BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is associated with structural differences in ocular biometrics, but existing studies often lack long-term follow-ups. This study compares three-year changes in ocular biometric components in amblyopic and non-amblyopic eyes.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort, study data were collected in 2015 and 2018 in Shahroud, northeast Iran. The sample comprised 4968 primary students (9935 eyes), including 4931 non-amblyopic students (9893 eyes) and 37 students with amblyopia (42 eyes). Axial length, keratometry, central corneal thickness, lens thickness, pupil diameter, anterior

Amblyopia, long considered untreatable in adults, may be responsive to Electromagnetic Stimulation (EMS) techniques to enhance neural plasticity. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of EMS in treating adult amblyopia. A systematic literature review was conducted across online databases for prospective studies, clinical trials, or case series evaluating the effects of EMS on animal or human models of amblyopia. The primary outcomes of interest were visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, stereopsis, and visual evoked potentials. Of 34 initially identified studies, 20 met the inclusion cr

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is a developmental disorder of the visual cortex that causes deficits in visual acuity and shape perception. The loss of visual acuity is thought to originate from weakened cortical responses to stimuli. Here, we provide evidence for a similar mechanism to explain distortions in shape perception. We introduce a computational model that simulates perceptual distortions of grating patterns drawn by humans with amblyopia (Barrett et al., 2003). The model simulates a large variety of distortions by performing a weighted sum of rectified sinusoidal gratings (average, 3.3 gratin

We herein report a case of a 4-year-old female patient who presented with anisometropic amblyopia with initial visual acuity recorded at 20/400 OD and 20/100 OS. The patient was recommended for patching. Eighteen months later, the patient presented with visual acuity of 20/60 OD and 20/80 and reverse amblyopia was noted. In settings of amblyopia, where alternate patching may be used, it is most likely that reverse amblyopia, if present, will affect the more myopic eye. However, unexpectedly, in this case, reverse amblyopia occurred in the less myopic eye. With discontinuation of occlusion ther

Background and Objectives: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by interocular suppression of visual input, affecting visual acuity, stereopsis, contrast sensitivity, and other visual functions. Conventional treatment comprises occlusion of the sound eye. In recent years, novel therapies that deploy perceptual learning (PL) principles have been introduced. The purpose of this study is to assess the latest scientific data on this topic. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, we conducted a literature search for relevant studies published during the previous 4 years (2020-2023). R

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is the most frequent cause for decreased vision in childhood. Important risk factors for amblyopia (ARF) are refractive errors. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of the Plusoptix Autorefractor A09 (POA09) to detect refractive ARF.
METHOD: This prospective non-blinded, one-armed study was conducted between February 2012 and September 2015. Children aged 6 months to 12 years were screened in kindergarten and schools for refractive errors. Thresholds for screening failure were hyperopia ≥ 3.5 diopters (D), myopia ≥ 3.0 D, anisometropia ≥ 1.5 D and astigma

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a major health problem with an estimated 2% to 4% of the population affected. Screening combined with corrective measures, such as correction of refractive error and occlusion of the dominant eye, could reduce this prevalence. A new pediatric vision scanner, the blinq (Rebion, Boston, MA), studies the foveolar quality of fixation of each eye during binocular viewing. Based on the initial premise that poor quality foveolar or non-foveolar fixation is indicative of strabismus and, potentially of amblyopia, this study evaluates the effectiveness of the blinq screening device

The gold-standard treatment for childhood amblyopia remains patching or penalizing the fellow eye, resulting in an average of about a one line (0.1 logMAR) improvement in visual acuity following ≈120 h of patching in children 3-8 years old. However, compliance with patching and other treatment options is often poor. In contrast, fast-paced action video games can be highly engaging, and have been shown to yield broad-based improvements in vision and attention in adult amblyopia. Here, we pilot-tested a custom-made action video game to treat children with amblyopia. Twenty-one (n = 21) children

Amblyopia, which usually occurs during early childhood and results in poor or blurred vision, is a disorder of the visual system that is characterized by a deficiency in an otherwise physically normal eye or by a deficiency that is out of proportion with the structural or functional abnormalities of the eye. Our previous study demonstrated alterations in the spontaneous activity patterns of some brain regions in individuals with anisometropic amblyopia compared to subjects with normal vision. To date, it remains unknown whether patients with amblyopia show characteristic alterations in the fun

Amblyopia is a visual impairment secondary to abnormal visual experience (e.g., strabismus, anisometropia, form deprivation) during early childhood that cannot be corrected immediately by glasses alone. It is the most common cause of monocular blindness globally. Patching remains the mainstay of treatment, but it is not always successful and there are also compliance and recurrence issues. Because amblyopia is a neural disorder that results from abnormal stimulation of the brain during the critical periods of visual development, it is essential to understand the neural mechanisms of amblyopia
