L‒asparaginase activity in some endophytic fungi: Glutaminase‒free and low urease co‒activities.

In this study, L‒asparaginase production in several endophytic fungi was evaluated along with their L‒glutaminase and urease co-activities. The effect of L‒asparagine and different culture media on L-asparaginase production were also evaluated. Among the 62 investigated isolates, 49 isolates exhibited L‒asparaginase activity, and the maximum zone index (6.58) was observed in Cladosporium perangustum EL1. Evaluation of L‒glutaminase and urease co-activities in L‒asparaginase-positive isolates screened 19 isolates with no L‒glutaminase activity and four isolates with minimum urease production. L

Exploring wild Thymus sp. (L.) chemotypes across Pistoia Mountains provides thyme essential oil and hydrolate inhibiting fungal growth on paper.

Thymus sp. (L.) encompasses over 500 aromatic species distributed in the Mediterranean area, in dry, rocky environments up to 1800 m above sea level. Plants of Thymus sp. (L.) from the Serpyllum group, growing in five areas of the Pistoia Mountains, were georeferenced and sampled for a chemical characterization of the terpene content. Fresh biomass was collected to distill thyme essential oil, and the derived hydrolate was recovered as byproduct of the process. The antifungal efficacy of the chemically characterized thyme essential oil and hydrolate was evaluated on two fungal biodeteriogens t

Bioassay-Guided Fractionation Networking for Discovery of Biofungicides from Cultivated Salvia canariensis.

Considering the detrimental impacts of the current pesticides on the biotic components of the biosphere, the development of novel pesticides is vital. Plant-derived biopesticides have emerged as popular alternatives to create a safer and more sustainable agriculture model. This study aims to validate the previous bioguided fractionation of endemic Canary Islands sage, Salvia canariensis, as a potential source of botanical pesticides using a cultivation process. Accordingly, the bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of cultivated S. canariensis on the phytopathoge

Droplet-based microfluidics platform for antifungal analysis against filamentous fungi.

Fungicides are extensively used in agriculture to control fungal pathogens which are responsible for significant economic impact on plant yield and quality. The conventional antifungal screening techniques, such as water agar and 96-well plates, are based on laborious protocols and bulk analysis, restricting the analysis at the single spore level and are time consuming. In this study, we present a droplet-based microfluidic platform that enables antifungal analysis of single spores of filamentous fungus Alternaria alternata. A droplet-based viability assay was developed, allowing the germinati

Prevalence of Foliar Diseases on Muskmelon (Cucumis melo var. melo) in South Carolina.

Muskmelons (Cucumis melo var. melo) grown in the eastern United States are affected by several foliar diseases caused by fungi and an oomycete. The objective of this survey of muskmelon production regions in South Carolina was to determine the prevalence of foliar diseases on spring crops to refine fungicide recommendations. In total, 34 fields from 21 growers in 10 counties were sampled using stratified cluster sampling. A total of 20, 20, and 40 diseased leaves were collected in each field in 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively, along four transects forming a square of 1225 or 2,500 m2. After

Survey of Sensitization to Common Fungi in an Allergic Dog Population: The Need for Further Focus on Sensitization and Allergy to Fungi in Veterinary Medicine.

Most fungal species are commensals and non-pathogenic to plants, humans, or animals. However, several species of the Alternaria, Aspergillus, Trichophyton, and Microsporum genera are common causes of disease, even for immunocompetent individuals. Besides mucosal damage, fungi may contribute to a skin barrier impairment, favoring sensitization and allergy development. A total of 68 allergic dogs were selected from a veterinary dermatology and allergy outpatient consultation for conditions related to both Malassezia overgrowth and other fungal complications. The allergy diagnosis was made throug

Microbial degradation of low-density polyethylene by Neopestalotiopsis phangngaensis.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been commercially used and accumulated as plastic solid waste. LDPE has also been found to be a non-degradable waste for decades and found as a pollution source in the environment. In this study, 65 fungi were screened for their biodegradation of LDPE. The fungi Neopestalotiopsis phangngaensis, Alternaria burnsii, Alternaria pseudoeichhorniae, and Arthrinium sacchari showed significant potential in LDPE biodegradation. These fungi were individually cultured with an LDPE sheet as a carbon source for 90 days. A maximum weight loss of the LDPE sheet was detecte

Differential Regulation of Allergic Airway Inflammation by Acetylcholine.

Acetylcholine (ACh) from neuronal and non-neuronal sources plays an important role in the regulation of immune responses and is associated with the development of several disease pathologies. We have previously demonstrated that group 2 innate lymphoid cell (ILC2)-derived ACh is required for optimal type 2 responses to parasitic infection and therefore sought to determine whether this also plays a role in allergic inflammation. RoraCre+ChatLoxP mice (in which ILC2s cannot synthesize ACh) were exposed to an allergenic extract of the fungus Alternaria alternata, and immune responses in the airwa

Sensitization to fungal allergens: Resolved and unresolved issues.

Exposure and sensitization to fungal allergens can promote the development and worsening of allergic diseases. Although numerous species of fungi have been associated with allergic diseases in the literature, the significance of fungi from the genera Alternaria, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Malassezia has been well documented. However, it should be emphasized that the contribution of different fungal allergens to allergic diseases is not identical, but species-specific. Alternaria and Cladosporium species are considered to be important outdoor allergens, and sensitization and ex

Chemosensitization of plant pathogenic fungi to agricultural fungicides.

A common consequence of using agricultural fungicides is the development of resistance by fungal pathogens, which undermines reliability of fungicidal effectiveness. A potentially new strategy to aid in overcoming or minimizing this problem is enhancement of pathogen sensitivity to fungicides, or "chemosensitization." Chemosensitization can be accomplished by combining a commercial fungicide with a certain non- or marginally fungicidal substance at levels where, alone, neither compound would be effective. Chemosensitization decreases the probability of the pathogen developing resistance, reduc

Concordance between different methods of detecting fungal-specific IgE antibody in asthma.

Documenting fungal sensitization plays a pivotal diagnostic role in asthma endotypes. Diagnosis relies heavily on detecting fungal-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE), yet variability in allergen representation, cross-reactivity, and assay performance complicates standardization. Although ImmunoCAP is regarded as the reference method, many commercial kits are available worldwide, with varying accuracy. A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework. Literature searches in PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest MEDLINE identified studies comparing fungal sIgE detection kits.

Advances in automatic airborne fungal spore monitoring: detection-efficiency test of the BAA500.

Fungal spores are a major component of ambient bioaerosols, contributing to environmental pollution relevant for human health, agriculture, and ecosystem management. Timely monitoring is critical, as spores can rapidly induce infections or allergic responses. Conventional Hirst-type samplers rely on time-consuming microscopic analysis, limiting near real-time reporting. Automated measurement systems offer an alternative, although their counting efficiency across fungal spore sizes and morphologies remains unclear. This study evaluates the performance of the BAA500 and Hirst-type sampler for fi
