GSmoothFace: Generalized Smooth Talking Face Generation via Fine Grained 3D Face Guidance.

Although existing speech-driven talking face generation methods achieve significant progress, they are far from real-world application due to the avatar-specific training demand and unstable lip movements. To address the above issues, we propose the GSmoothFace, a novel two-stage generalized talking face generation model guided by a fine-grained 3D face model, which can synthesize smooth lip dynamics while preserving the speaker's identity. Our proposed GSmoothFace model mainly consists of the Audio to Expression Prediction (A2EP) module and the Target Adaptive Face Translation (TAFT) module.

Context-dependent modulation of spatial attention: prioritizing behaviourally relevant stimuli.

Human attention can be guided by semantic information conveyed by individual objects in the environment. Over time, we learn to allocate attention resources towards stimuli that are behaviourally relevant to ongoing action, leading to attention capture by meaningful peripheral stimuli. A common example includes, while driving, stimuli that imply a possibly hazardous scenario (e.g. a pedestrian about to cross the road) warrant attentional prioritization to ensure safe proceedings. In the current study, we report a novel phenomenon in which the guidance of attention is dependent on the stimuli a

Early aortic valve intervention in asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis: a clinical dilemma in evolution.

The management of asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis (AS) has traditionally relied on watchful waiting until the onset of symptoms or left ventricular dysfunction. However, the FDA's approval of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the Sapien 3 platform in May 2025, based on the EARLY TAVR trial, has intensified the debate over early intervention. This Viewpoint synthesizes evidence from randomized trials (RECOVERY, AVATAR, EVOLVED, EARLY TAVR) and registries (HAVEC, VALVENOR) to evaluate the role of early aortic valve replacement (AVR). Early intervention is associated with red

Revival of recombinant IL-2 therapy - approaches from the past until today.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) was one of the first cytokines discovered and its central role in T cell function soon led to the notion that the cytokine could specifically activate immune cells to combat cancer cells. Recombinant human IL-2 (recIL-2) belonged to the first anti-cancer immunotherapeutics that received marketing authorization and while it mediated anti-tumor effects in some cancer entities, treatment was associated with severe and systemic side effects. RecIL-2 holds an exceptional therapeutic potential, which can either lead to stimulation of the immune system - favorable during cancer t

Aesthetic implications of depressor supercilii muscle block with botulinum toxin type A.

INTRODUCTION: When applying botulinum toxin in the upper third of the face, it is important to consider the balance between the elevator and depressor muscles of the eyebrows. Depressor supercilii muscle block leads to elevation of the medial portion of the eyebrow and correction of the oblique lines in the frown. OBJECTIVES: The intention is to highlight the importance of the depressor supercilii muscle block as a useful tool to reposition the medial portion of the eyebrow. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three cases are presented, in whom botulinum toxin is applied conventionally and subsequently on

Top-Down Attention Guidance Shapes Action Encoding in the pSTS.

The posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) is a brain region characterized by perceptual representations of human body actions that promote the understanding of observed behavior. Increasingly, action observation is recognized as being strongly shaped by the expectations of the observer (Kilner 2011; Koster-Hale and Saxe 2013; Patel et al. 2019). Therefore, to characterize top-down influences on action observation, we evaluated the statistical structure of multivariate activation patterns from the action observation network (AON) while observers attended to the different dimensions of actio

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the right temporoparietal junction impairs third-person perspective taking.

Given the current debates about the precise functional role of the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) in egocentric and exocentric perspective taking, in the present study we manipulated activity in the rTPJ to investigate the effects on a spatial perspective-taking task. Participants engaged in a mental body transformation task, requiring them to mentally rotate their own body to the position of an avatar, while undergoing anodal, cathodal, or sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the rTPJ. As a control task, participants judged the laterality of a stimulus feature with re

An investigation into the simulation sickness with head-mounted displays in people with aphasia.

