Since 1988, WHO has been collecting standardized information on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in adult communities worldwide. Within the age range 30-64 years, diabetes and IGT were found to be absent or rare in some traditional communities in Melanesia, East Africa and South America. In communities of European origin, the prevalences of diabetes and IGT were in the range of 3-10% and 3-15% respectively, but migrant Indian, Chinese and Hispanic American groups were at higher risk (15-20%). The highest risk was found in the Pima Indians of Arizona and

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated again the global threat posed by emerging zoonotic coronaviruses. During the past two decades alone, humans have experienced the emergence of several coronaviruses, such as SARS-CoV in 2003, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019. To date, MERS-CoV has been detected in 27 countries, with a case fatality ratio of approximately 34.5%. Similar to other coronaviruses, MERS-CoV presumably originated from bats; however, the main reservoir and primary source of human infections are dromedary camels. Other species within the Camelidae family, such as Bac

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is an increasingly recognized condition in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, yet real-world data on advanced therapies from this population remain scarce. Ustekinumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody targeting the shared p40 subunit of interleukin-12 and interleukin-23, has demonstrated efficacy and safety in pivotal randomized controlled trials for both CD and UC. However, its real-world performance in MENA populations has not been well characterized. This study aimed

INTRODUCTION: Monkeypox (mpox) is an illness caused by the MPX virus and endemic to certain African countries. Historically, sporadic outbreaks have occurred in some non-endemic areas. In 2022, a new variant emerged, clade IIb, causing a global outbreak sustained within sexual networks among men who have sex with men (MSM). To our knowledge, this is the first multi-country study examining mpox epidemiology and clinical features of the 2022-2023 outbreak caused by clade IIb across the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR).
METHODS: We analyzed datasets of anonymous mpox case-based reports submitt

Osteoporosis is characterized as a metabolic bone disease defined by low bone mineral density (BMD) and bone tissue degeneration, particularly a reduction in the number of trabeculae and a drop in cortical bone thickness, and a rise in porosity, which is mainly due to an imbalance between bone resorption and formation. As a result, it increases bone fragility, and the susceptibility to fracture increases, especially among the elderly. The objective is to assess the effectiveness of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan in monitoring the response to osteoporosis treatment and compare the

Hemoglobinopathies are major health problems among Iraqi Kurds, who are a distinct ethnic group inhabiting North and Northeastern Iraq. We reviewed published literature on these disorders in this part of the world, and it was revealed that the most prevalent is β-thalassemia with carrier rates of 3.7-6.9%. Alpha thalassemia is less prevalent with carrier rates of 0.03-1.22%, while the sickle cell gene is variably distributed with carrier rates of 0.06-1.2%. Other structural hemoglobinopathies and δβ-thalassemia are sporadic. Twenty-seven different β-thalassemia mutations were identified, with

BACKGROUND: Primaquine is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for radical treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria. This drug is known to provoke acute hemolytic anemia in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Due to lack of data on G6PD deficiency, the use of primaquine has been limited in Africa. In the present study, G6PD deficiency was investigated in blood donors of various ethnic groups living in Nouakchott, a P. vivax endemic area in Mauritania.

With rapid urbanisation and improved living conditions as a result of rising incomes in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, obesity has become a major and growing health problem for the region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a resident population of 9.3 million (in 2016), many of whom (85.5%) lived in urban areas and led sedentary lifestyles. Based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates for 2010, 25% of Emirati men and 40% of the women were obese. Obesity rates in this country has doubled from 16 to 34% compared to the year 2000, and severe obesity (BMI > 40 kg/m2) has rise
