Epidemiology of Animal Bites and Factors Associated With Delays in Initiating Post-exposure Prophylaxis for Rabies Prevention Among Animal Bite Cases: A Population-based Study.

OBJECTIVES: One way to prevent deaths due to rabies is the timely utilization of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Therefore, in addition to an understanding of the epidemiological distribution of animal bites, it is necessary to explore the factors leading to delays in PEP initiation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Iran in 2011, and included 7097 cases of animal bites recorded at the Rabies Treatment Center of the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences using the census method. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with delays in PEP. RESULTS: Among

Frequency of Animal Leptospirosis in the Southern United States and the Implications for Human Health.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with symptoms in humans and animals, ranging from subclinical to serious and fatal. The disease occurs worldwide, but there is limited recognition of the public and animal health risks it poses in the southern United States. A systematic review of the frequency of animal leptospirosis in 17 states and jurisdictions covering the southern continental United States was performed to advance our understanding of the pathogen's distribution and identify transmission patterns that could be targeted for prevention efforts. Fifty-two articles, spanning >100 years, me

MR Imaging of Pulmonary Surfactant Distribution in a Preclinical Neonatal Lung Model.

The administration of exogenous surfactant is essential for many premature infants to compensate for pulmonary immaturity and the absence of endogenous surfactant at birth. Exogenous surfactant delivery techniques are continually being refined to improve the management of these infants, with the goal of increasing therapeutic efficacy and decreasing the invasiveness of delivery protocols. Imaging is one of the tools available to achieve these goals. In this study, we established and applied an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol in a rabbit animal model to determine the intrapulmonary di

Sex-specific immune alterations in mice following long-term simulated microgravity and chronic irradiation.

Given NASA's plans for manned lunar and Mars missions, it is critical to assess the risk of splenic immune dysregulation by using ground-based models of simulated microgravity (SMG) and/or chronic irradiation (CIR). To address this, C57BL/6 J mice of both sexes exposed to SMG and/or CIR for 29 days and alterations in immune cell distribution, function and phenotype were assessed. SMG and/or CIR altered a greater variety of immune cells in both lymphoid and myeloid lineages in female mice than in male mice; the function of splenic CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, and CD19 + B cells altered in a se

Biomechanical and Cortical Control of Tongue Movements During Chewing and Swallowing.

Tongue function is vital for chewing and swallowing and lingual dysfunction is often associated with dysphagia. Better treatment of dysphagia depends on a better understanding of hyolingual morphology, biomechanics, and neural control in humans and animal models. Recent research has revealed significant variation among animal models in morphology of the hyoid chain and suprahyoid muscles which may be associated with variation in swallowing mechanisms. The recent deployment of XROMM (X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology) to quantify 3D hyolingual kinematics has revealed new details on flex

Elements on the move: How ungulate migration expands Alpine biogeochemical footprints.

Through depositing waste products, animals influence the spatial distribution of elements across landscapes. Yet the relationship between animal movement and element distribution remains poorly characterized. We developed a spatially explicit agent-based model to test how migratory versus resident red deer (Cervus elaphus) influence nitrogen redistribution across an alpine landscape in the Central-Eastern Italian Alps. Specifically, we asked how both local-scale and landscape-scale movement alter the spatial extent and magnitude of nitrogen deposition. We parameterized our model with GPS telem

Application of knowledge-driven spatial modelling approaches and uncertainty management to a study of Rift Valley fever in Africa.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies that have investigated uncertainties surrounding the scientific community's knowledge of the geographical distribution of major animal diseases. This is particularly relevant to Rift Valley fever (RVF), a zoonotic disease causing destructive outbreaks in livestock and man, as the geographical range of the disease is widening to involve previously unaffected regions. In the current study we investigate the application of methods developed in the decision sciences: multiple criteria decision making using weighted linear combination and ordered weighted averages,

Intraspecific competition in Tridacna crocea, a burrowing bivalve.

Intraspecific competition for space and light occurred when Tridacna crocea burrowed into coralline substratum of boulders on leeward coral reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef near Townsville, Australia. Intensity of competition was linearly related to clam density. Above about 200 clams/m2, all clams physically contacted one another and all shells sustained damage. Mortality in isolated populations due to intraspecific competition was estimated at 40%. Principles of intraspecific competition in plants were tested for applicability to T. crocea populations. Juvenile mortality due to compet

Exploring the systemic delivery of a poorly water-soluble model drug to the retina using PLGA nanoparticles.

During the drug development process, many pharmacologically active compounds are discarded because of poor water solubility, but nanoparticle-based formulations are increasingly proposed as a solution for this problem. We therefore studied the distribution of nanoparticulate carriers and the delivery of their poorly water-soluble cargo to a structure of the central nervous system, the retina, under naive and pathological conditions. The lipophilic fluorescent dye coumarin 6 (Cou6) was encapsulated into poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) PLGA nanoparticles (NPs). After intravenous administration in

Recombinant human tripeptidyl peptidase-1 infusion to the monkey CNS: safety, pharmacokinetics, and distribution.

