Ingestive responses to administration of stress hormones in baboons.

Experimental stress and the administration of the stress hormone ACTH have been reported to stimulate sodium appetite in many nonprimate species. Experiments were conducted to determine whether prolonged intracerebroventricular infusions of the neuropeptides corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and urocortin (Ucn), or systemic administration of ACTH, affected ingestive behaviors in a nonhuman primate, the baboon. Intracerebroventricular infusions of CRF or Ucn significantly decreased daily food intake. The decrease with Ucn continued into the postinfusion period. These infusions did not alter

The behavioral neurochemistry of motivation: methodological and conceptual issues in studies of the dynamic activity of nucleus accumbens dopamine.

Considerable experimental and clinical evidence links forebrain dopamine (DA) systems to the performance of motor activities and to motivational processes. Much of the support for this conclusion was obtained from studies utilizing lesions or drugs to manipulate aspects of central dopaminergic function. Although such experiments yield important information concerning the behavioral consequences of interference with DA systems in brain, they do not demonstrate any relation between the dynamic activity of DA neurons and the level or type of motor function exhibited by the organism. Was it something I ate? Understanding the bidirectional interaction of migraine and appetite neural circuits.

Migraine attacks can involve changes of appetite: while fasting or skipping meals are often reported triggers in susceptible individuals, hunger or food craving are reported in the premonitory phase. Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest and recognition of the importance of studying these overlapping fields of neuroscience, which has led to novel findings. The data suggest additional studies are needed to unravel key neurobiological mechanisms underlying the bidirectional interaction between migraine and appetite. Herein, we review information about the metabolic migraine phe

Self-restraint spillover: Inhibitory control disrupts appetite regulation among ruminators.

OBJECTIVE: People can use inhibitory control to temporarily inhibit their personal preferences to achieve their long-term goals. According to the ego fixation model (Koole et al., 2014), ruminators have difficulties relaxing inhibitory control, leading them to continue inhibiting their personal needs, even when this is no longer required by the situation. Inhibitory control may thus disrupt healthy appetite regulation among ruminators. METHOD: Among 324 Dutch undergraduate students (218 women; Mage  = 21.5), different inhibitory control states were manipulated by varying whether or not partic

Examining the momentary relationships between body checking and eating disorder symptoms in women with anorexia nervosa.

Body checking is common among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and increases risk for dietary restriction. However, no study has examined whether body checking increases the immediate risk for engaging in other harmful weight loss behaviors, or whether this relationship is moderated by person-level traits. The current study utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine whether (a) body checking predicted rapid use of weight loss behaviors, and (b) whether eating-related obsessionality/compulsivity moderated this relationship. Women with full or subthreshold anorexia nervosa (

Odorant receptors for floral- and plant-derived volatiles in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Adult mosquitoes require regular sugar meals, usually floral nectar, to survive and flourish in natural habitats. Both males and females locate potential sugar sources using sensory proteins called odorant receptors activated by plant volatiles that facilitate orientation toward flowers or honeydew. The Yellow Fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762), possesses a large repertoire of odorant receptors, many of which are likely to support floral odor detection and nectar-seeking. In this study, we have employed a heterologous expression system and the two-electrode voltage clamping techniq

Phasic dopamine release in the medial prefrontal cortex enhances stimulus discrimination.

Phasic dopamine (DA) release is believed to guide associative learning. Most studies have focused on projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the striatum, and the action of DA in other VTA target regions remains unclear. Using optogenetic activation of VTA projections, we examined DA function in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We found that mice perceived optogenetically induced DA release in mPFC as neither rewarding nor aversive, and did not change their previously learned behavior in response to DA transients. However, repetitive temporal pairing of an auditory conditioned

Altered sensitization patterns to sweet food stimuli in patients recovered from anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Recent studies show that higher-order appetitive neural circuitry may contribute to restricted eating in anorexia nervosa (AN) and overeating in bulimia nervosa (BN). The purpose of this study was to determine whether sensitization effects might underlie pathologic eating behavior when a taste stimulus is administered repeatedly. Recovered AN (RAN, n=14) and BN (RBN, n=15) subjects were studied in order to avoid the confounding effects of altered nutritional state. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measured higher-order brain response to repeated tastes of sucrose (caloric) and sucr

Repeated exposure of adult rats to transient oxidative stress induces various long-lasting alterations in cognitive and behavioral functions.

Exposure of neonates to oxidative stress may increase the risk of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia in adulthood. However, the effects of moderate oxidative stress on the adult brain are not completely understood. To address this issue, we systemically administrated 2-cyclohexen-1-one (CHX) to adult rats to transiently reduce glutathione levels. Repeated administration of CHX did not affect the acquisition or motivation of an appetitive instrumental behavior (lever pressing) rewarded by a food outcome under a progressive ratio schedule. In addition, response discrimination and revers

[The role of muscarinic cholinoreceptors in the retrieval of the instrumental food conditioned reflex in cats].

