[Equine anaplasmosis and equine piroplasmosis in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - previously anecdotal, now relevant?].

Equine granulocytic anaplasmosis (EGA) and equine piroplasmosis (EP) are triggered by tick-borne pathogens - the intracellular bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum and the intracellular protozoa Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. These pathogens attack cells in the blood stream and cause similar clinical symptoms and changes in laboratory values. Although the treatment principles are naturally different, similarities in prophylaxis exists due to the transmission route. Tick transmitted pathogens can play a greater role in equine medicine in the future due to various factors, such as the tenden

Current trends in canine dirofilariosis in Austria-do we face a pre-endemic status?

A retrospective study based on cases of canine dirofilariosis presented to the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna or diagnosed by private practitioners throughout Austria, from 1998 to 2018 was conducted to investigate the long-term development and current state of canine dirofilarial infections in Austria. Included in this study were 146 dogs which were tested positive for D. immitis and/or D. repens. The most commonly used diagnostic methods and the probable geographical origins of the infections were evaluated and the treatment protocols applied were compared with each other and with

Antifungal susceptibility of yeast bloodstream isolates collected during a 10-year period in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Candida-associated infections put a significant burden on western healthcare systems. Development of (multi-)resistant fungi can become untreatable and threaten especially vulnerable target groups, such as the immunocompromised. OBJECTIVES: We assessed antifungal susceptibility and explored possible influence factors of clinical Candida isolates collected from Austrian hospitals between 2007 and 2016. METHODS: Thousand three hundred and sixty clinical Candida spp. isolated from blood cultures were subjected to antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) in a liquid-handling aided co

Burial duration, depth and air pocket explain avalanche survival patterns in Austria and Switzerland.

AIM: To calculate the first Austrian avalanche survival curve and update a Swiss survival curve to explore survival patterns in the Alps. METHODS: Avalanche accidents occurring between 2005/06 and 2012/13 in Austria and Switzerland were collected. Completely buried victims (i.e. burial of the head and chest) in open terrain with known outcome (survived or not survived) were included in the analysis. Extrication and survival curves were calculated using the Turnbull algorithm, as in previous studies. RESULTS: 633 of the 796 completely buried victims were included (Austria n=333, Switzerland n

Antibiotic resistance marker genes as environmental pollutants in GMO-pristine agricultural soils in Austria.

Antibiotic resistance genes may be considered as environmental pollutants if anthropogenic emission and manipulations increase their prevalence above usually occurring background levels. The prevalence of aph(3')-IIa/nptII and aph(3')-IIIa/nptIII - frequent marker genes in plant biotechnology conferring resistance to certain aminoglycosides - was determined in Austrian soils from 100 maize and potato fields not yet exposed to but eligible for GMO crop cultivation. Total soil DNA extracts were analysed by nptII/nptIII-specific TaqMan real time PCR. Of all fields 6% were positive for nptII (medi

Genetic and Phenotypic Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from Cystic Fibrosis Patients in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-limiting inherited disease in Caucasian populations. While pathological changes can be seen in various organs, morbidity and mortality are mainly related to the respiratory tract, with patients suffering from chronic bronchopulmonary infections with characteristic pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus. OBJECTIVES: To date, there is only very limited data on the genetic and phenotypic characteristics of S. aureus in CF patients. Therefore, in our study, we characterized 58 S. aureus isolates collected from CF patients in Austria by s

Outbreak of staphylococcal food intoxication after consumption of pasteurized milk products, June 2007, Austria.

On June 13, 2007, the public health authority informed the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety about 40 children from two neighboring elementary schools who had fallen ill with abdominal cramps and vomiting on June 8. School milk products consumed on June 8 were suspected as the source of the outbreak. On June 8, the milk products provided by local dairy X to eight elementary schools and two nurseries. The short incubation period - all cases fell ill on the day on which the products were consumed - and the short duration of illness (1-2 days) strongly suggested intoxication. In order to

Anderson-Fabry disease: a case-finding study among male kidney transplant recipients in Austria.

The diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry disease is often delayed or even missed. As severe renal manifestations are a hallmark of alfa-galactosidase A (AGAL) deficiency, we tested the hypothesis that Anderson-Fabry disease is under-recognized among male kidney transplant recipients. This nation-wide study in Austria enrolled 1306 patients (ca 65% of all kidney transplanted males) from 30 kidney centers. AGAL activity was determined from filter paper dried blood spots by a fluorescence assay. A positive screening test was defined by an AGAL activity below 1.5 nmol/h/ml. In patients with a positive bloo

[Streptococcus suis meningitis and neurophysiology of the acoustic system. First case report from Austria].

Meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis was diagnosed in a 63 year old female in Austria. Sixteen months after onset she still suffers from ataxia, disturbance of gait and bilateral hearing impairment. Being a farmer, the patient belongs to a recognized high-risk-group, as most other infected people do. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no report of a human infection by Streptococcus suis in Austria so far. The results of neurophysiological tests excluded a direct lesion to the cochlea during the acute phase of meningitis, and thus, are in contrast to the guinea-pig-model by Kay, wh

Characteristics of women currently using hormone replacement therapy in rural areas of Styria, Austria.

There are no clear-cut guidelines on "hormone replacement therapy". Each women should be individually counselled regarding her risks and then given "therapy". We studied a rural population in Styria that uses non-contraceptive hormones. Our analyses were based on data drawn from a cross-sectional health survey between 1995 and 1996. Our study sample comprised 499 women 40 to 65 years old; 97 of the women were using hormones (19.4%). According to the univariate analysis, women currently using hormones had a higher level of psychosomatic complaints, a higher frequency of health check-ups and vis

Hereditary Transthyretin Amyloidosis in Austria: Clinical, Genetic, and Demographic Insights from a Nationwide Cohort.

Background/Objectives: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) is a heterogeneous multisystem disease caused by pathogenic transthyretin gene (TTR) variants. Increased awareness and availability of disease-modifying therapies have resulted in increased diagnoses, even in previously nonendemic regions. The aim of this study was to update the nationwide Austrian ATTRv registry by characterizing the clinical, genetic, and regional distribution of TTR variants. Methods: This multicenter, observational analysis examined ATTRv cases diagnosed in Austria between 2014 and 2025. Individuals were i

Association of Phylogenomic Relatedness among Neisseria gonorrhoeae Strains with Antimicrobial Resistance, Austria, 2016-2020.

We investigated genomic determinants of antimicrobial resistance in 1,318 Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains isolated in Austria during 2016-2020. Sequence type (ST) 9363 and ST11422 isolates had high rates of azithromycin resistance, and ST7363 isolates correlated with cephalosporin resistance. These results underline the benefit of genomic surveillance for antimicrobial resistance monitoring.
