BACKGROUND: Despite the prevalence of intra-abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, and skin/skin structure infections, the relative impact of these syndromes on patient health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is unclear. This qualitative secondary analysis used data from an interview-based HRQoL qualitative study of bloodstream infections by source of infection to inform the potential development, adaptation, and use of HRQoL measures.
METHODS: Interview transcripts from eligible participants (aged ≥18 years) with intra-abdominal, urinary tract, and skin/skin structure infections as t

Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of the protozoan parasite Leishmania spp. Although the intestinal microbiota is involved in a wide range of biological and physiological processes and has the potential to alter vector competence, little is known about the impact of host species and environment on the gut microbiome. To address this issue, a comparative analysis of the microbiota of sand fly vector populations of Leishmania major and L. tropica in a mixed focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Tunisia was performed. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplification and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were used t

Background Antimicrobial resistance by bacteria poses a substantial threat to the success in the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). Levonadifloxacin is a novel benzoquinolizine subclass of quinolone which has a broad spectrum of activity, available in both oral and intravenous formulations for the treatment of skin structure infections caused by Gram-positive pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Patients and methods This prescription event monitoring study captured data of 227 patients receiving levonadifloxacin (oral an

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of antimicrobial resistance poses a significant challenge in clinical practice, with long-acting lipoglycopeptides (LGPs) offering an attractive alternative to conventional daily intravenous antibiotics. This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, and economic burden of LGPs in the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-centre, observational study including 125 patients with skin and soft tissue infections who were either treated with LGPs such as dalbavancin or oritavancin (Group A, n = 62), or

Antibiotics are often found in the environment as pollutants. They are usually found as mixtures in the environment and may produce toxicity against different ecological species due to joint exposure in the sub-optimal range. Sometimes the degradation products of parent chemicals also interact with it and cause mixture toxicity. In this study, we have developed three different mixture-Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (mixture-QSAR) models for three different bacterial species (Vibrio fischeri, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis). The toxicity data were collected from a previou

BACKGROUND: Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) are a frequent cause of emergency department (ED) visits. Providers in the ED have many decisions to make during the initial treatment of ABSSSI. There are limited data on the patient factors that influence these provider decisions.
METHODS: An anonymous survey was administered to providers at 6 EDs across the United States. The survey presented patient cases with ABSSSIs ≥75 cm2 and escalating clinical scenarios including relapse, controlled diabetes, and sepsis. For each case, participants were queried on their decisio

This open-label noncontrolled, phase II multicenter trial was designed to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of 200 mg of AFN-1252, a selective inhibitor of Staphylococcus aureus enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (FabI), given by mouth twice daily in the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) due to staphylococci. Important aspects of the current study included a comparison of early response efficacy endpoints with end-of-treatment and follow-up endpoints. Many patients in the intent-to-treat population (n = 103) had significant comorbidities.

Herbicides are applied in agricultural practices to manage weeds. How these herbicides applied before maize emergence (Zea mays L.) might affect the rhizosphere and endophytic bacterial community is still largely unknown. In this study, plots were treated with 400 g paraquat ha-1 (Gramoxone®, paraquat ion 20% w/w), 1,089 g glyphosate ha-1 (Faena®, potassium salt of glyphosate 446 g/L) or weeds were hand removed before maize emerged and the bacterial community was determined in the bulk soil at the start of the experiment, in the bulk soil, rhizosphere, roots and stem at flowering (after 101 da

Inspired by the transpiration in the tree stem having a vertical and porous channel structure, high efficiency of formaldehyde removal is realized by the multi-scale micro-nano channel structure in a hybrid P(AAm/DA)-Ag/MgO hydrogel coating cross-linked on microfiber-based polyurethane. The present multi-scale channel structure is formed by a joint effect of directional freezing and redox polymerization as well as nanoparticles-induced porosity. Due to the large number of vertically aligned channels of micrometer size and an embedded porous structure of nanometer size, the specific surface are

We describe a murine cDNA, designated Early T lymphocyte activation 1 (ETA-1) which is abundantly expressed after activation of T cells. Eta-1 encodes a highly acidic secreted product having structural features of proteins that bind to cellular adhesion receptors. The Eta-1 gene maps to a locus on murine chromosome 5 termed Ric that confers resistance to infection by Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (RT), an obligate intracellular bacterium that is the etiological agent for human scrub typhus. With one exception, inbred mouse strains that expressed the Eta-1a allele were resistant to RT infection (Ric

Severe bacterial infections (SBIs) are a leading cause of neonatal deaths in low- and middle-income countries. World Health Organization's (WHO's) guideline for outpatient management of danger signs indicating possible serious bacterial infections (PSBI) when referral is not possible was adopted by three pilot district councils in Mbeya Region, in Tanzania (Busekelo, Kyela and Mbarali Districts) in 2018 (the PSBI project). This study documented changes in practice during the PSBI project, and lessons learned. A cross-sectional study was conducted using both qualitative and quantitative data co

INTRODUCTION: Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) remain among the most common infectious processes seen in the clinical setting. For patients with complicated ABSSSIs deemed to require intravenous antibiotics, vancomycin remains the mainstay therapy. Ceftaroline has been shown to be non-inferior to vancomycin and may result in faster resolution of signs of infection.
METHODS: Multicenter, prospective, open-label, randomized trial of ceftaroline versus vancomycin for the treatment of adult patients admitted for management of ABSSSIs from April 2012 to May 2016; 166 pa

BACKGROUND: Heterologous prime-boost immunization protocols using different gene expression systems have proven to be successful tools in protecting against various diseases in experimental animal models. The main reason for using this approach is to exploit the ability of expression cassettes to prime or boost the immune system in different ways during vaccination procedures. The purpose of the project was to study the ability of recombinant vaccinia virus (VV) and bacterial plasmid, both carrying the NS1 gene from tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus under the control of different promoters,
