile metabolome of Rhizobium sp. strain E20-8 exposed to three concentrations of cadmium (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 μM) was screened using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time of flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToFMS), combined with headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME). Cd exposure induced a global increase in the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) both intra and extracellularly. Peak areas of several linear alkanes, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, terpenic and volatile sulfur compounds, and one ester (ethyl acetate), were especially increa

Phytochemical analysis with the antioxidant and aldose reductase inhibitory capacities of Tephrosia humilis aerial parts' extracts.

The aerial parts of Tephrosia humilis were tested about their antioxidant potential, their ability to inhibit the aldose/aldehyde reductase enzymes and their phenolic content. The plant material was exhaustively extracted with petroleum ether, dichloromethane and methanol, consecutively. The concentrated methanol extract was re-extracted, successively, with diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. All extracts showed significant antioxidant capacity, but the most effective was the ethyl acetate extract. As about the aldose reductase inhibition, all fractions, except the aqueous, were strong

Characterization of alcohol acetyltransferases in the ripe flesh of 'Monthong' and 'Chanthaburi 1' durians.

Durian is economically significant in Southeast Asia due to its distinctive aroma and palatability. During fruit ripening, the flesh generates a substantial quantity of esters and some sulfur-containing compounds. This study aimed to analyze the ester profiles and characteristics of alcohol acetyltransferase (AAT; EC. 2.3.1.84) in the ripe flesh of two Thai durian (Durio zibethinus Merr.) cultivars, 'Chanthaburi 1' (a hybrid cultivar with a soft aroma) and 'Monthong' (a renowned cultivar with a medium scent). The primary esters responsible for the aromatic compounds found in durian are ethyl-2

Effect of Capsaicin Stress on Aroma-Producing Properties of Lactobacillus plantarum CL-01 Based on E-Nose and GC-IMS.

Capsaicin stress, along with salt stress, could be considered the main stressors for lactic acid bacteria in traditional fermented pepper products. Until now, insufficient attention has been paid to salt stress, while the effect of capsaicin on the aroma-producing properties of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) is unclear. The present study attempted to illustrate the effect of capsaicin stress on the aroma-producing properties of L. plantarum CL-01 isolated from traditionally fermented peppers based on E-nose and GC-IMS. The results showed that E-nose could clearly distinguish the overal

In Situ Incorporation of Macromolecules in Zr-MOF Membranes for Separation of Organic Azeotropic Mixtures.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with adjustable angstrom-scale channels and versatile topological structures are promising for molecular separation. However, it remains a challenge to construct MOF membranes with precisely tuned pore sizes and tailored molecular affinity for achieving high-efficiency liquid molecular separation, particularly for organic azeotropic mixtures. Herein, we proposed an in situ macromolecule incorporation strategy to fabricate a Zr-MOF membrane with a tunable pore microenvironment for pervaporation separation of butanol-water and ethanol-ethyl acetate azeotro

Quantitative determination of n-butane metabolites in three cases of butane sniffing death.

Butane is an addictive volatile substance like toluene. We report three forensic autopsy cases of sudden death that occurred while sniffing n-butane and isobutane from portable gas cartridges. n-Butane and isobutane were detected in all three cases. In cases 1-3, n-butane concentrations in heart blood were 54.3, 25.5, and 30.7μg/mL, respectively. These concentrations were considered fatal according to the previous reports. In addition, n-butane metabolites (2-butanol and 2-butanone) were detected in cases 1 and 3 but not in case 2. Blood levels of 2-butanol and 2-butanone were 6.5 and 1.8μg/mL

Inhibitory effects of alcohols on thermolysin activity as examined using a fluorescent substrate.

Alcohols inhibit the thermolysin-catalyzed hydrolysis of N-[3-(2-furyl)acryloyl]-Gly-L-Leu-NH(2) and decrease the NaCl-induced activation of thermolysin in a concentration-dependent manner [K. Inouye et al. (1997) J. Biochem. 122, 358-364]. In this study, the inhibitory effects of alcohols on thermolysin activity were examined in detail using 10 different alcohols and a fluorescent substrate, (7-methoxycoumarin-4-yl) acetyl-L-Pro-L-Leu-Gly-L-Leu-[N(3)-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-L-2,3-diamino-propionyl]-L-Ala-L-Arg-NH(2). The inhibition by all alcohols examined is completely reversible, and thermolysi

Do Volatiles Affect Bacteria and Plants in the Same Way? Growth and Biochemical Response of Non-Stressed and Cd-Stressed Arabidopsis thaliana and Rhizobium E20-8.

