The Health Professions Admission Test (HPAT) score and leaving certificate results can independently predict academic performance in medical school: do we need both tests?

A recent study raised concerns regarding the ability of the health professions admission test (HPAT) Ireland to improve the selection process in Irish medical schools. We aimed to establish whether performance in a mock HPAT correlated with academic success in medicine. A modified HPAT examination and a questionnaire were administered to a group of doctors and medical students. There was a significant correlation between HPAT score and college results (r2: 0.314, P = 0.018, Spearman Rank) and between leaving cert score and college results (r2: 0.306, P = 0.049, Spearman Rank). There was no cor

Predicting Academic Difficulties and National Physical Therapy Examination Success in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: The Role of Admissions Variables and Course-Specific Performance.

INTRODUCTION: The rise in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs has coincided with a decrease in applicants, creating challenges in maintaining admissions standards while ensuring student success. This study aimed to determine whether admissions variables predict academic difficulty and to assess their relationship with National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) outcomes. REVIEW OF LITERATURE: A literature review suggests that undergraduate grade point average (GPA), particularly prerequisite GPA, can predict DPT performance and NPTE success, although findings are inconsistent. This stu

The association between PM2.5, greenness (NDVI) and road noise exposures and the academic performance of state school pupils in England: a National Pupil Database study.

Research suggests that exposure to air pollution, greenspace and noise may affect children's academic performance, however further large-scale, longitudinal evidence is needed. This study quantifies the relationship between PM2.5 and children's academic performance while considering the effects of greenness and road noise using the National Pupil Database. 1,048,167 children starting state school in England at ages 4-5 years in 2005 and 2006 were followed for 12 years. Annual average environmental exposures at home and school were measured since the start of formal education up until each acad

Prevalence of migraine headaches and their impact on the academic performance of Sudanese medical students using ID-Migraine test as a screening tool: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine-and episodic headache-is one of the most common types of primary headache. Migraine is considered a serious health problem that affects the quality of life. During university life, students often report increased levels of stress, depression, anxiety, and irregular sleep, all of which are associated with migraines. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of migraine headaches among medical campus students at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. Based on available data, migraine is on the rise in both general populations as well as in university students. METHODS: This is a

Effects of Neighborhood-level Data on Performance and Algorithmic Equity of a Model That Predicts 30-day Heart Failure Readmissions at an Urban Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic data may improve predictions of clinical events. However, owing to structural racism, algorithms may not perform equitably across racial subgroups. Therefore, we sought to compare the predictive performance overall, and by racial subgroup, of commonly used predictor variables for heart failure readmission with and without the area deprivation index (ADI), a neighborhood-level socioeconomic measure. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1316 Philadelphia residents discharged with a primary diagnosis of congestive heart failure from the Univ

Effect of a 20-week physical activity intervention on selective attention and academic performance in children living in disadvantaged neighborhoods: A cluster randomized control trial.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of a 20-week school-based physical activity intervention program on academic performance and selective attention among disadvantaged South African primary school children. DESIGN: Cluster randomized control trial. METHODS: The study cohort included 663 children from eight primary schools, aged 8-13 years. Data assessment took place between February 2015 and May 2016 following the implementation of a 20-week school-based physical activity program. The impact of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and specific learning disorders on academic performance in Spanish children from a low-middle- and a high-income population.

INTRODUCTION: Past research has demonstrated that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorders (SLD), and socioeconomic status (SES) affect a host of educational outcomes. However, there are no studies examining whether SES moderates the association between these neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) and the academic achievement of children and adolescents. The present investigation examined the impact of ADHD and SLD on academic performance in 1,287 Spanish students aged 5-17 from a low-middle (LM)- and a high-income population, when adjusted for comorbidity and de

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerve conduction parameters vary between individuals and may reflect differences in peripheral neurophysiological function. This exploratory observational study examined whether ulnar nerve conduction measures and reaction time were associated with academic indicators among male medical students. The study was designed to provide preliminary evidence regarding possible associations between peripheral electrophysiological measures and academic performance among medical students. Mental Health Status and Academic Performance of Graduating Nursing Students during COVID-19 Pandemic in a Government School in Leyte, Mental Health Program Model: A Correlational Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education worldwide, prompting a rapid shift to emergency remote teaching that challenged students' learning and mental health. Nursing students, in particular, faced heightened pressures due to the suspension or online adaptation of essential clinical experiences, alongside the need to master theoretical and practical competencies. Emerging evidence indicates that such stressors adversely affect students' emotional and psychological well-being, potentially influencing academic outcomes. BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common mental and behavioral disorder in school-aged children. This study evaluated the effect of osmotic-release oral system (OROS) methylphenidate (MPH) on cognitive function and academic performance of Chinese school-aged children with ADHD. METHODS: This 12-week, prospective, multicenter, open-label, self-controlled study enrolled 153 Chinese school-aged children with ADHD and 41 non-ADHD children. Children with ADHD were treated with once-daily OROS-MPH (18 mg, 36 mg, or 54 mg). The primary endpoints were Inattention