BACKGROUND: In recent times, with the proliferation of technological innovations, head-mounted displays are increasingly used in healthcare, including clinical rehabilitation. Until recently, their use in people with aphasia (an inability to use language for communication following brain damage) was limited. Emerging developments in Mixed Reality, combining augmented and virtual realities, have enabled the use of non-occlusive head-mounted displays in aphasia rehabilitation. However, concerns about the possible adverse effects, such as simulation sickness, arise in people with brain damage and

Synergistic carcinogenesis of the nasopharyngeal microbiome and Epstein-Barr virus: mechanisms of metabolic reprogramming and immune evasion.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, but EBV alone is insufficient for tumorigenesis. Recent evidence suggests that the nasopharyngeal microbiome plays a critical, yet underexplored, role in NPC development. This review investigates the synergistic interaction between EBV and the nasopharyngeal microbiome, focusing on microbial dysbiosis and its role in NPC pathogenesis. We highlight significant microbial dysbiosis in NPC patients, characterized by an overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromona

How Users Perceive and Respond to Digital Humans: A Scoping Review of Agency, Embodiment, Social Role, and Response Outcomes.

Digital humans are emerging as a form of mediated communication, appearing as virtual influencers, virtual agents, avatars, VTubers, AI companions, and other humanlike digital entities across social media, entertainment, commerce, and online communities. Research on how users perceive and respond to these entities remains fragmented across disciplines. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on users' perceptions of and responses to digital humans. Following established scoping review guidance and PRISMA-ScR reporting principles, we searched Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO for English-langu

Developmental differences in perceiving arousal and valence from dynamically unfolding emotional expressions.

The development of emotion perception has predominantly been studied using static, unimodal stimuli featuring the faces of young adults. Most findings indicate a processing advantage for positive emotions in children (positivity bias) and a negativity bias in adults, although these results are usually task-dependent. We created a new stimulus database comprising digital avatars from four age groups, dynamically expressing happiness, happy-surprise, anger, and sadness in visual (face only) and visual-verbal (face and voice) conditions. To determine whether previously found biases would re-emerg

The Impact of Environment Design Bias on Working Memory.

Extended Reality (XR) is a powerful tool for training, education, and gaming. Research suggests that gender differences exist in XR environments including women having a lower sense of subjective presence and being more susceptible to motion sickness. However, the underrepresentation of women both as participants and researchers could lead to potential design biases, impacting the accuracy and inclusivity of XR systems. This work investigates subtle design differences in virtual environments on women's performance on a cognitive test. Non-male participants (n = 40) completed the Stroop Interfe

Virtual Reality Simulation for Suicide Risk Assessment Training: Prevalence of Adverse Effects.

OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality (VR) simulation is changing the landscape of simulation-based medical education. Immersive VR allows users to interact with a computer-generated environment and digital avatars using a VR headset and controllers. However, current literature regarding the use of immersive VR simulation in psychiatric medical education is sparse. This study describes its use and considerations regarding tolerability. METHODS: At a mental health hospital in Canada, two immersive VR suicide risk assessment (SRA) case simulations were developed. These simulations have participants interv

Novel approaches to tackling emotional loss of control of eating across the weight spectrum.

Emotional overeating is a process that is particularly relevant to people within the binge spectrum of eating disorders. Approximately a third of people with overweight share this phenotype. In addition, this behaviour may occur in neurodevelopmental disorders (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) and other psychiatric disorders. The biopsychosocial underpinnings of emotional eating include a genetic vulnerability to a higher weight and various cognitive and emotional traits. The environment also plays a key role. For example, the commodification of food and beauty and exposure to

Oncogenic KIT Induces Replication Stress and Confers Cell Cycle Checkpoint Vulnerability in Melanoma.

Acral and mucosal melanomas arise from sun-protected sites, disproportionately impact darker-skinned individuals, and exact higher mortality than common types of cutaneous melanoma. Genetically, acral and mucosal melanomas harbor more alterations of KIT than typical cutaneous melanomas. Because KIT-mutated melanomas remain largely treatment resistant, we set out to create a faithful murine KIT-driven allograft model to define newer therapeutic strategies. Using the prevalent human KITK642E activating mutation, the murine mKITK641E cellular avatars show features of transformation in vitro and t

Social Anxiety Can Be Triggered by 360-Degree Videos in Virtual Reality: A Pilot Study Exploring Fear of Shopping.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) involves intense fear of being scrutinized, judged, or embarrassed in public. Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is an exposure tool for SAD. Previous studies have developed computer-generated avatars and virtual environments, but this method is time-consuming and expensive. Preliminary evidence shows that 360-degree virtual reality (VR) videos with real-life situations may be an easy, relatively cheap, and effective alternative. This study aimed to develop VR videos with real-life content from a shopping situation and to evaluate participants' anxiety respon