CLN2 disease is caused by deficiency in tripeptidyl peptidase-1 (TPP1), leading to neurodegeneration and death. The safety, pharmacokinetics (PK), and CNS distribution of recombinant human TPP1 (rhTPP1) were characterized following a single intracerebroventricular (ICV) or intrathecal-lumbar (IT-L) infusion to cynomolgus monkeys. Animals received 0, 5, 14, or 20mg rhTPP1, ICV, or 14 mg IT-L, in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) vehicle. Plasma and CSF were collected for PK analysis. Necropsies occurred at 3, 7, and 14 days post-infusion. CNS tissues were sampled for rhTPP1 distribution. TP

Ruminant brucellosis in Upper Egypt (2005-2008).

Brucellosis is endemic among humans and ruminant in Egypt and recent reports suggest that its incidence may be increasing. In this study we describe the frequency of brucellosis among different ruminant species in Upper Egypt and its spatial distribution using the data generated by a large-scale control campaign undertaken between 2005 and 2008. A total of 120,090 individual animals of different ruminant species were tested during the campaign. The true proportions of brucellosis were estimated as 0.79% (CI: 0.71%-0.87%), 0.13% (CI: 0.08%-0.18%), 1.16% (1.05%-1.27%) and 0.44% (0.34%-0.54%) amo

Management of obesity--the clinical nutritionist's experience.

Overweight patients are common in veterinary medicine, just as they are in human medicine. Although animals also suffer from diseases in the general categories of cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and digestive diseases, many of the specific problems of obese humans do not afflict obese pets. Of tumors, only adenocarcinoma of the breast is a significant problem in dogs and cats. Moreover, a high intake of dietary fat and table food has been reported to be protective in adult dogs; in women, increasing dietary fat has been associated with increased breast cancer risk. Two experimental studies in

Human olfactory mesenchymal stromal cell transplants promote remyelination and earlier improvement in gait co-ordination after spinal cord injury.

Autologous cell transplantation is a promising strategy for repair of the injured spinal cord. Here we have studied the repair potential of mesenchymal stromal cells isolated from the human olfactory mucosa after transplantation into a rodent model of incomplete spinal cord injury. Investigation of peripheral type remyelination at the injury site using immunocytochemistry for P0, showed a more extensive distribution in transplanted compared with control animals. In addition to the typical distribution in the dorsal columns (common to all animals), in transplanted animals only, P0 immunolabelli

Mapping the global prevalence of bovine viral diarrhoea virus infection and its associated mitigation programmes.

The aim of this study was to collect information on the global distribution of the prevalence of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) and respective mitigation programmes, using a questionnaire and literature review to provide as complete a picture of the worldwide BVDV situation as possible. This study collated information on 107 countries with respect to mitigation activities and 88 countries regarding BVDV infections during the observation period (1960-2017). A heterogeneous epidemiological situation for both BVDV prevalence and the presence of mitigation programmes was observed. The results

Animal Reservoirs of Zoonotic Tungiasis in Endemic Rural Villages of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Animal tungiasis is believed to increase the prevalence and parasite burden in humans. Animal reservoirs of Tunga penetrans differ among endemic areas and their role in the epidemiology of tungiasis had never been investigated in Uganda. METHODS AND FINDINGS: To identify the major animal reservoirs of Tunga penetrans and their relative importance in the transmission of tungiasis in Uganda, a cross sectional study was conducted in animal rearing households in 10 endemic villages in Bugiri District. T. penetrans infections were detected in pigs, dogs, goats and a cat. The prevalence

The nervous supply to the nasal cavity of the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus).

The Bactrian camel is an important domestic animal in some of the desert and semi-desert areas of the world. However, there is no detailed report about the nervous supply to the nasal cavity of the Bactrian camel. In the present study, seven heads of adult Bactrian camels were collected and the nerve distribution in the nasal cavity was dissected grossly. The results demonstrated that the nerves supplying to the nasal cavity included the olfactory nerve, the ethmoidal nerve from the ophthalmic nerve, and the caudal nerve from the maxillary nerve. The general patterns of nervous distribution in

Spatial-temporal risk factors in the occurrence of rabies in Mexico.

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that affects livestock worldwide. The distribution of rabies is highly correlated with the distribution of the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus, the main vector of the disease. In this study, climatic, topographic, livestock population, vampire distribution and urban and rural zones were used to estimate the risk for presentation of cases of rabies in Mexico by co- Kriging interpolation. The highest risk for the presentation of cases is in the endemic areas of the disease, i.e. the States of Yucatán, Chiapas, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, San Luis Potosí,