It was demonstrated in cat experiments that impairment of the retrieval of appetitive instrumental conditioning observed after systemic administration of antagonists of muscarinic central cholinoreceptors scopolamine (a nonselective M1 antagonist) and trihexyphenidyl (relatively selective M1 antagonist) could be connected with central and peripheral side effects of these antagonists. It was established that in case of the absence of side effects (low doses of trihexyphenidyl, 1 mg/kg) the blockade of M1-cholinoreceptors led either to selective fall-off of the motor instrumental reaction with i

Sex-specific effects of appetite suppressants on stereotypy in rats.

This study investigated the sex-specific effects of commonly prescribed appetite suppressants on body weight and the manifestation of motor side effects, specifically stereotypy. Employing video recordings and DeepLabCut (DLC) for precise behavioral quantification, we analyzed stereotypy, defined as purposeless, repetitive motor behaviors, in male and female rats. Under control (saline) conditions, male rats exhibited a greater propensity for weight gain compared to females. However, in contrast, female rats demonstrated greater and more homogenous weight loss than males following the administ

Reduced sodium appetite and increased oxytocin gene expression in mutant mice lacking beta-endorphin.

Central opioid and oxytocinergic systems have been involved in the regulatory control of sodium appetite. In addition, previous studies support the existence of a functional interaction between opioid peptides and oxytocinergic pathways, and suggest that beta-endorphin neurons would modulate the activity of central oxytocinergic pathways, its pituitary secretion and sodium appetite. To investigate the role of this opioid peptide in the control of oxytocin (OT) synthesis and sodium appetite regulation we used mice with gene dosage-dependent variations in brain beta-endorphin content, expressing

Effects of Ketone Ester Supplementation on Cognition and Appetite in Individuals with and Without Metabolic syndrome: A Randomized Trial.

There are currently no non-pharmacological solutions to combat the appetite and cognitive dysfunctions associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Ketosis may be a potential solution, though the restrictive nature of dietary ketosis limits its long-term utility. Oral administration of exogenous ketone esters (KE) independently induces ketosis, eliciting hyperketonemia without the need for prolonged dietary restrictions. However, the acute effects of oral KEs on appetite and cognition have not been evaluated in individuals with MetS. For this randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, matched

Associations between individual depressive symptoms and immunometabolic characteristics in major depression.

Inflammation and metabolic dysregulations are likely to underlie atypical, energy-related depressive symptoms such as appetite and sleep alterations. Indeed, increased appetite was previously identified as a core symptom of an immunometabolic subtype of depression. The aim of this study was 1) to replicate the associations between individual depressive symptoms and immunometabolic markers, 2) to extend previous findings with additional markers, and 3) to evaluate the relative contribution of these markers to depressive symptoms. We analyzed data from 266 persons with major depressive disorder

Harnessing a snake metabolite to control food intake.

Many diverse signals regulate feeding behavior. In Nature Metabolism, Xiao et al. describe the discovery of a new appetite-suppressant metabolite found in pythons, which is also conserved in humans. This research broadens our understanding of postprandial physiology and raises new questions related to metabolic pathology and therapy.

Topiramate effectiveness in Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome is a neurologic disorder caused by a mutation on chromosome 15. It is characterized by short stature, obesity, mild-to-moderate mental retardation, and multiple behavior problems including mood, self-abusive behavior, and compulsive-eating disorder. These behaviors have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of patients with Prader-Willi syndrome. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a new antiepileptic medication, topiramate, on behavior, mood, and compulsive-eating disorder associated with Prader-Willi syndrome. Recent studies have indicated that top

Cu disrupts the olfacto-retinal centrifugal pathway and mediates reduced feeding-related behavior in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Cu is an environmental trace metal, but excess Cu is known to disrupt chemosensory functions. However, the chronic effects on the olfacto-retinal centrifugal (ORC) pathway and feeding-related behavior of Cu in fish remain largely uncharacterized. Zebrafish (Danio rerio, six-month-old) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of Cu (i.e., 1.6, 5.6, 16, and 35 μg L-1; Cont, Cu-L, Cu-M, and Cu-H) over a 30-day period. Behavioral, neurochemical, and transcriptional biomarkers were measured to evaluate toxic effects of Cu. The results demonstrated that Cu significantly accumulated in

Both neuropeptide Y knockdown and Y1 receptor inhibition modulate CART-mediated appetite control.

Amphetamine (AMPH)-induced appetite suppression has been attributed to its inhibition of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-containing neurons in the hypothalamus. This study examined whether hypothalamic cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART)-containing neurons and NPY Y1 receptor (Y1R) were involved in the action of AMPH. Rats were treated daily with AMPH for four days, and changes in feeding behavior and expression levels of NPY, CART, and POMC were assessed and compared. The results showed that both feeding behavior and NPY expression decreased during AMPH treatment, with the biggest reduc