Plant roots are colonized by rhizobacteria, and these soil microorganisms can not only stimulate plant growth but also increase tolerance to stress through the production of volatile organic compounds. However, little is known about the effect that these plant beneficial volatiles may have on bacteria. In this study, the effects on growth and oxidative status of different concentrations of three volatiles already reported to have a positive influence on plant growth (2-butanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2,3-butanediol) were determined in A. thaliana and Rhizobium sp. strain E20-8 via airborne e

The impact of the structuring of hydrotropes in water on the mesoscale solubilisation of a third hydrophobic component.

In the present contribution, the pre-structuring of binary mixtures of hydrotropes and H2O is linked to the solubilisation of poorly water miscible compounds. We have chosen a series of short-chain alcohols as hydrotropes and benzyl alcohol, limonene and a hydrophobic azo-dye (Disperse Red 13) as organic compounds to be dissolved. A very weak pre-structuring is found for ethanol/H2O and 2-propanol/H2O mixtures. Pre-structuring is most developed for binary 1-propanol/H2O and tert-butanol/H2O mixtures and supports the bicontinuity model of alcohol-rich and water-rich domains as already postulate

Extraction of Lipids from Chlorella saccharophila Using High-Pressure Homogenization Followed by Three Phase Partitioning.

Commercial exploitation of microalgae for biofuel and food ingredients is hindered due to laborious extraction protocols and use of hazardous chemicals. Production of lipids in the microalga grown in modified BG11 medium was evaluated to arrive at the appropriate harvesting conditions. The use of three phase partitioning (TPP) as a green approach for extraction of lipids from Chlorella saccharophila was investigated. Cells disrupted by probe sonication were used for separation of lipids by TPP. The TPP-optimized conditions of 30 % ammonium sulfate, using slurry/t-butanol of 1:0.75 for 60 min a

Supramolecular synthons in hydrates and solvates of lamotrigine: a tool for cocrystal design.

The molecule of anti-epileptic drug lamotrigine [LAM; 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine] is capable of the formation of multicomponent solids. Such an enhanced tendency is related to the diverse functionalities of the LAM chemical groups able to form hydrogen bonds. Two robust synthons are recognized in the supramolecular structure of LAM itself formed via N-H...N hydrogen bond: homosynthon, so-called aminopyridine dimer or synthon 1 [R22(8)] and larger homosynthon 2 [R32(8)]. The synthetic procedures for a new hydrate and 11 solvates of LAM (in the series: with acetone, ethano

Clay-Alcohol-Water Dispersions: Anomalous Viscosity Changes Due to Network Formation of Clay Nanosheets Induced by Alcohol Clustering.

Clay-alcohol-water ternary dispersions were compared with alcohol-water binary mixtures in terms of viscosity and optical absorbance. Aqueous clay dispersions to which lower alcohols (ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and tert-butanol) were added exhibited significant viscosity anomalies (maxima) when the alcohol content was 30-55 wt %, as well as optical absorbance anomalies (maxima). The maximum viscosity (ηmax) depended strongly on the clay content and varied between 300 and 8000 mPa·s, making it remarkably high compared with the viscosity anomalies (2 mPa·s) observed in alcohol-water binary

Photolysis of tolfenamic acid in aqueous and organic solvents: a kinetic study.

Tolfenamic acid (TA) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that was studied for its photodegradation in aqueous (pH 2.0-12.0) and organic solvents (acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol). TA follows first-order kinetics for its photodegradation, and the apparent first-order rate constants (k obs) are in the range of 0.65 (pH 12.0) to 6.94 × 10-2 (pH 3.0) min-1 in aqueous solution and 3.28 (1-butanol) to 7.69 × 10-4 (acetonitrile) min-1 in organic solvents. The rate-pH profile for TA photodegradation is an inverted V (∧) or V-top shape, indicating that the cationic form is

Hypolipidemic effect of n-butanol Extract from Asparagus officinalis L. in mice fed a high-fat diet.

During industrial processing of Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.), around half of each spear is discarded. However, these discarded asparagus (by-products) might be used as food supplements for their potential therapeutic effects. This study evaluated the hypolipidemic effect of n-butanol extract (BEA) from asparagus by-products in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Continuous HFD feeding caused hyperlipidemia, oxidative stress and liver damage in mice. Interestingly, while BEA significantly decreased the levels of body weight gain, serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholester
